City Hall

  • Belfast's classical Renaissance-style City Hall was completed in 1906 and is made of excellent white Portland stone.
  • The lavish, wedding-cake Italian marble of the dome; an opportunity to sit on the mayor's seat in the council chamber; and the eccentric portraits of prior lord mayors highlight the free 45-minute guided tour.
  • A series of memorial stained-glass windows and a visitor exhibition with displays on Belfast's history divided across 16 rooms are located on the ground floor and are available outside of tour times.

Belfast Off the Beaten Track

destination - Seasons to travel

Crown Liquor Saloon

  • The National Trust's Crown Liquor Saloon is one of the few historical sites where you can sip a pint of Guinness.
  • Patrick Flanagan restored Belfast's most famous pub in the late 19th century, displaying Victorian decorative flamboyance at its peak (he was looking to pull in a posh clientele from the train station and Grand Opera House opposite).
  • Despite being a tourist draw, by 6 p.m., the tavern is packed with residents.
  • The inside (1898) features a plethora of stained and cut glass, marble, ceramics, mirrors, and mahogany, lit by authentic gas mantles to create a warm and inviting atmosphere.
  • A long, ornately adorned bar dominates on one side of the pub, while a row of ornate wooden snugs occupies the other.
  • Gunmetal plates (from the Crimean War) are used to strike matches, while bell-pushes allow drinkers to order refills without leaving their chairs (no longer).
destination - Seasons to travel

Crumlin Road Gaol

  • Guided tours of Belfast's legendary Crumlin Road Gaol take you from the tunnel beneath Crumlin Rd, built-in 1850 to transport inmates from the courthouse across the street (and reportedly the origin of the judge's line "carry him down") to the genuinely horrific execution chamber.
  • Tour reservations should be made in advance. The pedestrian entrance of the jail is on Crumlin Rd, while the car-park entrance is on Cliftonpark Ave to the north.
  • From Éamon de Valera to the Reverend Ian Paisley and feminist Dorothy Evans to the 'Shankill Butcher' killer Lenny Murphy, Crumlin Road Gaol has held a diverse range of historical characters since its inception in 1846.
  • 'The Crum,' patterned on London's Pentonville prison and designed by Charles Lanyon (the architect of Queen's University and many other local monuments), was also the site of 17 executions between 1854 and 1961. Until 1996, it was a functioning prison.
  • Check the jail's calendar for four-hour "paranormal tours" and frequent, incredibly atmospheric performances.

CULTURE & TRADITIONS

CULTURE & TRADITIONS

Belfast Culture and Traditions

destination - Seasons to travel
  • Northern Ireland's cultural life tends to follow the contours of political and sectarian divisions and is defined by various shibboleths.
  • For example, Roman Catholics and Protestants may listen to the same song but call it by different names; however, age, gender, and class play at least as significant a role in explaining many differences in music, drinking, and social life as religion does.
  • Northern Ireland is a traditional society in many aspects. Church attendance is high (though on the decline), family life is essential, and community ties are strong.
  • Most people's everyday interactions are limited to members of their local community, whether in urban areas or rural villages.
  • In Catholic communities, dancing, singing, and cultural and community festivals abound, especially in the months after St. Patrick's Day (March 17th).

Belfast Must-Attend Festivals and Events

destination - Seasons to travel
  • Every year in the final half of January, the Temple Bar TradFest (say that ten times fast) takes place for five days to mark the end of winter and the arrival of spring.
  • This festival, now in its 13th year, continues to grow in popularity.
  • The name of the festival genre is self-explanatory; this is a small-scale celebration of traditional Irish music.
  • At least, that's how it started; presently, the festival has grown to include a diverse range of musical genres to appeal to both the traditionalist and the musical generalist.
  • TradFest's roots are in traditional Irish music, but folk and even rock and roll have a home there.
  • This festival in Ireland, which has been going on for almost two decades, has resulted in something quite remarkable.
  • The Gathering is a well-attended celebration that celebrates Irish culture, including music, jigs, storytelling, and ceilidhs.
  • Even masterclasses taught by musicians to teach the trade of instrument construction.
  • Some workshops and professionals can teach you how to play the violin, accordion, flute, or other instruments.
  • From February 26th to March 1st, 2020, the festival will occur.
  • Because of the festival's scale, events, shows, and workshops will be held in various locations throughout town, ranging from fashionable pubs and luxury hotels to classic ballrooms.
  • However, the Gleneagle Hotel will serve as its headquarters.
