Itinerary

Day 1

Arrival in Tanzania

Welcome to Tanzania! Your experience begins when you arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport, where you will be greeted and transported to your accommodation. Here, you’ll meet your trekking team and receive a briefing about the journey ahead. The day ends with a relaxing evening at Kilimanjaro Wonders Hotel, where you can enjoy dinner and prepare for the trek.

Moshi to Machame Camp

Following a leisurely breakfast, you will be driven to register and start your ascent at the Machame Gate. The journey starts through the lush rainforest, with the possibility of encountering rain, making the trail muddy and slippery. Midway, you'll enjoy a lunch stop before continuing to Machame Camp, where you’ll spend the night. All meals are provided.

Machame Camp to Shira II Camp

Today’s trek takes you out of the rainforest and into the mountains. You’ll cross streams and ascend over rocky ridges onto the Shira Plateau, leading to Shira II Camp. The camp offers stunning views of the Western Breach and its glaciers. After a long day of trekking, you'll be greeted with prepared tents and a warm lunch when the temperature drops below freezing.

Shira II Camp to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower

This day involves a challenging trek as you move from the moorland into a semi-desert landscape, eventually reaching the Lava Tower at 4,600m. Here, you can enjoy a packed lunch and, if the weather allows, climb the Lava Tower. Afterward, you’ll descend to Barranco Camp, benefiting from altitude acclimatization. The camp is located in a scenic valley, offering breathtaking views of the Breach and Great Barranco Wall.

Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

The day begins with a climb up the Great Barranco Wall, which, despite its intimidating appearance, is a manageable and rewarding part of the trek. Once at the top, you'll be treated to views of the Heim Glacier and a landscape above the clouds. The trail then winds through the Karanga Valley, providing a relatively short day ideal for acclimatisation.

Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Leaving Karanga Camp, you’ll intersect with the Mweka Route, used for descent. The trail leads to Barafu Camp, the last stop before the summit attempt. This exposed, rocky camp is known for its strong winds and cold temperatures. After an early dinner, you’ll rest in preparation for the midnight summit push.

Summit Attempt - Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp

The most challenging day of the trek begins around midnight as you start your ascent towards the summit. The route leads to Stella Point (5,685 m) and then continues to Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa. After celebrating your achievement and capturing the moment with photos, you’ll begin the descent back to Barafu Camp for a short rest and lunch. The day ends with a further descent to Mweka Camp, where you’ll have dinner and a well-deserved rest.

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

After a hearty breakfast, you’ll enjoy a celebratory gathering with your trekking team, complete with singing and dancing. Following the celebration, you’ll descend to Mweka Gate, where you’ll receive a certificate of completion. You'll then be transported back to Arusha and checked into Masailand Safari & Lodge, where you can unwind and reflect on your fantastic adventure.

Departure

On your final day, depending on your flight schedule, you may have the opportunity to explore Arusha, visit local markets for souvenirs, or simply relax before being transferred to the airport for your onwards journey. If you have additional plans, such as a safari or a beach stay in Zanzibar, the team will assist with the transition to your next adventure.

The camp is located in a clearing surrounded by tall trees and dense flora, providing a peaceful location to recover after a strenuous journey. Trekkers often arrive at Machame Camp in the late afternoon, with tents already set up by the support team. The evening at Machame Camp typically involves settling into your tent, enjoying a hot meal prepared by the camp cook, and relaxing in the cool mountain air. The camp’s elevation offers the first real taste of higher altitude, making it an important point for acclimatization. As night falls, the temperature drops significantly, and trekkers can often witness the forest canopy shrouded in mist, adding to the ethereal beauty of the camp. This peaceful setting serves as the perfect end to the first day’s hike, allowing trekkers to recharge for the journey ahead.

Perched at an elevation of 3,850 meters, Shira II Camp is one of the most picturesque campsites on the Machame Route. Situated on the Shira Plateau, this camp offers expansive views of the surrounding landscape, including the Western Breach and Kibo Peak. The trek to Shira II Camp takes you out of the dense rainforest and into the moorland, where the terrain becomes rockier and the vegetation more sparse. By the time you reach Shira II, you’ll notice the air is cooler, and the atmosphere feels more remote and serene. Trekkers can enjoy stunning sunsets and starry skies on clear nights because the camp is situated in a large, open space. The spaciousness of the camp, combined with the rugged beauty of the plateau, creates a sense of isolation and adventure. After a long day of trekking, Shira II Camp provides a welcoming place to rest, with tents already pitched and a hot meal ready for you. The high altitude here plays a crucial role in the acclimatisation process, preparing your body for the challenges ahead as you continue your ascent towards the summit of Kilimanjaro.

Barranco Camp, nestled at an altitude of 3,900 meters, is one of the most striking and memorable campsites on the Machame Route. The camp, located in a sheltered valley beneath the massive Great Barranco Wall, provides dramatic views of Kilimanjaro's southern ice fields as well as the mountain's high peaks. The trek to Barranco Camp involves descending from the high point of Lava Tower at 4,600 meters, providing vital acclimatisation as you drop to this lower elevation. The camp has a distinct and rough feel because of the surrounding massive stones and sheer cliffs. Despite its lower altitude compared to Lava Tower, the camp is a crucial rest stop, allowing your body to adjust to the thinner air. Evenings at Barranco Camp are often filled with camaraderie as trekkers gather to share their experiences of the day over a hot meal. The star attraction, however, is the Great Barranco Wall, a sheer cliff that looms ahead, promising a challenging but exhilarating climb the following morning. Barranco Camp's location and the vistas it offers make it a highlight of the Machame Route, providing trekkers with both a physical and visual feast as they prepare for the next leg of their journey towards the summit.

Karanga Camp, situated at an altitude of 3,995 meters, serves as a critical acclimatisation point on the Machame Route. The camp, located after ascending the Great Barranco Wall, is set in a picturesque valley flanked by high cliffs and rolling hills. The trek to Karanga Camp is relatively short but involves navigating through a series of ridges and valleys, which provide both a physical challenge and stunning panoramic views of the landscape below. The camp itself offers a peaceful retreat, with clear skies often revealing incredible vistas of the summit above and the expansive plains below. It is here that trekkers can catch their breath and recover from the morning’s climb, while the relatively lower elevation compared to the following camps helps with acclimatization. Karanga Camp is the last water point along the Machame Route, making it a key stop to replenish supplies before the final push towards Barafu Camp and the summit. Evenings at Karanga Camp are calm and reflective, with trekkers enjoying a well-earned rest as the temperatures drop and the stars begin to emerge in the clear, crisp night sky. The camp provides an excellent opportunity to prepare both mentally and physically for the challenging days ahead, ensuring trekkers are well-rested for the summit attempt.

Barafu Camp, perched at a height of 4,673 meters, is the final camp before the summit attempt on Mount Kilimanjaro. The name "Barafu" means "ice" in Swahili, aptly reflecting the cold, harsh environment of this exposed, rocky campsite. The trek to Barafu Camp is demanding, with the route winding through a desolate, alpine desert landscape that offers stark, breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks and the vast plains below. Trekkers arrive at Barafu Camp to find stunning and challenging terrain, with tents placed on a narrow, windswept slope. The atmosphere at the camp is filled with anticipation and excitement, as this is the staging ground for the midnight ascent to Uhuru Peak. It is recommended that trekkers rest and drink plenty of water after arriving at the camp in the afternoon, as the temperature drops significantly and the air is thin. Dinner is provided early so that everyone has time to get to sleep before the midnight summit attempt. The few hours of rest at Barafu are crucial for conserving energy before the gruelling climb to the top. Despite its inhospitable conditions, Barafu Camp holds a unique sense of camaraderie and determination as everyone prepares for the ultimate challenge of reaching the highest point in Africa.

Mweka Camp, situated at an altitude of 3,100 meters, marks the final overnight stop on the descent from Mount Kilimanjaro. After the exhilaration of reaching the summit at Uhuru Peak, trekkers make their way down to this camp, which is nestled in the forested lower slopes of the mountain. The descent from Barafu Camp to Mweka Camp is steep, but the lush surroundings and lower altitude provide a welcome change after the harsh conditions of the summit push. Trekkers may unwind and think back on their amazing experience in the serene setting of Mweka Camp, which is surrounded by tall trees and lush greenery. The air here is warmer and richer in oxygen, allowing for deeper, more restorative sleep after the physically demanding climb. The camp’s facilities include a large dining tent where trekkers gather to enjoy their meals and share stories of their summit experience. The atmosphere at Mweka Camp is often celebratory, as the hardest part of the journey is behind them. Knowing that climbing Kilimanjaro is now over, the night spent here is one of rest and relief. The trek officially ends the next morning when the descent reaches Mweka Gate, when certificates of completion are given out.
