Best Months to Visit Skopje
- Skopje is open all year, but June-July is the best time because of the great weather, low travel costs, and the absence of high holiday seasons.
- August is the hottest month in Skopje, with average temperatures of roughly 30°C (86°F); however, temperatures can reach as high as 32°C (90°F) on the hottest summer days.
- The temperature can drop to -9°C (16°F) in the winter, especially around January.
- The days in Skopje are the longest in August, so if you want to explore the sights during the day when the sun is up for the longest, visit during that month.

The Best Places to Visit in Skopje
The Memorial House
- This unique church was created in 2009 as a tribute to the Nobel Prize-winning Catholic nun born in Skopje in 1910.
- It was built on the foundations of an ancient church where Mother Teresa was baptised the day after her birth.
- It has a permanent exhibition about the saint's early life while Skopje was still under the Ottoman Empire.
- View Catholic services in a glass-walled chapel on the second floor, or peruse the subterranean multimedia centre's temporary displays.
The Museum of the Macedonian Struggle
- This ominous museum is dedicated to the country's occupation and independence struggle history.
- The narrative is chronological, beginning with the 16th-century revolt of Macedonian Christians against Ottoman overlords and ending with the country's 1991 proclamation of independence from Yugoslavia.
- Consider the disturbing wax models and oil paintings showing executions, battles, and massacres.
- Individually, you can visit with a professional guide or audio guide.
Mount Vodno
- Mount Vodno, at 1,066 metres (3,497 feet), is located southwest of Skopje and is crowned with the 66-meter (217-foot) Millenium Cross, one of the world's most enormous crucifixes.
- The most direct hiking paths to the peak from the city centre are approximately 6.5 kilometres (4 miles) long and take a few hours to complete.
- You can also take the Millenium Cross bus to the cable car terminal and then glide the rest of the way.
- Relax with a cup of coffee at the summit's little cafe and take in the view.

The Kale Fortress
- The broad, muscular Kale Fortress, which overlooks the Vardar River, is the highest point in Skopje.
- It was built during Byzantine Emperor Justinian I (527-565 CE) and expanded in the 10th and 11th centuries.
- In the late 2000s, the site was excavated, yielding notable artefacts such as woodwind instruments and clay decorations dating from around 3,000 BCE, underground houses, and the most incredible collection of Byzantine coins ever discovered in Macedonia.
- From the city centre, Kale is a quick walk away.
The neoclassical city centre
- The government gave Skopje a neoclassical makeover in 2014, erecting hundreds of states and renovating critical structures.
- While the project's expense and timeline caused controversy, the results are fascinating to watch. Begin in Macedonia Square, where you'll see a monument to Alexander the Great that stands 22 metres (72 feet) tall.
- Take the Art Bridge across the Vardar River to see the 29 monuments of Macedonian artists and musicians.
- Once on this side of the river, marvel at the Museum of Archaeology's Greek revival architecture and the newly built National Theatre, a copy of the original theatre destroyed in the 1963 earthquake.

CULTURE & TRADITIONS
Skopje Culture and Traditions
- A city that is both diverse and incredibly entertaining, offering visitors a place where culture, tradition, and modernity collide in a beautiful, unforgettable blend.
- The dynamic urban life, cultural legacy, a tradition passed down in a very appealing manner, the blend of old and new, urbanisation and nature are all enticing.
- Skopje is conspicuously absent from the map, which is dotted with all the prominent cities on the top lists of European capitals.
- This misconception is quickly changing, as many travellers have seen a city that is so diverse and incredibly entertaining, bringing visitors and residents alike a destination where culture, tradition, and modern collide in a seamless, unforgettable combination.
- If ever there was a time when Macedonia was all rolled into one, this is it.
- The city has its distinct rhythm, and visitors can perceive the flow of the culture that this capital produces once they arrive.
- Veteran travellers usually always enjoy a collective laugh at the expense of all the foreigners who never decided to visit this beautiful city.

Sarma
#Food
- Sarma is a traditional Balkan dish prepared during the holidays, and there are many of them in January!
- Macedonians are Orthodox Christians who observe Christmas on January 7th.
- We also have several religious holidays that bring the family together for dinner during this month.
- One of the top three foods served is sarma.
- Many families store cabbage in barrels for the frigid winters, and sarma is formed of cabbage rolls filled with minced meat, paprika, onion, and chopped vegetables.
Ruska Salata
#Food
- One of the most popular Balkan dishes is Ruska Salata (although it originates from Russia, called Olivye salad there).
- Chicken or grouse, potatoes, cucumber, lettuce, aspic, capers, olives, and mayonnaise.
- Ruska Salata is undoubtedly the favourite dish of anyone here who was born in the 1970s or 1980s.
- It reminds me of family holidays and days when everyone got together for lunch with relatives.
Burek
#Food
- In Mach, spring is just around the verge, and everyone is looking forward to those delicious vegetables and fruits.
- In the meantime, burek has come to the rescue! Burek is an excellent lunch for carbohydrate-deficient people since it contains far more carbs than you can tolerate.
- Burek is a delectable dessert found on almost every street corner in almost every Balkan city, including Skopje.
- If burek's carbs weren't enough, "simit" is the remedy; it's a sandwich made of two slices of bread with a pastry inside - "double carbs" for you.
- If you've ever wondered why Balkan people are so energetic, here's your solution!
Skopje City Mall
#Fashion
- Many consider this the country's first contemporary retail centre, with familiar high street names, a major supermarket, food court, underground parking, movie, and bowling.
- Skopje City Mall, which is currently celebrating its fifth anniversary, offers a wide choice of activities for the entire family and numerous regular discounts in addition to its vast number of shops and services.
Vero Center
#Fashion
- This enormous western-style mall is located just east of the city centre and was the first retail centre erected by the Veropoulos group, which owns and maintains the Macedonian network of Vero supermarkets.
- The ground floor houses one of the country's largest supermarkets, while the upper floors are home to about 50 speciality shops, including numerous foreign chains and brands.
- A food court and a movie are located upstairs.
GTC
#Fashion
- This Yugoslavian-era concrete masterpiece, designed by famed Macedonian architect ivko Popovski (1934-2007) and reportedly resembling a boat, is crowded with businesses and cafés and is also a favourite spot for local buskers to play.
- A couple of recommended small businesses offering CDs of local music are located beside various clothing stores, supermarkets, and companies selling mobile phone accessories.
- Because it's open plan and has bars and restaurants, there are no opening hours, though most shops are open from 9:00 a.m. to 20:00.
Skopje Zoo and Amusement Park
#Fun
- If you walk northeast of the museum, you'll come to the Skopje Zoo. This is a rare opportunity to witness natural history and live wildlife nearby.
- The zoo used to have a bad reputation for the state of its enclosures, but it has just undergone a major restoration to bring it up to modern standards.
- The zoo today has over 500 animal species on display, with plans to add more exotic creatures in the future.
- Visitors can participate in activities, such as purchasing healthy, environmentally friendly items to feed various animals.
- It's an open and welcome tribute to Skopje's city-wide developments over the last few years.
- A tiny amusement park, known as Luna Park, is located next to the zoo.
- Although there are plans to build a more modern amusement park at the same place as Luna Park, it is still worth visiting.
- These, on the other hand, can be enjoyed by anyone.
- Don't forget to ride on the Ferris wheel, which provides fantastic views over the river Vardar on the eastern side.
- So what better way to round up our journey than visiting an amusement park? Thank you for joining us, and we hope you enjoyed your stroll through Skopje.

Skopje Must-Attend Festivals and Events
- The Manaki Brothers Film Festival is the oldest globally, honouring cinematographers from all around the world.
- Janaki and Milton Manaki, Macedonian brothers who pioneered 20th-century filmmaking in the Balkans with their documentaries and photographic art, some of which were made as early as 1904, were the inspiration for this spectacular event in 1979.
- The festival celebrates all things film and strives to exhibit the creative works of cinematographers, both young and old, local and international, by premiering films from various genres, from short films to animation.
- This festival, which takes place once a year in July in the postcard-perfect mountain village of Galinik in Northwestern Macedonia, is a blend of tradition, local customs, and legacy.
- The festival's origins can be found in that Galinik had just 5,000 residents at the turn of the twentieth century, with its distant position and lack of industry pushing many of its younger residents to migrate to larger towns to pursue work.
- As a result, it was decided that those who had left the village would return every year on the Saturday closest to St. Peter's Day.
- Many engaged couples prefer to marry on this day to spend their wedding day with family and friends before moving into their new residences.
- On some occasions, nearly 40 couples were married on the same day.
