  • Wroclaw is one of Poland's most beautiful and lively cities, a cosmopolitan metropolis with an important university, a diverse range of restaurants and pubs, designer shops, and theatre and musical events.
  • The scene is set by the Odra River and scores of tiny canals that meander through the city's tree-lined streets, lined with tall, multi-coloured buildings.
  • Wroclaw, in reality, is made up of 12 islands connected by over 100 bridges, and it begs to be explored.
  • Visit Wroclaw, and you'll feel like you've stepped back in time, although the vibe is global.
  • The city is one of Poland's oldest, dating back to the 7th century when residents settled on the island of Otrów Tumski (Cathedral Island).
  • That location is still a hub of activity today. Visitors and residents alike dine-in bistro-style restaurants, shop for trendy clothing and attend the theatre or philharmonic performances.

Top Tourist Attractions in Wroclaw

destination - Seasons to travel
  • Wroclaw, the capital of Lower Silesia, is frequently ranked as one of the most livable cities in Europe.
  • Wrocaw's history is incredibly complicated, as eight distinct kingdoms and empires have ruled it during the last 1,000 years.
  • Wrocaw obtained much of its Baroque architecture and cultural institutions, such as a university that has produced nine Nobel Prize winners, during the Habsburg Monarchy in the Early Modern Period.
  • Wroclaw is also known as "Poland's Venice" because of the Oder River's division into distinct arms crossed by more than 100 bridges.
  • A three-month siege after WWII destroyed much of the city, yet you'd never know it is looking at Wrocaw's historical beauties today.

Best Months to Visit Wroclaw

  • Wroclaw is open all year, but March-May is the best time because of the great weather, low travel costs, and the absence of high holiday seasons.
  • August is the hottest month in Wroclaw, with average temperatures of roughly 26°C (79°F); however, temperatures can reach as high as 30°C (87°F) on the hottest summer days.
  • Temperatures in the winter can drop to -8°C (18°F) in January.
  • In August, the sun stays up the longest in Wroclaw, so make the most of your daytime activities if you visit this month.
  • May has the rainiest days, making it the year's wettest month.
  • Although it is the rainy season, it can often rain a little throughout the day or evening, but there is usually clear weather for the day, so don't be put off.

The Best Places to Visit in Wroclaw

destination - Seasons to travel

Old Town

  • Wroclaw was nearly levelled during the Siege of Breslau, which only adds to the awe-inspiring skyline of church spires and Baroque gabled mansions.
  • Market Square and Cathedral Island should be your top priority, but those who want to wander and see what they can find will be rewarded in Wroclaw.
  • Plac Solny is known for its nonstop flower market and the city's tallest church, St Elizabeth, which has a tower you can climb if you have the energy.
  • A short distance up the street is Stare Jatki, in the ancient butchers' area, which features a continuous series of buildings dating from the 1600s and 1700s.
  • While exploring the Old Town, see how many of Wrocaw's 300 small bronze "dwarf" statues you can spot.
destination - Seasons to travel

Rynek (Market Square)

  • Wroclaw's Market Square is one of the largest in Poland, if not all of Europe, at 3.8 hectares.
  • The Market Square, like the rest of the Old Town, has a nearly identical layout to when it was designed in the middle of the 13th century.
  • After WWII, most of the architecture, especially the rows of colourful tenements that frame the square, required extensive renovation.
  • The pillory, located right next to the Town Hall, was built in 1492 and had to be reassembled.
  • This, together with the Zdrój fountain from the year 2000 and the statue of writer Aleksander Fredro, is one of Wroclaw's three favourite meet-up spots.
destination - Seasons to travel

Ostrów Tumski (Cathedral Island)

  • What was once an island in the Oder became the oldest part of Wroclaw.
  • To prevent floods, cutting off the arm of the river separating it from the bank was by the 19th century.
  • The river provided a natural defence when Ostrów Tumski was initially established in the 10th century, and the first brick buildings appeared in the middle of the 12th century.
  • One of the most beautiful for strolling, with churches at almost every turn and streets illuminated by authentic gas lamps at night.
  • You can see the old-fashioned lamp lighter illuminating the streets if you visit at dusk.
  • Allow an hour to visit the Archdiocese Museum at the bishop's palace to see the medieval treasures.
destination - Seasons to travel

Old Town Hall

  • The Old Town Hall is a collection of Gothic structures bundled together in one compound that stands at an angle on Market Square.
  • As Wrocaw grew from the end of the 13th century onwards, they added new wings to accommodate the city's political and economic changes during the next 250 years.
  • Look for the astronomical clock, which dates from 1580, on the Late Gothic east front. Inside, there is a free museum with exhibits about the building's history and aspects of life in Wroclaw, such as the city's tram system.
  • The sumptuous council chamber upstairs and the merchants' hall on the ground floor are well worth seeing.
  • In the basement, as in many former German lands, there is a beer cellar, which houses Piwnica widnicka, one of Europe's oldest eateries.

Racławice Panorama

  • On April 4, 1794, the Battle of Racawice took place, resulting in a Polish victory in the doomed Kociuszko Uprising against Russia.
  • To celebrate the battle's 100th anniversary, Lviv-based artist Jan Styka created a 15 × 114-metre cycloramic painting and enlisted the participation of other well-known artists of the time.
  • The panorama was a colossal hit, riding on a tide of Polish nationalism, and it stayed in Lviv until after WWII, when it was moved to Wroclaw.
  • Because of its patriotic subject matter during the Soviet Union's heyday, it wasn't released until 1985. Since then, the Racawice Panorama has been on display in Wrocaw's rotunda, depicting a conflict etched in Polish folklore.
destination - Seasons to travel

Wrocław University

  • The city's prestigious university's main structure also serves as a museum.
  • The Holy Roman Emperor Leopold founded this university in 1702, taking over from a Jesuit college. The lavishly decorated Baroque hall, Aula Leopoldina, with a ceiling fresco, gilded stucco, sculpted cherubs, and portraits of the university's founders, is one of the must-sees.
  • The Oratorium Marianum, currently the university's music hall, is also immensely rich. At the same time, the Mathematical Tower, with a 42-meter tower and a meridian line on its floor, is the ancient Astronomic Observatory.
  • In other display rooms, you can learn about the university where Alois Alzheimer taught and produced nine Nobel Laureates.
destination - Seasons to travel

Centennial Hall

  • The Centennial Hall, built-in 1913 to commemorate Napoleon's loss in the Battle of Leipzig, is a technological masterpiece from the conclusion of Wrocaw's German era.
  • This exhibition hall, conceived by city architect Max Berg and built at significant expenditure, demonstrated what could be done with reinforced concrete.
  • The Centennial Hall can hold 11,000 people and is surrounded by a 69-meter-high and 42-meter-wide dome.
  • The hall was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2006, recognising its revolutionary architecture, if not its aesthetics.
  • A discovery centre opened in the hall in 2009 after a renovation, setting out the facts and data via interactive displays and projecting a light show onto the vast dome.

  • Wroclaw, Silesia's historic capital, is one of Poland's largest and oldest cities.
  • Around 1000, Vratislavia was first recognised as a powerful city.
  • A Polish ecclesiastical see was established at that time.
  • The city fell under the control of the Czech king John of Luxembourg in 1335, breaking its links with Poland.
  • Later, Vratislav, along with the rest of Poland, fell under the control of the Hungarian kingdom, and the city's Hungarian name, Boroszló, derives from this period.
  • Wroclaw was absorbed into the Habsburg monarchy and the Czech crown and renamed Breslau.
  • Wroclaw was absorbed into the Kingdom of Prussia, and later the German Reich, until 1945, when Prussia took over the entire Silesia.
  • Wroclaw was returned to Poland after the Second World War.
  • It will be given the title over a series of activities over the next ten days, culminating in a large-scale performance dubbed "Awakening" on January 17.
  • It was designed by Chris Baldwin, one of the curators of the year-long Wroclaw event.
  • Over 100 events are planned for the three-day opening ceremony, including an exhibition titled "Made in Europe."
  • Twenty-five years of the European Union Award for Contemporary Architecture" and a one-person show by Basque sculptor Eduardo Chillidy, born in San Sebastian.

  • Pierogi ruskie are typically boiled before being quickly fried till crunchy.
  • The dumplings are frequently topped with cracklings, crispy fried onions, or bacon, and they can be served as an appetiser or a main meal.

  • Traditionally, sugar and sour cream are served with varenyky's sweet, fruit-filled variant.

Rosół

#Food

  • Rosó is a classic Polish pork soup that is warm and comforting.
  • Although the chicken variant, known as rosó z kury, is the most well-known, beef, veal, turkey, or mixed meat broths are also popular.
  • Pork should never be used since it produces a cloudy broth.
  • Rosó is typically made with meat that has been left on the bone, which adds to the flavour.
  • The beef is boiled in cold water with carrots, celery, and mushrooms, among other veggies.
  • It's usually seasoned gently with salt, pepper, and bay leaves.
  • Chopped parsley and thin noodles are added to the meal after being cooked.
  • Although Polish tradition dictates that the meat be kept out, it is occasionally chopped separately and added to the soup.
  • Rosó is a Polish national meal that is equally lauded as an appetiser in traditional restaurants and a hearty and calming home favourite, frequently cooked and eaten on weekends.

Zapiekanka

#Food

  • This unique open-faced sandwich is one of Poland's favourite fast foods.
  • An essential white baguette is cut lengthwise and topped with various delectable toppings and a hefty helping of grated semi-hard cheese before being roasted under the broiler.
  • This snack dates back to the 1970s when even the most basic foodstuffs were few in communist Poland, and people had to figure out how to make the best of what they had.
  • The original zapiekanka was made with sautéed mushrooms and cheese. Still, over time, pork, bacon, sausages, or even feta cheese, olives, and pineapple became popular toppings for these warm crusty sandwiches.
  • They're usually served sizzling hot, with a squirt of tomato ketchup on top.
  • Despite being available throughout the country, zapiekanka remains the most popular snack at Krakow's fast food stalls, particularly in the early hours of the weekend after a night of overindulgence.

Glass

#Food

  • Beef or pork is carefully cooked alongside onions in a rich, paprika-spiced broth in this classic Polish version of the famed Hungarian goulash.
  • It's usually served with various vegetables and herbs, resulting in a tasty, filling dish with a thick consistency.
  • Glass is traditionally served with bread, rice, or pasta as a side dish, and it is a robust main meal.

Pierogi

#Food

  • The name of these packed dumplings comes from the Russian word for pie, pirog.
  • This once-peasant dish has become one of Poland's most popular.
  • Every family has their pierogi filling recipe, and the chef's inventiveness only limits the items that can be utilised.
  • Cheese, onions, ground pork, mushrooms, potatoes, and sauerkraut are the most common pierogi fillings, sweet, savoury, or spicy.
  • Sweet variants frequently incorporate berries such as strawberries or blueberries.
  • These dumplings are traditionally served as the 12th course of a Polish Christmas Eve dinner.
  • The stuffing is commonly mushrooms, cabbage, and sauerkraut because the entire meal must be meatless.
  • Although pierogi have been around since the 13th century, no one knows where they came from; Poles, Romanians, Russians, Ukrainians, Lithuanians, and Slovaks all claim to be the originator.

Renoma

#Fashion

  • When you require some shopping therapy, the mall's sometimes soulless construction can be a particularly non-therapeutic aspect of the encounter.
  • We like Renoma because, instead of being covered in strange tinted windows and abstract grey cement, it's genuinely worth seeing for its architectural value.
  • This beautiful five-story modernist edifice, created in the 1930s, is a shopping house' rather than a shopping mall,' with historical charm radiating from its magnificent front.
  • It's a delight to spend a few hours or perhaps a whole day here, with everything you could want right at your fingers.
  • One hundred twenty retail outlets (including Renoma-exclusive brands), plush restaurants, a hair salon, travel agency, gym, bookstore, pharmacy, and florist. Even events such as concerts and film screenings are held on the roof in the summer.
  • It's almost as though Renoma were an all-inclusive resort.
  • The breathtaking rooftop view over the city of Wroclaw is the temple of temptation's crowning glory.

Wroclavia

#Fashion

  • We move away from the classical and toward the modern with Wroclavia; this shopping centre is all about convenience.
  • With tram, bus, train, and bike access, we're confident you'll be able to find a spot to pull up your steam-liner or park your aircraft.
  • The structure itself is entirely futuristic.
  • Wroclavia's forward-thinking architects prioritised using natural materials, renewable roofing materials, and excellent vertical gardens in their design to reduce their carbon impact.
  • There are no teleportation beams yet, but we're sure they're on the way.
  • Enough with the exterior; what about the inside?
  • Eighty per cent excellent shopping, eighteen per cent fun and food, and a smidgeon of pleased customers.
  • A vast 18 per cent of Wroclavia is filled with entertainment activities, restaurants & cafés (try the Dining ExperienceTM at the Grand Kitchen), and more.
  • Bring your friends, family, and robots because the futuristic Wroclavia Shopping Centre is the galactic leader in sheer shopping pleasure.

Arkady Wrocławskie

#Fashion

  • Last but not least, this destination retail mall offers public transportation connections and a convenient location to encourage your visit, but what sets it apart is its practical, family-friendly approach.
  • The Family Centre for Education and Fun 'Klockownia' is already supporting parents and spreading joy to the kids as part of their mission to make Arkady Wrocawskie a friendly environment for both adults and children.
  • Full supervision while you shop, two play areas, birthday celebrations, and accessible architecture and restrooms for the little ones are all available.
  • It will be refurbished in early 2019 to include five play areas and a cafe for parents.

Panorama Racławicka

#Fun

  • The Panorama of the Battle of Racawice, which stands 15 meters (49 feet) tall and spans 114 meters (374 feet), is almost too much to take in.
  • It's a stunning 19th-century work of art, with a panoramic splendour enhanced by its location in a spherical building with its own devoted space.
  • It was painted between 1893 and 1894 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of a Polish rebellion against Russia and features historical figures from Poland.
  • Special lighting and artificial terrain have been added to the canvas to enhance the experience.
  • It immerses you in the artwork as if you were a participant in the struggle.

Ostrów Tumski

#Fun

  • Ostrów Tumski is the city's oldest neighbourhood, dating back to the 10th century and evolving architecturally over time.
  • Originally a garden, it is now a must-see destination for its impressive historical buildings, significant monuments, sculptures, gardens, and charming bridges.
  • The spire of the Church of the Holy Cross and the Gothic Cathedral of St John the Baptist, which was renovated after WWII, is also worth visiting.
  • This ancient neighbourhood, Wrocaw's birthplace, is encircled by the Oder River, making it ideal for wandering weekenders.

Wrocław Multimedia Fountain

#Fun

  • Szczytnicki Park, near to the Centennial Hall, and the Wrocawska Fontanna Multimedialna (Wrocaw Multimedia Fountain).
  • Constructed in 2009 to commemorate the 20th anniversary of democratic elections – they are great places to visit to liven up an evening.
  • The 300 water jets and 800 lights that generate magnificent displays - geysers, water mists, and spurts – all enhanced by music are the secrets to its performative qualities (from classical to Madonna).
  • The shows air every hour in the middle of August; there are lengthier specials at 10 pm.
destination - Seasons to travel

Centennial Hall

#Fun

  • Since 2006, the Hala Stulecia has been a Unesco World Heritage Site, and for a good reason.
  • It was unveiled in 1913 and is Poland's most prominent cultural hall, hosting concerts, conferences, and exhibitions.
  • It was designed by Max Berg (1870-1947), the prominent city architect of Wroclaw (and its prior incarnation, Breslau).
  • Like the activities presented here, the design is a brilliant and eclectic mix of tradition and contemporary.
  • While visiting Szczytnicki Park and the Multimedia Fountain, look at its domed profile - it's close to both, and if you're lucky, you might get a peep inside, even if there's nothing on.
destination - Seasons to travel

Wrocław dwarves

#Fun

  • The Wroclaw dwarves, or goblins, are known locally as krasnale and may be found in large numbers throughout the city.
  • They're miniature bronze statues of characters from fairy tales and folklore that keep tourists in Wroclaw snapping away with their iPhones and cameras.
  • The Orange Alternative, an anti-Communist and anti-authoritarian movement that emerged in Wroclaw in the 1980s, is the source of these strange small apparitions.
  • They began as graffiti and have been in 3-D since 2005.

Ossolineum

#Fun

  • Anyone interested in libraries and literature will feel right at home at Poland's oldest publishing firm, founded in Lviv in 1827.
  • After WWII, it relocated to Wroclaw and now publishes both Polish and international titles under the National Classic brand.
  • You may tour the magnificent Baroque palace and marvel at the vast library and reading rooms.

  • Szczytnicki Park (Park Szczytnicki) is one of the oldest green spaces in the city, with natural fragments that have been conserved to this day. It covers more than a hundred hectares and is divided into four streets: Róyckiego, Paderewskiego, Kopernika, and Olszewskiego. The vast, 16-hectare park was kept in English style. However, Napoleon's forces badly devastated it in 1806.
  • With 90 hectares, Park Tysiclecia (Centennial Park) is Wrocaw's second-largest park. It is situated in the city's eastern outskirts, between Graniczna, Autostradowa Obwodnica Wrocawia, and the Ślęza River.
  • Lenicki Park is located across the Bystrzyca River, another Wrocaw river. It is located outside the city centre and is usually visited by Lenica residents and attendees of events held at the nearby Cultural Center (Centrum Kultury Zamek), which acts as a cultural centre.
  • South Park (Park Poudniowy) is also a popular hangout spot for Wroclaw residents. Its foundation has a fascinating history. Julius Schottländer, a wealthy merchant and philanthropist, donated 25 hectares of land in a high-class section of Wroclaw to the city in 1877.
  • Western Park (Park Zachodni) is one of Wroclaw's most popular parks, with 75 hectares between Lotnicza and Pilczycka streets. It is built on the site of a former cemetery, which was once one of the largest in Lower Silesia's city.
