Svartafjall, or Black Mountain, rises to the west of the pass, and Magnusartindur, or Magnus' Peak, rises to the east. The pass used to close in the winter due to snow conditions routinely. Consequently, local planners constructed a tunnel beneath it to facilitate transport. The tunnel project began in 1974 and was completed in 1977. The tunnel is 626 metres long and 632 metres above sea level. The locals enjoy the healthy winter sport of skiing near the resort pass. Skiers are transported by tow lift to an elevation of 840 metres above sea level, where they are treated to a beautiful view of Reyarfjörur. The ski resort offers two tow lifts, a kid's life, snowboard-friendly equipment, and a ski lodge with food services.

It offers a 1.600 m ski lift, a lift for kids, and plenty of diversity for skiers. Long into the summer, snowmobiling and cross-country skiing are still feasible from the ski area and the Fjardarheidi heath. The spectacular East fjord mountains, uninhabited fjords, and the famous Dyrfjoll mountains may all be reached by snowmobile from the Stafdalur Ski Area. The Stafdalur ski area in Seyisfjörur is close to route 93, which connects Egilsstair and Seyisfjörur. Three ski lifts and hills for all levels of skiers are nearby.
