The Best Places to Visit in Vaxjo
Swedish Glass Museum
- Despite its name, this attraction is a county museum dedicated to the island of Smland, which was founded in the 18th century.
- A large exhibition showcasing the county, its culture, and history is still displayed.
- However, it has shifted its focus to Sweden's glass sector since the 1930s, which is fitting given that Växjö is known as the Kingdom of Crystal's capital.
- The museum houses about 40,000 pieces of glassware made by over 100 Swedish glassworks, the oldest from the 1580s.
- Glassmaking and its materials and techniques are covered in total, and the museum hosts a series of shows for modern glass artists each year.
Växjö Cathedral
- The city's red brick and ashlar cathedral date back to the 13th century, when a masonry church replaced a burned-down timber edifice.
- Fire played a significant role in the cathedral's history, and much of the construction dates from a renovation in the mid-nineteenth century after a fire the century before.
- Look for the Gustavian organ case, which dates from the 18th century, amid the whitewashed interior.
- Jan Brazda, a modern sculptor, designed the altar, pulpit, baptismal font, and some of the highly coloured stained-glass windows.
- During excavations in the choir in the 1800s, a Viking runestone was discovered and put against the cathedral's eastern wall.
Swedish Emigrant Institute
- Around 1.3 million Swedes emigrated to North America between 1843 and 1930.
- Given Sweden's current population of just under 10 million people, this was a huge event.
- The Swedish Emigrant Institute is a museum with exhibits detailing the reasons and repercussions of the departure that studies this wave of emigration.
- There's information about some of the more well-known settlers and their accomplishments in places like Minnesota.
- You can also learn about the writings of Vilhelm Moberg, a Swedish author who travelled around America's Swedish communities and wrote a series of historical fiction novels on emigration.

Kronoberg Castle
- The ruins of a 15th-century fortification may be found on an island in Helgasjön lake.
- This bastion sat on the boundary between Sweden and Denmark for nearly 200 years, and as a result, it saw a lot of combat. It was attacked, captured, and put to ruins by the Danes three times, and each time it was rebuilt.
- Finally, the castle became obsolete and was abandoned after the Treaty of Roskilde in 1658 established peace between Sweden and Denmark.
- A wooden footbridge connects it to the shore, and information boards tell you about the fort's turbulent past.
- The fort's thick walls are pretty attractive against the water from the shore, and you may enjoy the view while eating a meatball sandwich from the cafe.
Ångaren Thor
- A steamboat, the S/S Thor, is moored near the castle and celebrated its 130th anniversary in 2017.
- Thor sails around the lake regularly during the summer, with additional sailings scheduled on weekends.
- The Smland County Museum owns the boat, which used to transport freight and passengers between Räppe and Asa until the 1930s.
- Since then, it has been transporting tourists and locals on leisurely cruises around the lake for spectacular Kronoberg vistas.
- During the tour, you'll learn about the boat's illustrious past and the beauty and history of the lake.

the Linnaeus canal and Växjö lake lagoons
#FUN
- The city of Växjö is located in southern Sweden and is surrounded by forests and lakes.
- Many parts of Växjö's core city were built on wet and swampy terrain, subject to flooding during significant rain events.
- The street Linnégatan, built on a previously existing little stream and situated much lower than the surrounding built areas, is one of the most affected locations.
- Rainwater flooded the roadway and the basements and cellars of surrounding buildings in previous years.
- The Linnégatan canal, also known as the Linnaeus canal, was repaired by the City of Växjö at the end of the 1990s to prevent flooding in the streets and adjacent regions and to regulate the flow of stormwater to the Växjö lake.
- The canal and its associated sedimentation lagoons show adaptability to extreme weather events.

- Linné was a high school student at Karolinerhuset, located in the northern section of the park near the cathedral, and was born in Rshult, Smland, in 1707.
