  • Before the 16th century, the Mar Menor was a combination of two islands. As the islands began to merge, they created 21 km of land to the north and south, closing the Mar Menor and transforming it into what it is today—a sizable salty lake cut off from the Mediterranean. The history of the Mar Menor can be traced back only about four centuries.
  • The water currents and sediments of the sea in the waterways where the Mediterranean Sea and Mar Menor meet are daily forming and reshaping this area, whether by the hand of nature until the 20th century or from the hand of Man after that century.
  • La Manga changes daily in both shape and form. It belonged to the state until 1863 when it was auctioned off to the general public.
  • Urbanizations, apartment buildings, chalets, discos, bars, and everything else have all been constructed in just the last 50 or 60 years, making La Manga a well-liked tourist destination.
  • La Manga, which has 40 km of beaches today, is one of the few locations where you can take a dip in both the Mediterranean and the Mar Menor Seas simultaneously.
  • Since the 1960s, many cities have expanded significantly, including Cabo de Palos (previously a small fishing village), San Javier, Los Alcazares, Cartagena, and San Pedro de Pinatar.
