The Best Places to Visit in Bratislava
Bratislava Castle
- The massive four-tower structure, which sits in the middle of town atop a rocky hill, is challenging to miss anywhere in Bratislava.
- The towers provide a fantastic view of Bratislava, but you can see Austria and parts of Hungary on a clear day.
- The Crown Tower, which stands 47 meters tall and once housed the crown jewels, is the oldest of the towers. It was built in the 13th century.
- Over the centuries, the castle had undergone numerous renovations, including a significant expansion and conversion when Maria Theresa of Austria became queen in 1740.
- The castle, however, suffered a series of misfortunes in the early 1800s: it was first shot with cannons by Napoleon, then caught fire a few years later, and was eventually abandoned and left in ruins.
- Work on the restoration didn't begin until 1953.
- The castle now houses a branch of the Slovak National Museum, which houses documents, photographs, and objects documenting the region's development in the middle Ages.
- On the castle's grounds, you'll also find the ruins of an 11th-century Great-Moravian basilica.
Michael's Gate
- Michael's gate is the only remaining city gate from the fortified walls and towers built in the 1300s.
- The gate has been reconstructed several times over the years, including a Baroque-inspired reconstruction in 1758 that included the addition of the current massive St. Michael and the Dragon statue atop the gate.
- The tower now houses a weapons exhibition and documents, photographs, and models illustrating the history of the city walls and how they influenced the city over time.
- Climb to the top of the tower for a view of the Old City from a balcony with one of the best views.
Slovak National Theatre
- The Slovak National Theatre comprises two structures: a Neo-Renaissance structure in Old Town that opened in 1886 as the City Theater and a newly designed system in 2007.
- The old theatre is right on Hviezdoslavovo Square, in a neighbourhood known for its cafés.
- It only featured Hungarian and German theatre performances when it first opened. It wasn't until after WWII that operas began to be performed in their original language (with Slovak subtitles).
- The new theatre is located on the Danube River's banks in an upscale residential neighbourhood known for its high-end shops and restaurants.
- In recent years, theatres have emphasized a mix of international performers and shows by well-known writers worldwide.
