The Best Places to Visit in Vigo
Castro Fortress
- The most excellent way to get a sense of the city and its vast scenery is to look out the windows of this 17th-century stronghold.
- Vigo's estuary, harbour, old quarter, mountainscapes, and the Cés Islands will all be visible from this vantage point.
- During the Portuguese Restoration War, the stronghold was built as an artillery installation to defend Vigo from British naval attacks.
- Formal gardens with grass, well-kept flower beds, and a central fountain, all with beautiful 360-degree views of the city, are contained within the walls.
Cíes Islands
- Visit this beautiful uninhabited archipelago at the mouth of the Vigo Estuary.
- Two firms (Mar de Ons and Nabia Naviera) run ferries from the harbour to the islands at around half-hour intervals during the summer.
- You can remain at the campsite overnight (tent rentals are available), but you'll need to plan ahead of time because the 800-berth site fills up rapidly.
- Hike up granite cliff-tops more than 100 metres high on the shattered western side while a different atmosphere greets you on the sheltered east, where white sand beaches sparkle in the sun.
Beaches on the Cíes Islands
- The beaches of the Ces Islands merit a second mention because there are few places on the planet with more beautiful bays.
- Indeed, Playa de Rodas frequently appears in the top ten rankings of the world's best beaches and is a near-paradisiacal spot for sunbathing and swimming in the summer.
- It's a landward beach, protected from the open ocean by immaculate white sands that give the sea an azure shimmer on bright days.
- On the other side of Punta Muxiero, Praia de Figueiras is a 350-meter-long beach that is less well-known than its southern neighbour but no less magnificent.

Vigo Off the Beaten Track
- The ancient town of Vigo is built on a hill that meets the estuary at the old port, with lanes leading to attractive arcaded squares such as Praza da Constitución.
- This is the portion of town where fishers' huts coexist with fancier structures such as luxury townhouses and the 19th-century church of Santa Mara.
- Almost all are made of Galician granite, giving the old town a dignified air that sets it apart from many other Spanish old quarters.
- Many street names refer to old trades, such as basket-weavers on Ra Cesteiros and, of course, basket-weavers on Calle de las Ostras.
