- Although their presence has changed the ecosystem of the Channel Islands, golden eagles have proven to be an effective means of keeping fox populations in check.
- Research shows that the native bald eagles slowly returned to the area after having been eradicated decades earlier.
- The new populations of bald eagles preyed heavily on the non-native golden eagles, which were then forced to switch from hunting deer fawns and feral piglets to small animals like foxes.
- Since they could no longer prey on larger animals, golden eagle numbers also began to dwindle.
- The National Park Service (NPS) decided to intervene by destroying all of the golden eagle's food sources – both native and non-native alike–on four of the islands.
- After eliminating all food sources, they set out traps with non-toxic rodenticide bait designed to kill any predators that might try to feed on the trapped rodents.
- Once the NPS stopped feeding them, all golden eagles began dying from starvation and poisoning, eventually rebounding in native bald eagle populations.
- In addition, some organisations are now maintaining "fox hospitals" for foxes that have sustained injuries or contracted diseases like canine distemper and sarcoptic mange.
