A Sneak Peek into Catania

destination - Seasons to travel
  • Catania, the second-largest city in Sicily after Palermo, is most famous for its Baroque buildings.
  • Catania, established by Ionian Greeks in 729 BC, thrived as an agricultural hub and continued to do so even after becoming a Roman colony.
  • Under the Norman administration, it recovered its prominence as a trade and nautical power after being eclipsed by Syracuse and Palermo in the Byzantine and Arab eras.
  • The town prospered during Spanish administration, and a university was established there in 1434.
  • However, the town suffered from several natural disasters: the plague in 1576; lava flowing in 1669; and the devastating earthquake of 1693, which left the remainder in ruins.
  • Catania has a rich history of Baroque structures that are the city's main tourist draws thanks to the 18th-century renovation, which was designed mainly by Giovanni Battista Vaccarini.
  • The views of Mount Etna from rooftop terraces and the end of Catania's main, promenade-like commercial area, Via Etnea, are both beautiful.
  • The summer of 2021 saw wildfires ravage Catania and other sections of Sicily, making headlines worldwide.
  • Beach regions to the south of the city's core were impacted, particularly the Le Capannine resort, which was nearly destroyed.
  • However, the beaches are again available, and the facilities were promptly reconstructed.

  • International Airport: Catania International Airport (CTA)

  • Summer: The summer season lasts from May through September. If you're considering going sightseeing, try avoiding October because it has the highest precipitation. Late spring results from this.

  • Late January through early February will be an excellent time to visit Catania if you're an active traveller who wants to partake in sports like skiing.
  • So, from November to March is the ideal time to visit Catania.

Basilica Cattedrale Sant'Agata

  • The cathedral of Sant'Agata was built between 1086 and 1090, not long after the Normans captured Catania, and is said to stand where Saint Agatha died as a martyr in 251.
  • The three-aisled cross-shaped basilica was built using relics from the Roman springs of Achilles and other antique structures.
  • Girolamo Palazzotto oversaw the rebuilding the nave following the earthquake in 1693, and Vaccarini finished construction on the façade in 1736.
  • A marble triptych by 16th-century artist Antonello Freri is displayed on the altar of the Cappella di Sant'Agata, which is hidden behind a wrought-iron gate in the right transept.
  • The ornately carved 16th-century choir stalls depict Saint Agatha's life, and more Aragonese monarchs of Sicily monuments may be found in the choir.
  • A modern-day depiction of Mount Etna's eruption in 1669, including the lava flow that reached Castello Ursino, can be found in the sacristy.

Piazza del Duomo & Fontana dell'Elefante

  • There are many attractive squares in Catania, but none is more gracious–or spacious–than Piazza del Duomo.
  • The city's heart, the cathedral square, still has the Baroque aesthetic that Giovanni Battista Vaccarini gave it in the first half of the 18th century.
  • The cathedral, modified in the Baroque style between 1730 and 1739, and the church honouring the city's patron saint, Sant'Agata, built between 1737 and 1767, are located on the east side of the elephant fountain.
  • The Porta Uzeda and the Palazzo del Municipio (1741), built by Vaccarini, are located in the northwest and south, respectively.
  • Inspired by Bernini's elephant obelisk in Rome, Vaccarini created the lovely Fontana dell'Elefante, which has an elephant made of black lava holding up a tiny Egyptian obelisk.
destination - Seasons to travel

Monastero dei Benedettini

  • The old monastery behind the church of San Nicol l'Arena, one of the largest Benedictine monasteries in Europe, was started in 1500 and its continuous building combined styles from many ages.
  • There are two magnificent inner courtyards, rusticated pillars, and sculptured window ornaments on the late Baroque façade.
  • The 16th-century vaults, the 18th-century cellars by Vaccarini, and both cloisters are available for tours.
  • The University of Catania's Department of Humanities is located in the monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Castello Ursino

  • A strong lava stone structure, Castello Ursino was constructed around 1239.
  • This defensive structure dates to the Hohenstaufen era in the High Middle Ages and shares many similarities with Frederick II's castle in Syracuse.
  • The ground plan consists of four wings that form a square with towers at the corners and four smaller towers midway along each side of an inner courtyard.
  • There are few decorative elements, although you may see an eagle capturing a rabbit on the entrance side to the north.
  • Before the massive torrent of lava that poured through it in 1669 and moved the coastline eastward, the castle had stood directly by the harbour.
  • The castle is currently in a sizable location in the heart of a neighbourhood.
destination - Seasons to travel

Palazzo Biscari

  • The Prince of Biscari, who ordered the structure's construction between 1707 and 1763, has left behind relatives who still own and reside in Palazzo Biscari.
  • You can't help but notice the elaborate window and door frames on the palace's façade, which is among the showiest in the city.
  • The palace was expanded by Ignazio Biscari, the grandson of the man who had initially ordered it, to make room for his substantial art collection, the most of which has since been bequeathed to the Museo Civico.
  • The lavish interior contains a Rococo dining hall with mirrors, stucco, frescoes, and a massive double staircase leading to the inner garden.
  • Paintings, marble flooring, further frescoes, intricate stucco work, a tiny museum housing the objects that were not donated to local museums, and more can be found elsewhere.
  • The reference to audio tours on the sign in front denotes that the palace is included in the city's audio tour; inquire with the tourist office to learn when tours of the inside are being conducted.

  • Under the pressure of the lava, one-third of the building was destroyed. However, all repair work was finished by the 19th century.
  • In the second century, this magnificent building was constructed. More than 15,000 spectators may fit into the theatre's roomy arena.
  • Mount Etna is regarded as the most significant natural feature in the area. The volcano draws tourists who enjoy trekking and ecotourism from all around the world.

Sicilia bedda

#Food

  • Sicily is a paradise on earth.
  • The area's moderate climate and volcanic soil have made it so fertile that the island appears to be overrun with the finest produce.
  • The scent of citrus fruits, whose orange and yellow colours complement and mimic the colour of the sun, accompanies you even in the dead of winter.
  • Even if all the poetry in the world wouldn't explain it adequately, it's difficult not to write poetically about this island.

In Sicilia si mangia bene

#Food

  • There are regional specialities in every Italian region, some of which are unique to that area.
  • However, Sicily's list of regional specialities is so lengthy that they almost seem to have created the term.
  • And they differ significantly from one community to the next.

Catania

#Food

  • After the capital, Palermo, Catania is the second-largest town in Sicily.
  • It's on the other side of the island, and it appears to be proudly turning its back on that city, gazing wistfully towards Greece, where most of the Eastern Sicilian cities had their start.
  • It is located between the sea and Mount Etna, one of the world's most active volcanoes, sometimes referred to as "a Muntagna" or "'u Mungibeddu" locally.

  • Many people only visit the Vittorio shoe store on Via Umberto I to purchase high-quality Italian footwear at such competitive pricing.
  • One of Catania's most well-known shopping districts, La Rinascente, is located on Via Pacini Street.

Monti Rossi Adventure Park

#Fun

  • The adventure park Monti Rossi Adventure Park is situated inside the Pineta Monti Rossi, Nicolosi, an extinct volcanic cone close to Catania.
