- The lakes of Kerry are an important part of the country's history and landscape, with plenty to see and do along their shores.
- Fishing, for example, is very popular here (be careful with licenses this website has a lot of information), and many of the large bodies of water have castles or picturesque grand houses on their shores.

The Best Places to Visit in Kerry
Skellig Islands
- It’s well worth veering off the N70 and heading for Portmagee after fringing Lough Currane and passing through Waterville.
- Visitors can take a boat trip to the Skellig Islands, one of which, Skellig Michael, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
- Around 23,000 pairs of gannets nest on the ledges of the smaller islands, forming the world's second largest gannet colony.
- A well-preserved 6th-century monastic settlement can be found on the summit of the 218-meter-high Skellig Michael.
- Visitors who climb the 670 steps to the summit are rewarded with panoramic views of the coast and surrounding Atlantic, as well as the opportunity to explore the unique monastic settlement with its otherworldly beehive-shaped huts.
Killarney
- Killarney, with its magnificent National Park, scenic lakes, and world-famous Jaunting Cars, is about 20 minutes by car from Killorglin.
- The magnificent Muckross House and Gardens, The Gap of Dunloe, Innisfallen Island, and numerous traditional live music venues are among the must-see sights.
- The beauty of Killarney's surroundings, which should be explored at leisure, is one of the city's main attractions.
- In 1861, Queen Victoria paid a visit to Muckross House and stayed there. She seemed to be enamored with the location, which is understandable.
- The traditional farms on the same property are a snapshot of life in rural Ireland 60 to 70 years ago.
- How quickly things have changed. Kenmare, the Ring of Kerry's starting and finishing point, is a 35-minute drive away.
Cahersiveen
- Cahersiveen, a small town just under 16 kilometers from Portmagee, has a magnificent old barracks and, somewhat surprisingly, a statue of Charlie Chaplin, who was once a frequent visitor.
- Ballycarbery Castle, which stands across the broad Valentia River from Cahersiveen, is in ruins.
- Two good stone ring-forts can be found to the northeast of the castle, accessible via a side road that leaves the N70 on the left (both National Monuments).
- The hillside fort Leacanabuaile has staircases, chambers within the thickness of the walls, and underground rooms, and Cahergal measures 32 meters in diameter with two stone structures within the walls (more on that below).
- From Cahersiveen, the N70 continues northeast into Kells' broad valley.

- Given that this is where the Ring of Kerry begins, it's no surprise that so many travelers choose to stop here for a while.
- Despite the fact that tourism has made its mark in Kenmare, the town retains much of the atmosphere that existed when it was founded in 1775.
- The two main streets cross at right angles and pass through lovely scenery.
- A Druid's Circle of 15 standing stones on the bank of the River Finnihy is located not far west.
