The City Garden is home to the German Christmas Market. The 40 houses in the market are filled with the cheerful feeling that the market gives to the citizens and visitors of the capital. The market's goal is to introduce our nation to the spirit of the German Christmas. Along with traditional German souvenirs, you may purchase delicious and savoury treats there. The entire City Garden is filled with stuffed potatoes, sausage, and stollen aromas. On December 21st, you can savour the mood created by the lights, music, and happy people. "Kapana Market" will debut in Sofia as an additional market. According to the market's organisers, most of Plovdiv's "Kapana Market" will stay in the city for an entire month. They will delight Sofians with delectable fare and handcrafted works of art by Bulgarian authors in partnership with BEAT. On November 26th, Marno Pole Park in Veliko Tarnovo, the historic city, was transformed into a charming Christmas town as the Christmas market got underway. On November 19th, at the Sea Station in Varna, the Christmas spirit descended onto the Black Sea shore. The "Varna fun port" provides 24 Christmas cottages where you can buy food and drinks, an ice rink and open-to-the-public amusement park activities. However, the city still provides us with two more markets: one in "Hall 3" and one on Independence Square. Visitors can take in local traditional performances and music at all three markets. You can indulge in extreme activities in "Hall 3," and if you grow bored, you can visit two other halls with concerts and creative relaxation. "Varna fun port" will run through January 6th; the Independence Square event will be open to the public from December 5th through January 10th, 2022.

Last but not least, we'll conclude our tour of the nation's Christmas markets with the "Christmas Village of Bulgaria," which will enchant tourists from December 11th to January 1st of the following year in the charming village of Chavdar. The German and Austrian Christmas markets served as inspiration for the market. Expect decorations, German specialities, mulled wine, and a robust cultural schedule. Every Friday, beginning on December 11th, visitors and residents of the village of Chavdar will be able to see this Christmas fantasy, which is full of exciting events and intense feelings. The forty-day Christmas fast, during which one is not permitted to eat meat or animal products, including dairy and eggs, traditionally ends on Christmas night or Budni vecher. All alcohol except wine would be prohibited during a highly severe fast. My family doesn't observe the forty-day fast leading up to Christmas, but we still prepare an utterly vegan meal on Christmas Eve. Another need is that there must be an odd number of dishes on the table, ideally nine or eleven. Even this statistic suggests the significance of this specific meal: preparing nine vegan meals is no small feat.

The homemade bread, the focus of the Christmas Eve feast, is surprisingly excellent, considering that it is produced without eggs or even yeast (considered an animal product). It has a piece for every member of the family, one more for the house, and a centrepiece for the one who is the hungriest. One of the pieces has a silver coin baked into it as good luck. The bread is spun in the middle of the table at the start of the dinner. In this instance, my mother generally adds symbolic figures on the bread, such as a fish, a sheep pen, a dog, a pig, a sun, a nest of eggs, and a cluster of grapes.

Despite how bizarre this cuisine may appear and sound, it is necessary. The name speaks for itself. Every time someone claims they could eat nothing but that for the rest of the night, we dip the bread in, and it tastes so amazing. This dish is considered a "superfood" and is served as part of the midwinter Christmas night feast because the three ingredients are reputed to help strengthen the immune system.

The holiday season in Bulgaria begins in early December, sometimes even in November, as people start getting ready for Christmas and New Year's Eve. The weeks leading up to December 25th are a great time to feel festive. Every community prepares for the holidays by putting up numerous decorations, hosting events, and hosting Christmas markets. Because the Orthodox Church uses the Gregorian calendar, we celebrate Christmas on December 25th in Bulgaria. As a result, it differs from the traditional Eastern Orthodox, such as Serbia or Russia, who observe it on January 7th according to the Julian calendar. Christmas Eve (Badni voucher), the night before Christmas, is also immensely significant. The entire family—children, parents, and grandparents—prepares a special meal and spends time with one another.

Preparation for Christmas in Bulgaria

Let's make this December one to cherish. We adore holidays, and December is the season we celebrate the most. There are, of course, some customs and beliefs in Bulgaria associated with Christmas. However, some evolve or remain in the smaller villages. We also acknowledge brand-new western traditions and observe a modern version of Christmas. Beginning on November 15th, most devout Bulgarians begin their Advent fast to prepare for Christmas. After that, we only consume fish when permitted and avoid all foods and meat. Finding vegan food in a restaurant can be challenging, especially for meat eaters and when dining with companions. Take this task, though, if you're up for it! I have done it for Christmas and Easter for the past five years. So the following time, let's work together! Up until December 25th, we also observe two significant religious holidays.

Nikulden and ignazhden

You may be aware that Saint Nicholas was the forerunner of the current Santa Claus, and children throughout Western and Central Europe still anticipate his gift-bringing visits. However, the patron saint of fishermen and sailors in Bulgaria is Saint Nicholas, often known as Sveti Nikola. However, they don't just commemorate it on December 6th; we all celebrate this occasion in hopes of happiness, good fortune, and health. Fish or any other seafood must be served at the table. The most well-liked fish on this auspicious day is the carp, regarded as a sacrifice fish. It must be flaky and caught just moments ago. The homemaker should keep the scales from falling to the floor when cleaning because this portends problems. The family's luck will be recovered if the fish prepared for the celebration is torn and incomplete. Ribnik, a carp fillet wrapped in dough and filled with rice, onion, raisins, and almonds, is the traditional food served on St. Nicholas' Day (Nikulden).
