  • In the seventeenth century, Ciudad Real became the seat of the province of La Mancha following the unification of the peninsular kingdoms under the Catholic Monarchs.
  • This characteristic favoured its economic growth, which was invested in significant structures.
  • The Puerta de Toledo, one of the eight gates that opened in the city's walled territory, is a notable example of La Mancha Mudejar architecture from the 14th century. Two square towers flank its pointed horseshoe arches.

  • The Puerta de Toledo is one of the few fragments of the once impregnable city wall. On the wall, the Castilian stone shield is still discernible.
  • The Museum of Don Quixote has an abundant library, many displays, and a collection of paintings and engravings featuring the adored hero.

The Best Places to Visit in Ciudad Real

destination - Seasons to travel

Church of San Pedro

  • The Knights of the Flower and Cream of Ciudad Real (Velarde, Céspedes, and Treviso) gave the order to construct the structure in the latter half of the 14th century.
  • This temple was initially intended to honour both Saints Peter and Paul. Still, because of building issues and changes made to accommodate later creative movements, it was not completed as originally intended.
  • Ramrez de Arellano claims that the parish commissioned the Ciudad Real architect to construct a choir at the church's base in 1615. In 1765, the altar for Nuestra Seora de la Gua was built there in a Churrigueresque style, with the image of the virgin saint seated on a silver chair and facing the main altar.
  • The Lisbon earthquake of 1755 caused the roof to collapse and one of the inner columns to become agitated.
  • Anarchist soldiers from the Torres de Valdepeas Battalion committed several anti-clerical acts during the Spanish Civil War, including destroying a portion of the temple's artistic legacy, including religious statues, pieces of the choir, the stalls and the altar, and the alabaster altarpiece of the Virgin of Loreto from the Chapel of Alonso de Coca.
  • The tower, one of the highest points in the city at the time, was armed with submachine guns, and this militia utilised the temple as a tank storage area.

Toledo Gate

  • The Toledo Gate, commissioned to be constructed along the royal road running north of the city from Toledo to Sevilla, is the gate of the wall currently in the best condition.
  • According to an engraving discovered on the Toledo Gate, it was finished in 1328.
  • It was designated a Spanish National Monument in 1915. Due to normal issues with humidity, the environment, and microbes in the stone, it has been the subject of various interventions throughout its history.
  • When the most current restoration was finished in 2013, significant discoveries were made, including sculpting four busts that helped date the structure by appearing in the keystones of the vaults as you enter the gate.
destination - Seasons to travel

Don Quixote

  • The various exhibits at the centre focus on Don Quixote, the well-known book by Cervantes.
  • A conversation between ten characters from the book is shown in this montage. Also included are about ten drawings by José Jiménez Aranda, one of Don Quixote's top 19th-century illustrators, on topics linked to Cervantes.
  • The first printed version of the book was created in a Madrid printing press at the beginning of the 17th century, and one of the rooms recreates this ambience. Another feature is a brief audiovisual montage about the book.
  • A significant collection of 3,500 volumes of books on Cervantes-related subjects is also available in the museum library.
