The Best Places to Visit in Southern Dalarna
Falu Gruva
- By the 17th century, Falun's kopparbergs gruva had become the world's most important copper mine.
- It was dubbed 'Sweden's treasure chest' because it fueled the tiny country's international ambitions, supported wars, and helped paint all those red summer houses.
- You may either take a one-hour underground mine tour or stroll above ground, where you'll discover the Mine Museum and various heritage outbuildings, cafes, and stores.
- The stunning Stora Stöten (Great Pit), created by a vast mine collapse in the 17th century, is a must-see.
- Thankfully, the miners were on holiday that day, and no one was hurt.
- Lookouts and various mine facilities around the crater's edge, including a 15-meter waterwheel and shaft-head machinery.
Carl Larsson-gården
- Don't miss Sweden's'most famous mansion,' nestled in the lovely village of Sundborn, 13 kilometres northeast of Falun.
- After their deaths, their children entirely preserved the early-20th-century home of artist Carl Larsson and his wife Karin, but it's not a bleak memorial: 'Lilla Hyttnäs' is a piece of art in and of itself, full of brightness, humour, and love.
- An hour-long guided tour is required for admission; call ahead to book English-language tours or take an English handbook and follow the Swedes.
- Carl's portraits of his wife and children are displayed around the house, while Karin's tapestries and embroidery indicate that she was just as talented an artist as her husband.
- The current styles will inspire interior decorators and designers throughout the house (particularly in the dining room).
- At the same time, the family's way of life, which was infused with art and learning, offers a message for everyone.
Orsa Rovdjurspark
- The major attraction at Europe's largest predator park, 16 kilometres north of Orsa, is fat-bottomed roly-poly bear cubs.
- There's enough to view even if there aren't any cubs around: polar bears, Kodiak bears, leopards, Amur tigers, lynx, wolves, red foxes, and wolverines.
- The park and its varied activities continue to grow, with bike tours, themed walks, and more now available.
- The animals have a lot of areas, including woodland and water, which is excellent for them, but it also means there are a lot of opportunities to hide, so you might not see the more timid ones.

Mine Museum
- The Falu Gruva mine museum, located right behind the ticket-sales building at the mine's entrance, exhibits the mine's history, administration, engineering, geology, and copper production.
- Also displays on the miners' hospital, the world's largest coin, and different myths and tales.
- If you're unable or unable to go into the dark, damp, but fascinating depths, the museum entrance also grants you free access to the gardens, which is well worth it.
