The Best Places to Visit in Poznan
Old Market Square
- The central plaza was designed in 1253 when Pozna was granted town rights under the Holy Roman Magdeburg Law.
- It's almost square, and after losing 60% of its buildings in 1945, it was quickly rebuilt after the war.
- You'll find yourself returning because many pastel-painted tenement houses have restaurant and bar terraces on their ground floors.
- In the heart of the city, near to the grand Town Hall, is a series of 16th-century merchants' houses atop an arcade, and at number 17 is the merchants' guild crest.
- Keep an eye out for the medieval pillory and the fountains depicting Proserpina, Apollo, Neptune, and Mars as you walk around.
Poznan Town Hall
- The Old Market Square's crowning glory dates from 1550 to 1560 and is a late-Renaissance marvel.
- A lovely loggia with three tiers and paintings in the spandrels and friezes between arches can be found on the eastern facade.
- On either side of a gilded cartouche carrying the initials "SAR," which signify Poland's final monarch, Stanislaw August Poniatowski, are portraits of the Kings of the Jagiellonian Line.
- A carillon plays the customary bugle call at the top of the hour from 07:00 to 21:00.
- At midnight, a live trumpeter performs the fanfare, accompanied by two mechanical goats, Pozna's symbols, and head-butting each other 12 times.
- Since 1551, this pair of goats has been fighting.
Historical Museum of Poznań
- Since 1956, the interior of the Town Hall has been a museum, and it deserves its entry.
- The Grand Vestibule is the show's star, as it appears to have done in the middle of the 16th century.
- Rich stucco patterns surround paintings of heraldic animals and coats of arms in the coffered ceiling.
- Look for the 1575 mantel clock with the city's coat of arms and the 1651 drinking vessel representing the gallery's shoemakers' guild.
- A wonderful 18th-century Limoges crosier with enamel and gold plating is also on display.
- Finally, two globes, one of the sky and the other of the Earth, are displayed in the ceremonial Court Room on the first floor.

Poznan Off the Beaten Track
Ostrów Tumski (Cathedral Island)
- It is not an exaggeration to suggest that Poland was born on this small island between the forks of the Warta River.
- The island is currently a tranquil sanctuary of cobblestone pathways and squares surrounded by greenery and antique religious structures.
- This is a pleasant alternative to the tourist traps surrounding Market Square.
- One of the first things you will notice is the quantity of vegetation, which runs from the high Medieval riverbank embankments to the countless fruit trees, which are especially beautiful in the spring.
- Not only did Catholicism take root here in the 10th century, but it was also the home of Mieszko I, Poland's first king and the cathedral's founder.
Poznań Cathedral
- The Battle of Pozna severely damaged Poland's oldest cathedral, which now has a Late Gothic design based on Medieval plans.
- This diminishes the mastery of the nave's star vaults or the chancel's groin vaults.
- Among the treasures conserved are Flemish tapestries from the 1600s, choir seats from the 1500s, and a Late Gothic altarpiece depicting Mary and the Passion from 1512.
- It is worthwhile to view the numerous Gothic and Renaissance funerary monuments from the 14th and 15th centuries, some of which were plundered by the German troops but afterwards recovered.
Brahma Poznania ICHOT
- This interpretation centre, which focuses on the history of Ostrów Tumski, is located near the Cybina River in the city's historic district.
- Brahma Poznania is unique in that there isn't a single artefact on display; instead, all exhibits are multimedia.
- Along with the preserved remnants of Prussian-era fortifications, the centre has an ultramodern building that opened in 2014.
- As you approach the structure from the riverfront footbridge, you will note that it has been constructed to highlight the cathedral in the left backdrop.
- The interactive audiovisual displays at the centre detail the origins of Poland's first cathedral, everyday life and culture in Pozna at the time, and Mieszko I's castle.

- There are many different types of sernik today, some baked and some unbaked, but they are all made on a crumbly cake layer.
- Sernik is frequently flavoured with raisins, chocolate sauce, or fruits, and one of the most popular dessert varieties has a sponge cake base with jelly and fruit on top.

- Pierogi can be sweet, savoury, or spicy, with cheese, onions, ground meat, mushrooms, potatoes, and sauerkraut as the most common fillings.
- Various berries, such as strawberries or blueberries, are commonly used in sweet versions.

- According to legend, croissants originated during the 1683 siege of Vienna, when king Jan Sobieski and Poland's hussars defeated the Turks in a battle, and bakers began to make croissants to commemorate the victory, with the Turkish crescent contributing to the shape of the final product.

- Originally the Huggerów Brewery, the building produced beer until 1980, then mineral water until 1998, when it was purchased by the Fortis Group and transformed into the shopping and entertainment Mecca it is today, thanks to a USD 66 million investment.
