The Best Places to Visit in Bergen
colourful Bryggen
- Bergen's ancient Hanseatic wharf is postcard-worthy.
- The Hanseatic League established a presence there, eventually gaining control of Bryggen and overseeing the stockfish trade.
- Despite being destroyed by fires throughout the centuries, Bryggen's lovely wooden structures have been rebuilt using the same structural design and construction techniques as they were after the great fire of 1702.
- Today, the tiny passageways between the slim, distinctive buildings hide a world of textile and craft companies, artists' galleries, and jewellers' studios, all waiting to be discovered
the Hanseatic Museum
- A visit to the Hanseatic Museum is required to understand life in Bryggen better when it was one of Europe's most important commercial centres.
- You'll learn how the guild of German commerce merchants lived in unmarried celibacy for the duration of their stay in the area and more about the devastating fire of 1702.
- Tip: Bergen is known for its high annual rainfall, so if you find yourself in town during one of the city's 239 rainy days, a museum visit or two is the best option.
- Check out our other suggestions for things to do in Bergen on a wet day.
Grieg at Troldhaugen
- Troldhaugen, often known as the Grieg Museum, is another museum not to be missed while visiting Bergen.
- Here, Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg and his wife Nina lived for the last 22 years.
- Their lovely home is now a museum, with artefacts such as Grieg's Steinway piano on display.
- Grieg's composer's hut, his grave, and a performance hall with an outstanding grass roof are visible in the garden.

- Nonetheless, it's tastiest when made using fresh herring from the sea, which means in the winter and for a limited time in the summer.
- Today, the Bokling is almost always sold without the head, tail, or bones so that you can eat it straight from the package.

- A small amount of sour cream and a slice of wholemeal bread or boiled potato goes a long way

- If you carry a fishing rod to the mountains, you have a high chance of catching your food.
