- Gobki means "small pigeons," even though these cabbage rolls have nothing to do with birds.
- Traditionally, boiling cabbage leaves are wrapped around a pig and rice mixture.
- However, there are other satisfying options, such as fowl and mutton and vegetarian options.
- After that, the rolls are cooked in stock. A delectable dense homemade tomato sauce is poured over the gobki once placed on plates.
- Polish cabbage rolls are typically served with bread and boiled potatoes.
- According to folklore, King Kazimierz fed gobki to his army before a battle against the Teutonic Order outside Malbork.
- Their unlikely triumph has been attributed to the hearty feast ever since.
- In many Central and South-Eastern European cuisines, cabbage rolls are a mainstay. Romania, Bulgaria, Ukraine, Greece, Turkey, and Hungary have similar recipes.
