A Sneak Peek into Milan Bergamo

destination - Seasons to travel
  • The topography of Bergamo is the first thing a visitor notices, with a perfectly flat lower town that rises steeply and abruptly to the 16th-century bastions of the old town on the crest of its hill.
  • The contrast is even more stark because the new town's narrow lanes wind haphazardly among Romanesque and Renaissance structures, while the old town's straight lower streets are lined with Neoclassical and modern buildings.
  • The majority of the tourist attractions are located in the old upper city, known as Citta Alta.
  • A funicular connects the two parts of Bergamo, making access to the old citadel much easier than the steep, winding roads at either end.
  • The monumental gates through which these roads enter the old city, on the other hand, are well worth seeing.
  • Two of them depict St. Mark's Lion, a reminder that Bergamo, like much of northern Italy, was once a part of the Venetian Republic.

Citta Alta

  • The Citta Alta, or old town, has most of the top things to do in Bergamo, with its medieval and Renaissance buildings tightly clustered at the top of a rock outcrop.
  • The funicular, which takes you to Piazza Mercato delle Scarpe, is the best way to get there.
  • This small square leads to the Via Gombito, a narrow stone-paved street where the Torre di Gombito, a patrician tower-house built around 1100, can be found.
  • The beautiful churches of San Michele al Pozzo Bianco and Sant'Andrea are located below on Via di Porta Dipinta (inside the latter is a Madonna Enthroned with Saints by Moretto).
  • Via Gombito, lined by patrician buildings with small shops on the street level, leads to the lovely Piazza Vecchia.
destination - Seasons to travel

Piazza Vecchia

  • This square in the heart of the old town is framed by a remarkable and beautiful collection of patrician houses and the Palazzo della Ragione (city hall).
  • The stone staircase and loggia of three Gothic arches (largely rebuilt in the mid-1500s) of the 12th-century Palazzo della Ragione form the piazza's upper side, adjacent to the tall tower, Torre del Comune.
  • The late-Renaissance Palazzo Nuovo, which houses the municipal library, borders the lower side.
  • The Contarini Fountain, which is surrounded by lions, stands in the center, and another Lion of St. Mark watches from above.
  • A café in the upper corner is a good place to take in the scenery.
destination - Seasons to travel

Santa Maria Maggiore (Basilica of St. Mary Major)

  • Piazza del Duomo (cathedral square) is reached through the archway at the top of Piazza Vecchia, and the two together house some of Bergamo's most impressive architectural treasures.
  • The church of Santa Maria Maggiore, which was built as a Romanesque basilica in 1137, has an ornate choir and a stepped-back tower over the crossing.
  • Under beautiful Gothic canopies, lions guard the doorways on either side of the church (1353 and 1360).
  • On the walls of the side aisles and choir are fine Renaissance choir stalls, Baroque stucco work, and 16th-century tapestries.
  • Locals continue to leave fresh flowers on the tomb of composer Donizetti, who was born in Bergamo and is buried here.

Milan Bergamo Culture and Traditions

destination - Seasons to travel
  • Despite the fact that Bergamo is not located in the southern Mediterranean and thus has a more open culture, it maintains an Italian style and its people are warm and welcoming.
  • Bergamo was originally a Celt civilization, but thousands of years ago the Roman empire conquered the land and established the city's true culture.
  • Bergamo's strategic location as a crossroads for other parts of Europe made it vulnerable to invasions, and for a long time, the city had to be walled off; entry to Bergamo was only permitted through a gate and after payment of a customs tax.
  • The residents were proud of this and developed a strong sense of camaraderie within their walls as a result.
  • For a long time, Venice ruled the city, and its culture seeped through the cracks in the walls.
  • The Carnavale party, which is world-famous in Venice but also a major event in Bergamo, is one of the best examples of this today.
  • In Italy, gastronomy is very important. Bergamo has a plethora of fantastic restaurants and bars that serve as social gathering spots for the city's residents, and life is never rushed in these establishments.
  • The time spent eating is set aside for peace and relaxation. You may notice slower service here, but that does not necessarily imply poor service!

Stracciatella

#FOOD

  • Stracciatella is a type of Italian gelato (ice cream) made with milk, cream, and sugar, and chocolate bits swirled throughout.
  • Enrico Panattoni created it in 1962 at the Ristorante La Marianna in Bergamo, when he decided to crack pieces of chocolate into the ice cream.
  • He was allegedly inspired by the same-named soup, which is made by cracking eggs into a broth, similar to how chocolate is cracked into gelato.
  • The smooth texture of stracciatella is distinguished by a slight crunch.
  • Its name comes from the Italian word stracciare, which means to tear or shred.
  • Stracciatella is now one of the most popular ice cream flavors on the planet.

Polenta

#FOOD

  • Polenta is a traditional Northern Italian dish made primarily from coarse corn flour cooked in water.
  • Although polenta is now known for its bright yellow color, it was originally made with spelt, rye, and buckwheat, which gave it a much darker hue.
  • Polenta was known as pulmentum in Roman times, and it was a staple of both peasants and Roman soldiers who were given grain as field rations.
  • Today, polenta is still made in Italy with a paiolo, a copper pot, and a tarello, a long wooden spoon.
  • The boiled polenta is poured onto a flat surface or into a pan and allowed to cool and harden before being cut into slices with a wooden knife or a cotton thread.
  • Polenta is also known for its versatility; it can be used to replace bread or pasta, served as a side dish with fish or meat, or grilled with tomatoes and mushrooms.
  • Despite its humble beginnings, polenta has steadily risen in popularity among gourmet audiences and high-end restaurants in recent years.

Polenta taragna

#FOOD

  • Polenta taragna is an elaborate polenta variation made with a mixture of yellow cornmeal and buckwheat flour, then enriched with butter and cheese just before serving.
  • The name is derived from the word tarai, which refers to the wooden tool used to stir the polenta that is traditionally cooked in a copper pot hung inside the fireplace.
  • The dark grayish color of polenta taragna is due to the use of buckwheat flour, and the rich creaminess of the cheese.
  • Local semi-fat, medium-ripened cow-milk cheeses such as Valtellina Casera, Bitto, Branzi, or Fontina are commonly used in the dish.
  • Polenta taragna can be served as a main course or as an accompaniment to cold cuts and Italian pickles.
  • Buckwheat production in Valtellina dates from the 1600s, so it's no surprise that it's used in a variety of traditional local dishes, including this one.
