A Sneak Peek into Zermatt

destination - Seasons to travel
  • The Valais region's climbing and winter sports capital are one of Switzerland's great international resorts, nestled in a green valley surrounded by steep mountainsides.
  • Zermatt is dominated by the iconic Matterhorn, a massive and gracefully curved mountain from which almost any angle provides a postcard view.
  • Zermatt is not accessible by automobile. A vast carpark about five kilometres from the hamlet, to which electric vehicle shuttles run, is the closest you can get by automobile.
  • Passengers are dropped off in the hamlet by trains from Brig, where a rack railroad, funicular, and cableways whisk them away to an infinite series of panoramic Alpine views and skiing and hiking routes.
  • Zermatt is recognised for its outstanding long ski lines with terrain appropriate for skiers of all abilities, but it also offers outdoor pleasure in the other seasons.
  • Zermatt has plenty of hotels, good restaurants, and luxury spas, but the mountains are still the primary draw, summer or winter.
  • Population: 5,800
  • Currency: Swiss franc
  • Time: UTC+02
  • Driving side: Right
  • Main Electricity: 230 V
  • Official Language: German

Top Tourist Attractions in Zermatt

destination - Seasons to travel
  • Without the sharp pyramid of the Matterhorn as a dramatic backdrop, Zermatt would be just another pretty little Swiss village rather than a world-famous symbol of the Alps and of Switzerland itself.
  • Zermatt offers year-round skiing due to the surrounding glaciers, with ski terrain at altitudes ranging from 2,500 to 3,900 meters and Switzerland's highest vertical drop of more than 2,133 meters.
  • The Gornergrat Bahn, Europe's highest mountain railroad that runs through open country, takes 45 minutes to climb 10 kilometres to the Gornergrat's summit.
  • The trip on Europe's highest cable car from the Trockener Steg to the north face of the Kleines Matterhorn is one of the most spectacular in a place where spectacular scenery becomes almost routine.

Best Months to Visit Zermatt

destination - Seasons to travel
  • From June to September: Zermatt's climate is delightful due to its elevation of 1,600 meters.
  • Between June and September, summertime is the best time to visit Zermatt.
  • With daytime highs averaging 15 degrees Celsius, September is generally ideal for hiking and biking.
  • It's also an excellent time for skiing and other outdoor activities.
  • From November to January: Christmas and New Year's is another peak season for tourism in Zermatt, particularly adventure seekers.
  • Lodging is expensive at this time of year, and reservations must be made well in advance.
  • Even though temperatures can suddenly dip below freezing, this is the time of year when skiers from all over the world descend on Mt. Matterhorn.
  • From February to May: After Easter, the tourist crowds dwindle significantly, and Zermatt empties abruptly.
  • Zermatt's winter ski season lasts longer than any other resort in Europe, from late November to early May. Summer skiing is also available, but not all lifts and slopes are open all year.
  • The temperature is between 5 and 10 degrees Celsius.

The Matterhorn

  • Without the sharp pyramid of the Matterhorn as a dramatic backdrop, Zermatt would be just another pretty little Swiss village rather than a world-famous symbol of the Alps and of Switzerland itself.
  • The mountain defines Zermatt and gives a year-round attractiveness that no other ski resort can match, making it the Swiss poster child.
  • The 4,478-meter peak was first scaled by a British team of five climbers and two Swiss guides in 1865.
  • Even though a few thousand people master it each year, it should only be attempted by experienced climbers.

Skiing and Winter Sports

  • Zermatt offers year-round skiing due to the surrounding glaciers, with ski terrain at altitudes ranging from 2,500 to 3,900 meters and Switzerland's highest vertical drop of more than 2,133 meters.
  • Skiing on the Breithorn plateau, via the cableway to the Kleines Matterhorn, and on the 3,500-meter Plateau, Rosa near the Theodul Pass are available in the summer.
  • Other options include heli-skiing, high-altitude ski tours, Nordic trails, and night skiing, but you don't have to ski to enjoy winter sports here.
  • Natural ice skating rinks, snowshoe trails, and several curling rinks are available.
  • Zermatt does not attract large weekend crowds because it is located far enough away from major cities, and you can access three separate ski areas with a single pass
destination - Seasons to travel

The Gornergrat Railway

  • The Gornergrat Bahn, Europe's highest mountain railroad that runs through open country, takes 45 minutes to climb 10 kilometres to the Gornergrat's summit.
  • The rack-railroad travels in a large loop up the Riffelberg mountains on the east side of Nikolai valley, affording ever-impressive views of the Matterhorn.
  • Riffelberg features a hotel and restaurant and a popular sundeck for skiers at 2,582 metres above sea level.
  • The Riffelsee, at 2,819 meters, is a few minutes' walk below the Rotenboden station; with the Matterhorn's peak mirrored in its water, the view is most spectacular in the morning.
  • The line runs high above the Gorner Glacier to the summit station, at 3,089 meters.
  • The famed Gornergrat observatory is merely a five-minute climb, positioned on a rocky ridge above the Gorner glacier.
  • The Matterhorn lies in the centre, with the Breithorn, the Zwillinge twin peaks, the Lyskamm, and Monte Rosa to the left; the Mischabel range, including the 4,545-meter Dom - Switzerland's highest mountain entirely within Switzerland - to the north.
  • From the Gornergrat, you can trek back to Zermatt. The path descends sharply for the first 90 minutes to the Findel Glacier Restaurant, where a 45-minute detour leads to the Findel Glacier.
  • The walk continues from the restaurant through the resort village of Findeln, where it takes about an hour to reach Zermatt.

Dried meat

#FOOD

  • The cows and our black nose sheep breathe the fresh mountain air and are fortunate enough to graze in alpine meadows in the summer.
  • They spend the winters in barns supplied with plenty of hay produced during the summer months.
  • A small number of our cows are slaughtered in early autumn, and the meat is hung up to dry in an attic or a storehouse.
  • This preserving meat allows it to last all winter and has been used for generations by family farmers.
  • This Valais dried meat has the sought-after IGP (Protected Geographic Indication) designation, indicating that it was made with meat from the region.
  • The Valais region is also known for its Valais raw ham and Valais dry-cured bacon, IGP products.
  • Our black-nosed sheep's lamb is also of high quality.
  • The sheep graze on the alpine meadows, rich in wild herbs.
  • This gives the lamb a distinct flavour that is highly sought after and only available in the best Zermatt restaurants due to its scarcity.

Raclette du Valais

#FOOD

  • Raclette is simply a portion of semi-hard cow's cheese that has been heated until it begins to melt.
  • When the melted cheese has reached the desired consistency, it is scraped off and eaten on bread or other accompaniments.
  • According to popular belief, the cow herders brought the cheese to work with them and melted it over their evening campfires while moving their cows up to the summer pastures.
  • Since then, the tradition has endured!
  • The cheese, or Raclette du Valais AOP (Appellation d'Origine Protégée), receives its label after being manufactured and processed in the Valais region, and a genuine Raclette du Valais can even be traced back to a single Alp.
  • The cheese gets its unique creamy texture and fantastic flavour from milk from cows grazed on alpine pastures and the ageing process, which takes three to six months.
  • Raclette du Valais can be heated traditionally in front of a roaring fire or on a tabletop grill, now served in many Zermatt restaurants.
  • These come with small pans called 'Couples' that collect the cheese as it melts and can then be served with Valais dried meats, Valais raw ham, and various pickles.
  • Raclette du Valais is a very social meal eaten slowly with local wines and friends.
