A Sneak Peek into Lake Garda
- The largest lake in Italy, Lake Garda, is nestled between the Dolomites mountains.
- It's known for its turquoise water and stunning scenery.
- The lake is known for its strong winds, which make it ideal for sailing, windsurfing, and kitesurfing. When visiting Italy, you must include Lake Garda on your itinerary.
- Lake Garda, located north of Verona, is the most family-friendly and water-sports-oriented of Italy's lakes.
- It is also Italy's largest lake, stretching from the steep Alpine foothills to the Po Valley's northern edge.
- Beaches line the southern shore, which is backed by low hills, while mountains and sheer cliffs surround the lake in the north, particularly along the western shore.
- The lake's terrain offers a wide range of activities for sports enthusiasts, from sailing and windsurfing to mountain climbing, rappelling, and mountain biking, all with lake views.
- At the same time, Lake Garda's location provides a year-round temperate climate, allowing olives and lemons to grow far north of their normal range, as well as a turbulent history that has left several well-fortified castles, Roman ruins, and World War II-related sites.
- Long stretches of sandy beach, as well as a slew of towns with lakeside promenades and cafés surrounding postcard marinas whose sole purpose appears to be la dolce vita, ensure that Lake Garda has something for everyone.
- There are so many things to do here that you could easily spend a week here and not run out of things to do.
- The attractions listed below are organized geographically from the lake's southern end, up the east shore, and down the west shore.

Sirmione and Castello Scaligeri
- Sirmione is a charming little town at the end of a long promontory that juts out into the lake from the lake's southern shore.
- It's difficult to imagine a more charming way to enter a town than crossing a moat on a drawbridge and entering the forecourt of a castle that looks like it was built for a film set.
- The Scaligeri, Verona's ruling family, built the water-surrounded fortress in the 12th century as part of their defensive network against Milan, and it was later maintained by the Venetian empire.
- Climb the tower for panoramic views of the lake and town, and tour the restored interior.
- The Romans came here before the Scaligeri to bathe in the sulphur springs, which are now the foundation of a luxury spa.
- On weekends, Sirmione's posh boutiques and cafés will be packed with visitors.
Desenzano Del Garda
- If you're arriving by train or via the A4 Autostrada, Desenzano del Garda will most likely be your first stop.
- It's a lively little town just west of Sirmione, centered around a marina basin and piers from which lake steamers and hydrofoils depart for towns all over the lake.
- The castle that once crowned its hilltop has been demolished, but Villa Romana, a Roman villa with impressive mosaics, has been excavated near the old town center.
- A Tiepolo painting is in the parish church.
- Desenzano is a great base for exploring the lake, with plenty of cafés and restaurants and convenient boat connections.
- This is where you'll find the majority of the lake's best beaches.

- The history of the Sigurtà Garden Park dates back to 14 May 1407, when the patrician Gerolamo Nicol Contarini purchased the entire property, which was then used solely for agricultural purposes, during the Venetian dominion of Valeggio sul Mincio.
- It was actually a farm, or as the ancient documents put it, a "brolo encircled by walls," where a brolo was a wooded knoll with encircling walls, arable land, and livestock forage production.
- There was also another space within the brolo: a small formal garden adjacent to the main house, created for the noble family's leisure time.
- This garden served as the forerunner to what would become the Sigurtà Garden Park.
- The main dwelling house for the Contarini family and smaller buildings for those who worked the land were the distinguishing features of the structure.
