Yachting in Marmaris Bay

  • Marmaris' tourism reputation was built on its prime coastal location, which overlooks a beautiful harbor.
  • Taking to the water is, unsurprisingly, the most popular way to take in the lush coastline scenery of Marmaris Bay.
  • There are numerous boat tours from which to choose.
  • One-day group tours aboard large boats cruise around the islands of Marmaris Bay, anchoring along the coast for swimming stops, for those with only a short time in town.
  • However, for many visitors, Marmaris is simply a starting point for a multi-day sailing trip on a gület (Turkish wooden yacht).
  • Sailing trips depart from Marmaris harbor throughout the summer, heading east along the densely forested coast to Fethiye or Göcek, or sailing around Greece's Dodecanese islands.
destination - Seasons to travel

Marmaris Castle

  • Marmaris may be a full-fledged tourist destination, but it also has a rich history to discover.
  • Even if your vacation consists solely of lying on the beach or you're only in town for one night before sailing, make a point of visiting Marmaris' charming old town.
  • The town's major historic tourist attractions are Marmaris Castle and the surrounding cobblestone lanes of the old town, which lord it over the harbor.
  • When Sultan Suleyman the Magnificent's Ottoman troops recaptured the island of Rhodes, the castle served as a staging area.
  • Some of the halls are now used to display artifacts discovered in the area, while the ramparts provide panoramic views of the bay.
  • The climb to the castle takes you through the narrow cobblestone streets of the old town, which are surrounded by whitewashed cottages with bougainvillea spilling over the walls.
  • Just steps away from the bustle of the harbor, this tiny area provides a tranquil respite.
destination - Seasons to travel

Rhodes old town

  • The Greek island of Rhodes, the largest of the Dodecanese Islands, is only a one-hour catamaran ferry ride away from April to October.
  • Because of its proximity and the availability of one-day return transportation tickets, this Greek island is one of the most popular places to visit while staying in Marmaris.
  • If you only have one day, focus your sightseeing in Rhodes Town, where all of the major tourist attractions are within easy walking distance of the port where you will disembark.
  • The main focus is the UNESCO World Heritage-listed walled old town, with its cobblestone alleys and golden-toned stone ramparts leading to the dramatic Grand Masters Palace.
