SEASONS TO TRAVEL
Best Months to Visit Moscow
- The best time to visit Moscow are April and May, when temperatures begin to rise into the 50s and 60s, the sun begins to shine for longer periods of time, and hotel rates have not yet reached peak levels.
- Summer, of course, is the best time to visit because the city is warm and bustling.
- However, if you want to (slightly) avoid the perpetually high rates, travel during the shoulder seasons in the spring and early fall.
- Spring is preferable because fall has more rainfall and less sunlight.
- Winters in Moscow are bitterly cold, but this is when you'll get a true sense of the city (A frost-bitten walk through Red Square seems to intensify the historical significance of this great capital city).

The Best Places to Visit in Moscow
Kremlin
- The Kremlin, a 15th-century fortified complex covering 275,000 square meters and surrounded by 1400s walls, is without a doubt Moscow's most recognizable structure.
- The Grand Kremlin Palace, which has over 700 rooms, was once the home of the Tsar family and is now the official residence of the Russian Federation's president, though most heads of state prefer to live somewhere else.
- Many other structures are also part of the massive complex, some of which are open to the public and can be visited on a regular basis.
- Aside from three cathedrals and a number of towers, the Armory building houses the Armory Museum, which houses everything from the royal crown and imperial carriages to Ivan the Terrible's ivory throne and Fabergé eggs.
Bolshoi Theatre
- The Bolshoi Theater is home to one of the world's largest and oldest ballet and opera companies.
- The theater has undergone several major renovations over the last century, the most recent in 2011 to restore some of the imperial architectural details, but it still retains its Neoclassical grandeur.
- After several previous versions of the Bolshoi Theater burned down, the current one was built in 1824. Red velvet, a three-tiered crystal chandelier, and gilt moldings inside give the place a grandiose Byzantine-Renaissance feel like no other.
- Seeing a performance by the resident ballet and opera companies is a treat, as the theater frequently presents classics like Tchaikovsky's Mazeppa and Rachmaninoff's Francesca da Rimini, both of which had their world premieres here.
GUM
- The oldest and most upscale shopping center in Moscow is a work of art.
- GUM was constructed in the late 1800s in neo-Russian style to display a beautiful mix of a steel skeleton and 20,000 glass panels forming an arched roof.
- This was a one-of-a-kind structure at the time, as the glass had to be strong enough to withstand the harsh Russian winters.
- Outside, the building is just as impressive, with marble and granite covering all three levels.

- Gorky Park is regarded as Moscow's most important park. It was built by Bolsheviks in 1928, fell into disarray in the 1990s, and was reconstructed in 2011 after a lengthy restoration project.
- The park now consists of several distinct territories and spans 120 hectares (300 acres) (depending on how you count it).
- Every weekend, approximately 250,000 people visit the park to relax and enjoy themselves; the park is so large that there is enough room for everyone!

- The first is the abundance of sporting opportunities: tennis, ping pong, volleyball, badminton, and pioneer ball, a favorite of Soviet children.
- A bike, rollerblades, skateboard, or even a seven-seat velo taxi can be rented.
- If you prefer less strenuous activities, a boat or catamaran can be rented for 400-500 rubles on the Golitsinsky and Pionersky ponds.

- You can walk there from the Red Square, Bolshoi Theater, or Tverskaya Street to see the park's observation deck for fantastic panoramic views of old Moscow!
- There had been no new parks built in Moscow in the previous 50 years, so when the city government announced a competition for the best park design, they knew they had to come up with something spectacular.

- A large hotel stood here during the Soviet era, but it was demolished in 2006, leaving the area vacant for many years until the concept of a public space was approved.
