A Sneak Peek into Trapani

destination - Seasons to travel
  • Trapani, on the northwest coast of Sicily, is a hidden gem worth exploring.
  • This bustling port town is steeped in Sicilian culture and history.
  • This town may not be the most beautiful in Sicily, but it is an excellent starting point for some of the island's best day trips!
  • Trapani is a lively and historic port set on a promontory at the foot of Monte Erice in northwest Sicily.
  • It was turned into a naval port by the Carthaginians at the start of the First Punic War in 260 BC, but it was quickly taken over by the Romans, who kept it in obscurity until the 9th century AD, when it flourished again under the Saracene.
  • The Normans, as well as the Aragonese in the 15th century, when the great salt fields were laid out, prospered in trade and commerce.
  • Trapani's new town to the east, in contrast to the narrow streets of the old town, is one of wide public spaces.
  • The adjacent tree-shaded park of the Villa Margherita, where the Luglio Trapanese musical festival is held each July, is visible from Piazza Vittorio Emanuele.

  • Capital: Trapani Province
  • International Airport: Trapani–Birgi Airport (TPS)
  • Population: 70,000
  • Currency: Euro
  • Time:     GMT +1

  • The Museum of Illusions questions whether you can trust what you see by challenging the notion that seeing is believing.
  • Follow Corso Italia west to Via Elisabetta and the former Franciscan church of Santa Maria del Gesù, which was built in the late medieval style after 1528.
  • Palazzo Cavarretta has been altered several times since its construction, but it has kept its stunning façade, which serves as a dramatic conclusion to Corso Vittorio Emanuele.

Saline di Trapani e Paceco (Saltworks)

  • Giant salt fields stand in front of Trapani's town gates, along with the windmills that have become a symbol of this part of Sicily's coast.
  • The Aragonese, who laid out the salt fields that would become Trapani's main industry for centuries, began producing salt in the 15th century.
  • To keep the salt from blowing away and to keep it dry, the white heaps of salt are covered with tiles.
  • Although salt production is no longer as large as it was in the 16th to early 20th centuries, the fields and windmills are a photographer's dream, especially when their sails are silhouetted against an orange sunset.
  • With old tools and signage that bring the fields to life, a museum explains how they work.
destination - Seasons to travel

Old Town & Harbor

  • The Old Town of Trapani is located to the west of Piazza Umberto and the train station, and begins where Via XXX Gennaio runs from north to south, filling the narrow peninsula; Corso Italia and Corso Vittorio Emanuele run east to west.
  • The Arab Quarter, which stretched between Via XXX Gennaio and Via Torre Arsa during Saracen rule, was the widest part of the peninsula between Via XXX Gennaio and Via Torre Arsa in the 9th century, and was home to both Arabs and Jews.
  • There are plenty of small shops and restaurants to be found in the Old Town's lively and atmospheric lanes and alleys.
  • Walking through Trapani's Old Town, you'll catch a glimpse of the blue sea that surrounds the peninsula to the north and south every now and then.
  • The harbor and Piazza Garibaldi, with its shipping offices and departure wharves for ships and hydrofoils bound for the Egadi Islands, are located to the south, as is Viale Regina Elena, which offers views of the saltworks and the Egadi Islands.
destination - Seasons to travel

Ligny Tower & La Colombaia

  • The low, square Torre di Ligny stands at the end of the pier on the town's far western tip.
  • Under the viceroy Prince of Ligny, this 14th-century defensive tower was extended in the 16th century and finally completed in 1670.
  • It was armed and used as a naval anti-aircraft post during WWII.
  • It now houses the Museum of Prehistory, which includes a marine archaeological exhibition hall and prehistoric artifacts from the Mangiapane caves.
  • The walk along the point is well worth it for the views of the Sicilian Channel and the Tyrrhenian Sea, and it is the best place in Trapani to watch the sunset.
  • The island of La Colombaia, off the southern side of the harbor entrance, is home to the fortifications and the octagonal Torre Colombaia, also known as the Castello di Mare.
  • It served as a fortress and then a prison in the fifteenth century.
destination - Seasons to travel

Museo Regionale Pepoli

  • The secularized Carmelite abbey adjacent to the Santuario di Maria SS di Trapani has a beautiful cloister dating from 1650 and a wide stairwell dating from 1639.
  • On the ground floor, the Museo Regionale Pepoli displays medieval architectural fragments and sculptures, including a 1522 Antonello Gagini statue of San Giacomo.
  • The Pinacotheca, which includes works by Titian, Paolo Veronese, Ribera, and Serpotta, is accessed via a wide staircase on the upper floor.
  • Other galleries feature archaeological artifacts and handcrafted items, such as coral jewelry.
destination - Seasons to travel

Cattedrale di San Lorenzo

  • San Lorenzo's church, which did not become a cathedral until 1844, was built in 1421 and restructured in 1635 as a triple-aisled basilica, which was redesigned and extended in 1740 by Giovan Biagio Amico.
  • You'll hear Amico's name mentioned again because he's in charge of a number of Trapani's churches.
  • He added the portico and the dome, which is flanked by four towers, as well as the side chapels and choir.
  • The Neoclassical stucco work, as well as Vincenzo Manno's frescoes, were completed at this time.
  • A sculpture of the Dead Christ in local stone by Giacomo Tartaglia, the Eternal Father by Domenico La Bruna, and San Giorgio by Andrea Carreca are among the works in the cathedral, but the undisputed treasure is a painting of the Crucifixion attributed to Flemish painter Van Dyke.

Palermo

  • Despite Sicily's fearsome reputation in Hollywood, Palermo was found to have the lowest crime rate of the twelve largest cities in Italy in a recent study.
  • However, opportunistic theft can happen in any city at any time, so be wary of flaunting expensive equipment, wads of cash, and unsecured valuables.
  • Women may be subjected to wolf whistles and catcalls, but this isn't something to be concerned about during the day. It is not advisable for anyone to walk alone at night.
  • There are several ways to get around Palermo: buses are inexpensive but unreliable, so avoid them if you're on a tight schedule.
  • Officially, the bus system operates from 5.30 a.m. to 11.30 p.m., but after 10.30 p.m., there are frequently no buses!
  • Bus tickets are inexpensive, but don't try to save money by skipping the fare; they are closely monitored, and fines for incorrect tickets can be costly.
destination - Seasons to travel

Catania

  • Catania, after Palermo, is the second largest Sicilian city, located on the island's east coast and in the shadow of the island's famous volcano.
  • The crime rate is moderate, with pickpocketing becoming more common in crowded areas and on public transportation, and muggings becoming more common.
  • However, travelling in a group, avoiding the streets after dark, and not displaying valuables while out and about can all significantly reduce your risks.
  • Catania's minor crime problem is a new one – the city's burgeoning tourist industry has attracted a criminal element looking for a quick buck!
destination - Seasons to travel

Cefalu

  • If the name of this Sicilian city sounds Greek to you, it's because it is!
  • The Greeks settled the headland around 400BC, and their name for the settlement has survived the centuries.
  • Cefalu, located just under 40 miles from Palermo, appears to be from another era – a more tranquil and laid-back era in which the days pass slowly and with pleasure.
  • The cathedral is the focal point of the central square, which is the place to be seen.
  • Tourists are discovering the beauty of the ancient fishing town's coastline and pristine sandy beaches, and it is growing in popularity.
  • Cefalu is a very safe and family-friendly town, making it ideal for a relaxing family holiday as well as singles and couples.
  • The crime rate is extremely low, and there is no culture of drinking or other high-risk behaviors that could lead to harm.

  • Sicilian history is a reflection of the many nations that have inhabited the island and shaped its culture over the centuries.
  • Without the Greeks, Romans, Arabs, Normans, Phoenicians, and Spaniards, Sicily as we know it today would not exist.
  • The Island and its traditions are a celebration of this diversity, a cultural richness in which the locals take great pride!
  • Explore the key historical spots, local museums, and archaeological sites from the Elymians, Sicanians, and Sicels until the Independent Kingdom of the Two Sicilies in Erice, Segesta, Mozia, Selinunte, Trapani, Marsala, Palermo, or Agrigento.

Marsala

#FOOD

  • This fortified Sicilian wine was discovered by an Englishman named John Woodhouse, who began producing it on a larger scale in 1796.
  • The quality of Marsala wines began to deteriorate as a result of its instant popularity, but stricter production regulations were implemented in 1984, which eventually resulted in better quality Marsala.
  • The wine's distinct flavor is due to the traditional winemaking method and the use of only Sicilian indigenous grapes, primarily Grillo, but also Inzolia, Catarrato, and Damaschino.
  • The wine is available in three different styles: secco (dry), semisecco (semi-dry), and dolce (sweet), with flavors of cherries, apples, dried fruits, soft vanilla, honey, and licorice.

Genovesi

#FOOD

  • Genovesi are Sicilian pastries filled with either a milky custard cream or ricotta cream.
  • The Erice village produces the most popular variety of these delectable treats.
  • Wheat flour, sugar, butter, and egg yolks are commonly used in the dough, while grated lemon zest is frequently used in the filling.
  • Genovesi are typically dusted with icing sugar and served warm.

Cassatelle

#FOOD

  • Cassatelle, also known as casateddi, are deep-fried Italian pastries with a sweet filling sandwiched between two thin layers of dough enriched with white wine or Marsala.
  • Cassatelle, also known as the sweet version of ravioli pasta, originated in the Sicilian province of Trapani, where they are still served with a lemon-flavored filling made of ricotta cheese and chocolate drops.
  • Aside from the traditional version, various variations of this classic treat can be found all over Sicily.
  • Cassatelle Agira, with a cocoa-and-almond filling, is one of the most popular, and different varieties are made with pumpkin, figs, or chickpeas.

FASHION

#FASHION

  • Trapani is not the largest city on the island of Sicily.
  • As a result, if you want to buy high-quality clothing and shoes from world-renowned brands, you should spend a few days in Palermo or schedule a trip to continental Italy.
  • Of course, there are shops selling goods from well-known brands as well as local fashion designers such as Giovanni Campo Abbigliamento Uomo.
  • However, the selection of branded cosmetics, perfumes, and wardrobe items in Trapani is limited. However, a variety of shops sell souvenirs and Sicilian delicacies.
  • You could try to buy some fish or seafood and have it prepared at a nearby restaurant according to your preferences.
  • For this, you should go to Trapani's small Mercato del Pesce market.
  • This location is vibrant. It is not a popular tourist attraction.
  • The majority of the goods sold here are purchased by the locals.
  • So you can come to the market just to stare and feel the atmosphere of Trapani as a centuries-old coastal fishing town.
  • Do you want to buy a cheap but enjoyable and delectable souvenir? Pay attention to the sweets available in the area.
  • Da Peppino-Re Delle Caramelle sells traditional macarons, candied fruits, Torrone (nougat with nuts and fruit), pistachio cream, regular chocolate bars, and more.
  • You should also purchase some marzipan fruit while you're here. Frutta Martorana is the name given to them.
  • These are fruits made with such care from marzipan that it's difficult to tell them apart from real ones.

FUN

#FUN

  • Apart from the ocean, Sicily offers a variety of other water activities. Around the island, there are some fantastic water parks.
  • Etnaland Water Park: This park, located in Catania, is not only a water park, but also a dinosaur-themed one!
  • Aside from rides, the park features a cableway and laser shows.
  • Monreale Water Park is Sicily's largest, with thrilling slides, a lagoon, and excellent restaurants and bars.
  • This water park in Palermo is a fantastic way to cool off during the hot summer months.
  • If you're travelling with children, another option is to take them to an adventure park where they can climb rope courses or scale trees.
  • The Madonie adventure park in Sicily, which is located in the beautiful Madonie mountain range, is the best.
  • The park is a great place for kids to burn off some energy while also getting an educational tour of some of the area's working farms.
  • The local cuisine, which is known for its meats, cheeses, and, most importantly, wine, will delight the parents!

  • The majority of the saline reserve is privately owned, as it is still used to extract salt using traditional methods.
  • The numerous mills used for pomping the water in the basins and grinding the salt have undoubtedly had an impact on the landscape.
  • The Salines are among the last in Sicily, and they are made up of tanks of various shapes and depths where, in the summer, water evaporates quickly and salt crystallizes thanks to a game of levels, channels, and tunnels.
  • Mills and tanks, particularly at sunset, create a lovely scene as the landscape takes on different colors as it reflects on the salines.
  • The ancient mills are among Europe's top ten most beautiful structures.
  • Thousands of tourists have come to see the ancient industrial architecture.
  • There are two types of mills: one that is star-shaped and has six wooden paddles, and the other that is called "American" and has metal paddles.
  • It's also one of Sicily's wettest spots, with many bird species migrating through.
  • Salines provide a one-of-a-kind habitat for birds and plants.
  • They are an important stopover for many birds during their spring and autumn migrations, with 208 species including flamingos, herons, and hawks.
  • The months of February and May, as well as September and November, are the best times to watch it.
  • During the summer, it is possible to visit only a few areas in order to cause the least amount of disturbance to the birds.
  • Many plants, such as halophilus plants, can also be found in the area.
