A Sneak Peek into Algarve

destination - Seasons to travel
  • Portugal's Algarve is its southern region and one of Europe's most well-liked holiday spots.
  • The province experiences long, warm winters and hot, dry summers thanks to its excellent coastline and some of the nation's most beautiful beaches.
  • The warm sea temperatures and the calm winds enhance its attraction.
  • The Algarve, a region of contrast, offers a variety of things to do. Holiday time is spent in Portugal by more than half of all visitors.
  • Popular and more developed, the central region of Portugal provides a variety of top-notch tourist attractions, bustling beach resorts, and top-notch golf courses.
  • Further east, a group of sandbar islands and lagoons make up a stunning natural park under protection, and the border towns and villages have a decidedly Spanish feel.
  • A different Algarve beckons to the west. Surfers come here to commune with the restless Atlantic Ocean in a wilder, more secluded setting away from the masses.

  • Praia dos Três Irmos is one of the Algarve's top beaches. Your go-to location for swimming, snorkelling, and tanning is this beach.
  • One of the top attractions in the Algarve is Algar de Benagil, which is close to Praia de Benagil. Algar is a cave.

Best Months to Visit Algarve

destination - Seasons to travel
  • With the heat and the people, July and August can be a bit of a nightmare, but if you're staying in a country farmhouse with a pool and shaded woodland, you can enjoy the long, hot summer days to the fullest.
  • If you want to stroll or bike across the Algarve, April to June is the most outstanding season.
  • In September and October, temperatures are still in the 18-to-20-degree range.
  • The festival in early October allows birdwatchers to bid farewell to feathered friends as they fly away into the clear skies above the Atlantic.
  • Sagres is the final strategic point for birds migrating to Africa.

The Best Places to Visit in Algarve

destination - Seasons to travel

Faro

  • Busy The Algarve's central city of Faro serves as the entrance point for many travellers entering southern Portugal.
  • With a population of over 50,000, the area's capital city of Faro, serves as a vital hub for modern manufacturing and industry.
  • However, the Old Town is where visitors most likely want to go. The Cidade Velha of Faro is encircled by thick defensive walls and was constructed on Roman and Moorish ruins.
  • The majority of what you see dates today from the 18th and 19th centuries, even though the town suffered substantial damage from the great earthquake of 1755.
  • Cobblestone streets and green spaces surround the famous church.
  • You'll discover a variety of cafes and eateries as you explore them, nestled between rows of tidy houses and studios for artists.
  • Artefacts discovered here and elsewhere are displayed in a fantastic museum.
  • On the next esplanade lies a tiny marina, and beyond that are lagoons and marshes teeming with aquatic life.
  • This magnificent natural park comprises some islets and substantial sandbars, each with its magnificent beach, one of which is named after the city
destination - Seasons to travel

Vila Real de Santo António

  • Since this is as close to Spain as you can get without going over the border, it is equally likely that Spanish and Portuguese are spoken.
  • The shops and markets in Vila Real de Santo António cater to Spanish visitors, but this charming border town also has a wealth of tourist attractions that are well worth seeing.
  • The magnificent Arquivo Histórico Municipal on Avenida da Repblica remembers the region's almost extinct sardine and tuna canning industry with a lively interactive display that is open to the public.
  • In the middle of the charming main square, Praça Marques de Pombal, bordered by orange trees and a variety of warm cafés and restaurants, a spectacular mosaic sunburst emerges from an obelisk.
  • Take the ferry from the pier close to the marina for an exciting detour to the lively tapas restaurants and classically designed delicatessens of the Spanish border town of Ayamonte.
  • The ferry ride across the River Guadiana, which can transport cars, lasts roughly 20 minutes.
  • Ten minutes’ drive north of Vila Real is the evergreen Castro Marim village, which is dominated by a magnificent castle from the thirteenth century.
  • Its vast ramparts, accessible to the general public, provide lovely views of the nearby coastline at Reserva Natural do Sapal natural park
destination - Seasons to travel

Alcoutim

  • The eastern Algarve's arid and poorly populated interior is rarely travelled to and is generally not listed on any tourism websites.
  • Alcoutim, a gorgeous border community, is located 40 kilometres north of Vila Real. The journey itself is worthwhile.
  • Instead of using the IC27 dual carriageway, take the route that hugs the Guadiana River, a vast, meandering canal that acts as a natural border between Spain and Portugal.
  • A whitewash smear marks this riverbank jewel, and the tiny hamlet appears to have been conjured by an exceptionally gifted artist.
  • Alcoutim, a key river port once ruled by the Greeks, Romans, and mainly the Arabs, later served as the location of the peace agreement signed in 1371 between King Fernando I of Portugal and King Enrique II of Castile.
  • Visitors are still greeted by an Alcoutim that is peaceful and asleep. Exploring the 14th-century castle is the ideal place to start tourism (the entrance fee includes access to a miniature archaeological museum by the main gates).
  • The Spanish community of Sanlcar de Guadiana, located on the other bank of the river, may be seen from the castle walls, which also provide beautiful views of the surrounding area.
  • A frequent ferry service connects the two settlements, but there is also an additional, utterly thrilling way to cross the river.
  • The only cross-border zipline company is on the Spanish side, high above Sanlcar.
  • Speeding from one nation to another also involves crossing a time zone because Spain and Portugal are separated by one hour.

Algarve Off the Beaten Track

destination - Seasons to travel

Tavira

  • Tavira, close to the water, is one of the most beautiful towns in the eastern Algarve.
  • This popular tourist site is known for its rich historical heritage, influenced by the Romans and the Moors, whose town by the river was capped by a castle that is still clearly visible today. It is situated on both sides of the broad River Gilo.
  • This region of the Algarve is the only one with the hipped roofs that characterise most of Tavira's architecture.
  • The old town is adorned by 21 churches, which is also how many there are. A magnificent bridge that spans the river was constructed in the 17th century on Roman ruins.
  • One of the most significant ways to experience Tavira is to stroll down the riverbank; in the summer, the palm-lined gardens are flecked with colour, and a nearby market is stocked to the gills with seasonal produce.
  • Ferries leave from the harbour for the popular sun-seeker location of Ilha de Tavira, one of the few islands in the region where camping is allowed.
  • A magnificent, pristine river that is a part of a natural park, the Ria Formosa, is another option for a sightseeing trip.
destination - Seasons to travel

Olhão

  • The Algarve's busiest fishing port, Olho, is all about the water, and the town's lively main street, Avenida da Repblica, is home to some of the best seafood restaurants in the region.
  • Visit Olho to shop its excellent harbourfront market, the biggest and liveliest on the coast, which is another reason to pay a visit.
  • The fish market, which opens at dawn, is bursting at the seams with the freshest produce you will ever taste.
  • It is sleek and silver in appearance. A rustic riot of freshly gathered fruits and vegetables, a farmer's selection of delectable country fare complements this Atlantic harvest.
  • Olho lacks any significant tourist attractions while giving off a definite North African vibe with its casbah-cluster of whitewashed flat-roofed homes.
  • The pristine Parque Natural do Ria Formosa may be explored from the waterfront town, which is an excellent starting point.
  • A fantastic network of nature paths allows visitors to explore the area's abundant animals and diverse habitats.
  • Others are drawn to this region of Portugal because Olho is close to the magnificent, nearly uninhabited sandbar islands of Armona, Culatra, and Farol.

Algarve Culture and Traditions

destination - Seasons to travel
  • In Portugal's culturally rich Algarve region, you may observe how people live through their arts and music.
  • The heritage of five centuries of Arab dominion is still present, as are the Moorish effects on Portuguese culture.
  • Decorative chimneys, the Algarvian rooster (also the country's insignia), and painted tiles are local heritage symbols (Azulejos).
  • Some of the Algarve's customs include making pottery and wicker baskets, fishing (mainly in Olho), celebrating prominent saints, and gatherings of Charolas (popular musicians groups).
  • Numerous churches and castles constructed in earlier eras are also essential components of Portuguese culture.
  • In larger coastal cities and smaller interior villages, museums maintain the local culture and many of its representative works.
