The Best Places to Visit in Los Cabos
The Arch of Cabo San Lucas
- The rugged taffy-coloured El Arco rock formation erupts from the sea at the tip of the Baja Peninsula. The Pacific Ocean meets the Cortez, which is the city's most recognisable landmark.
- El Arco, also known as Land's End, is a popular tourist attraction and the focal point of countless vacation photos.
- Land's end is unquestionably one of the most popular things to do in Cabo San Lucas.
- You can see the iconic golden arch from your boat or ask the captain to drop you off and arrange a pick-up time.
- You'll see lazy sea lions basking on the rocks along the way.
Playa del Amor
- Playa del Amor, Land's End's north-facing beach, is flanked by the granite rocks known as "El Arco."
- Playa del Amor, which faces away from the Pacific and its roaring surf, is a tranquil cove where boats drop off day-trippers to relax on the sands, snorkel in the clear waters, climb on the rocks, and capture the best shots of this incomparable location.
- The appropriately named Playa del Divorcio is just behind you and is battered by the Pacific surf if you need more space out.
- Bathing is not permitted on this site, but there is a lovely stretch of sand, and the sunsets are spectacular.
Playa Santa MarĂa
- Playa Santa Mara is a crescent-shaped cove defended by two promontories that you'll never want to leave.
- These keep the currents at bay, so Playa Santa Mara is usually calm and clear even when other beaches are choppy.
- The Los Cabos Corridor, Playa Santa Mara has seen an increase in construction.
- What was once a dirt track has been replaced by a new bathroom and a parking lot.
- However, even when boatloads of snorkelers arrive early in the afternoon, the beach still has an undiscovered feel as of early 2018.
- Because there are no vendors and only a few palapas (palm sunshades), it's best to come prepared.
Mount Solmar
- Climbing this rough-hewn peak on Land's End is one of the most rewarding free activities in Cabo San Lucas.
- Even though the slopes of Mount Solmar appear complicated, the trek to the top is doable for most ages because the rocks act as natural steps, and the peak isn't much higher than 100 meters above sea level.
- The tricky part is locating the trailhead, which is located on private property at a dog shelter, but this is easily researched online.
- When you reach the summit, the views of Los Arcos and San Lucas Bay are spectacular.
Mission San José del Cabo Church
- The Colonial-style parish church, the last remaining structure of an 18th-century mission, is the most impressive historical landmark in Los Cabos.
- It was the southernmost of a chain of Jesuit missions that stretched the entire length of the Baja California peninsula.
- Five years after establishing the mission, the local Peric culture revolted, and the missionary, Nicolás Tamaral, was sacrificed.
- The surviving church is a refined facade with two towers and a curved pediment.
- The nave is similarly frank, but it's worth a look, and there's a plaque outside explaining the mission's turbulent beginnings.
- The square in front of San José is a sight to behold, with a traditional Mexican bandstand surrounded by colourful houses.
Playa el Chileno
- Playa el Chileno, another spectacular beach on the Corridor, rivals Santa Mara in beauty and has only recently been designated for development.
- It's an east-facing public beach on a bit of spit of land, with a boardwalk leading down from the parking lot.
- The abundance of sea life in the bay's shallow waters is astounding, and on calmer days, the sea is clear enough that you won't even need snorkelling equipment to see the fish darting around your legs.
- The beauty of Playa el Chileno is its seclusion, but this means no bars or restaurants, so bring a picnic and a parasol.
- Whales are in season; you can sit on the rocks to the south and watch them swim by.
