A Sneak Peek into Parma
- The stately palaces and elegant squares in Parma's centre speak more of its later role as the seat of the powerful Farnese dukes and its French inheritance under Napoleon's wife, Marie Louise than of its early days as a Roman colony along the old Roman main road, the Via Aemilia.
- Parma is well known for its famous cheese, Parmigiano Reggiano.
- One of the most popular things to do here is visiting a dairy and witnessing skilled cheesemakers turn milk into Parmigiano Reggiano.
- Antonio Allegri, sometimes known as Correggio, was a 15th-century painter who lived and worked in Parma, and his art can still be seen in the city's churches and museums.
- Opera composer Giuseppe Verdi, born in the nearby village of Roncole in 1813, and conductor Arturo Toscanini, born in Parma in 1867, are two other native sons honoured here.
- The Piazza Garibaldi, where the 18th-century façade of the Palazzo del Governatore exhibits an exquisite astronomical clock, is a fantastic place to start exploring Parma.
- Before starting a tour, grab a seat at the café that spans one end of the square and take in the local scene while sipping a cappuccino.

The Best Places to Visit in Parma
Duomo (Cathedral)
- The cathedral, a Romanesque basilica dating from the 12th century, occupies an entire side of the Piazza del Duomo. Its broad front forms a stunning ensemble with the church's 63-meter campanile and the tall octagonal Baptistery slightly to its left.
- Look up to see a massive fresco of the Virgin's Assumption painted inside the dome by Correggio, the most influential artist of the Parma School during the Italian Renaissance.
- More Renaissance art may be found in the side chapels, and don't miss the crypt's stunning pillars and early Christian floor mosaics.
Baptistery
- The vast octagonal marble Baptistery was begun in the Romanesque style by Benedetto Antelami.
- It took almost a century for the building to be completed in Gothic style.
- It is one of Italy's outstanding instances of the transition between these two highly different forms.
- Inside, there are other 13th-century reliefs and beautiful frescoes.
- Even people who aren't usually fans of religious art must acknowledge that this structure is magnificent.
Teatro Farnese (Farnese Theater)
- The palace theatre was created entirely out of wood by a pupil of the great Italian architect Andrea Palladio inside the massive Palazzo della Pilotta.
- With 4,500 seats erected in 1618-28, it was the world's largest theatre. It is thought to be the world's first permanent proscenium arch theatre.
- It was nearly devastated by World War II bombing but was repaired and reopened in 1962 in its full glory.
- Unpainted wood lines the entire theatre, it's surface unadorned by the gilding and stucco work found in so many famous opera houses, and it is beautiful in its pure simplicity.

- There are also Sunday concerts in addition to the opera.
- The wardrobe laboratory, set-painting lab, orchestra rehearsal room, dressing rooms, and the stage are all included in the 90-minute backstage tours, which are ordinarily closed to the public.
Palazzo della Pilotta and National Gallery

- The courtyard was formerly utilised as a ball court because it is so large.

- Important works by Correggio (Madonna del San Girolamo and Madonna della Scodella), Parmigianino, Fra Angelico, Cima da Conegliano, Tiepolo, Canaletto, Carracci, and El Greco, as well as a design by Leonardo da Vinci, can be found in the Galleria Nazionale.
- This is a fantastic low-key spot to see the work of a broad spectrum of Italian painters without having to spend the entire day there.

Parma Culture and Traditions
- The cultural diversity of the lovely Italian Peninsula never ceases to astound visitors from all over the world.
- However, since the pandemic, the opportunity to learn about the traditions and characteristics of many Italian gems has been dramatically limited.
- Parma, a delicate city in the heart of Italy, is one of these jewels.
- Beyond being the birthplace of classic foods like Parmigiano-Reggiano and Prosciutto, Parma is a city rich in the cultural legacy named "Italian Capital of Culture for the Year 2020" but had to postpone a year's worth of festivities owing to the epidemic.

Parma: Food, Fun & Fashion Guide
Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
#Food
- Eight hundred years ago, artisans discovered how to create this extraordinary cheese, and every generation since has been clever enough not to mess with perfection.
- Only three components are used: milk from cows reared on local grass in a specific area, salt, and calf rennet (a natural bovine enzyme that helps curds form).
- The milk must be very fresh, and it is matured on wooden shelves after being curdled and fashioned into wheels.
- The result is a rich, fruity, and nutty flavour, far beyond the flat saltiness of mass-produced, pre-grated parmesan cheese.
- If Parmigiano-Reggiano is served as a stand-alone appetiser, don't pass it up, especially if it's drizzled with barrel-aged Modena balsamic vinegar.
Prosciutto di Parma
#Food
- The sweetness and suppleness of the locally cured hams, according to locals, are due to the winds that float up from Tuscany, softening as they pass through olive and pine groves in river valleys, drying in the high mountains, and absorbing the scent of chestnut forests before reaching in Parma.
- Perhaps this is why this region's cured ham has been renowned since Roman times.
- Prosciutto di Parma is typically served as an antipasto with melon slivers or grissini, thin breadsticks.
Cultatello di Zibello
#Food
- Cultatello di Zibello is perhaps a more delectable cured ham than prosciutto di Parma, despite being less well-known and given the unappealing epithet "Little Ass."
- It comes from the nearby town of Zibello, where the sweetness and smell are claimed to be enhanced by the chilly winters and thick fog rolling off the Po River.
La Galleria (ex Barilla center)
#Fashion
- The renovation of an industrial area where Mr Barilla established his first pasta production in 1910 resulted in the creation of the Barilla Center.
- This urban improvement plan, sponsored by the Barilla family and the Municipality of Parma, was created by renowned architect Renzo Piano.
- Apart from the La Feltrinelli shop and the well-known Swedish retailer H&M, there is also a pub pizzeria, a Japanese restaurant, an Eataly hamburger restaurant, a pizza, and a food store.
