City Hall and Market Square

Saint Servatius

The Caves of Maastricht

Maastricht Off the Beaten Track
The Basilica of Our Lady
- Only a section of the original Basilica of Our Lady (Basiliek van Onze-Lieve-Vrouw) survives, which was established around AD 1000.
- The crypts and transepts were erected around 1150, while the east choir and gallery over the ambulatory were built in the early 1200s.
- With its two stair turrets, the Romanesque west front's fortress-like aspect harkens back to the church's historical role as part of the town's fortifications.
- The Late Gothic choir, with its spacious crypt and the side chapel with a 15th-century figure of Our Lady Star of the Sea, are beautiful.
Bonnefanten Museum
- The spectacular Bonnefanten Museum, located on the banks of the Maas River in an ultra-modern tower that resembles a 1950s version of a rocket ship houses Maastricht's most important art collections.
- With its massive conical tower, this stately edifice is named after the museum's former convent home – it was known as the Bonnefanten for its well-behaved children, the "bons enfants" – and houses numerous paintings from the Dutch Masters, as well as many Italian and modern works.
- The museum also has extensive mediaeval art collections, including wooden sculptures from the 13th through 16th centuries.
