Sete Cidades Caldera
- Nothing compares to the majesty of the Sete Cidades Massif on So Miguel Island's west side.
- Twin Green and blue lakes are surrounded by lush flora and protected by a large volcanic crater with ramparts.
- Over the last 38,000 years, volcanic eruptions have created this terrain.
- The most recent eruption could have occurred in the 1400s, soon before the island was colonised.
- There are plenty of vantage places for spectacular views, but the Vista do Rei overlook on the southern rim, near the abandoned Monte Palace Hotel, is worth noting.
Capelinhos
- The Capelinhos volcano erupted from September 1957 to October 1958, changing the face of Faial Island permanently.
- This resulted in forming a whole new island, which was eventually connected to Faial by an isthmus.
- Moreover, despite no casualties, the destruction drove 1,800 people to emigrate permanently to the United States.
- It's a rush to be able to step on ground that was once only ocean 60 years ago or to see roofs immersed in ash.

- Take a look at the destroyed lighthouse, which has been turned into a volcano museum.
Angra do Heroísmo

Montanha do Pico
- On Pico Island, the Montanha do Pico, at 2,351 metres, is the highest point in Portugal.
- This stratovolcano, which is frequently seen disappearing into the sky, can appear dangerous, and its most recent eruption occurred in 1718.
- However, you may not realise at first that it is not particularly difficult to climb and does not necessitate any special equipment other than excellent hiking shoes.
- Before starting, you must sign in at the tourist centre, and the entire road to the peak is marked by wooden poles every 50 metres or so that indicate the elevation.
- You'll be able to see the islands of Graciosa, Faial, Terceira, and So Jorge if you're lucky enough to climb on a clear day.
Lagoa do Fogo
- Another magnificent crater lake on So Miguel Island is one of the most incredible pools of water in the Azores.
- Given the serenity of the setting, which includes rare Azorean flora on the steep slopes surrounding it, it appears unlikely that the most recent eruption occurred only in 1563. A natural reserve has been established to maintain the lake's natural beauty.
- You'll begin by driving up to the rim, which is an experience in and of itself, complete with hairpin curves.
- Then take some shots and make your way down to the beach.
