If you're looking for natural drama, the Iceland holidays are the way to go. Volcanoes and glaciers dot the surface of this massive island, and North Atlantic waves pound its shores. Visitors are discovering its distinct culture and awe-inspiring landscapes, featured in many films and television shows, including Game of Thrones.
Most Iceland holidays begin in Reykjavik, the world's northernmost capital, with fascinating museums and lively bars and cafés. Reykjavik is a good starting point for the Golden Circle, a well-known route that includes cascading waterfalls, bubbling geysers, and the world's oldest parliament. South-east of here are some of Iceland's most photogenic attractions, including black sand beaches and Jökulsárlón, a lagoon of massive floating icebergs.
There's a lot more to see elsewhere. The beautiful, winding Westfjords are a popular destination for adventurous visitors. At the same time, the north is home to Akureyri, Iceland's relaxed second city, and some of the country's best scenery – vast fjords, snowy peaks, and surreal lava fields. Further afield are the peaceful Eastfjords and the remote Highlands – a vast wilderness in Iceland's interior that is only accessible during the summer. You'll find delicious local produce wherever you go (including lamb and seafood). Hiking, horseback riding, kayaking, exploring glacial caves, looking for the Northern Lights, and watching whales are all options. However, the breathtaking scenery makes it easy to enjoy simply staring out your car window. If you look closely enough at these supercharged landscapes, you might begin to believe in local legends of trolls, ghosts, and elves.

Itinerary
Day 2
Check Out the Northern Lights and Local Scenery
Great idea to rent a car in the capital and explore on your own. Can reach the south of the island in a day or two, but you don't have to go that far, and you can enjoy the scenery as you go. Of course, this will necessitate a hotel stopover, but that's no problem!
If you prefer, you can drive as far as you want before turning around and returning to the capital – the choice is yours, but you'll still see some significant sights.
As you travel south from the capital, you will pass by some of the most spectacular waterfalls you will ever see, such as Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss, as well as the picturesque but strange black sand beaches.
As you travel through Vatnajokull National Park, you will be able to see the Eyjafjallajokull volcano as well as a plethora of smaller volcanoes and glaciers. These are all examples of Mother Nature at her finest, displaying both her beauty and fury at the same time.
As evening approaches, there is one thing you will undoubtedly want to cross off your bucket list, and you are in the ideal location to do so – the Northern Lights!
Because of Iceland's general location, you can usually see this incredible natural phenomenon from anywhere. Still, away from major towns and cities, you will have a better chance of seeing it. If you're driving back to the capital, stop somewhere quiet to look at the night sky, as this is where you'll have the best chance of seeing something truly spectacular.
Day 3
The Reykjanes Peninsula & Whale Watching
You should continue on your road trip adventure towards the Reykjanes Peninsula, which puts you back close to the capital and the airport for your return flight – but your vacation isn't over yet! If you returned to the money the night before, you could simply explore this neighbourhood as well.
The Reykjanes Peninsula is home to many small and quaint towns that showcase the laid-back, authentic way of life and numerous museums and natural wonders. What is the one thing you must do as you approach the coast? Observing whales! This journey only takes a few hours at most, and while no one can ever be certain of seeing anything, the chances are incredibly high in these waters.
There are frequent sightings of harbour porpoises, Minke whales, humpback whales, and white-beaked dolphins in this world area. While not typical, it is not impossible to spot an orca or a basking shark! You're also very likely to see one of Iceland's most famous residents – the puffin – on your tour. Remember to bring your camera for this one!
