The Best Places to Visit in Samos
Pythagórion
- The amiable tiny town of Pythagórion on the island's south shore was formerly known as Tigáni until 1955, when it was renamed in honour of Pythagoras, born here.
- It was formerly the historic port of Sámos, a strong nautical and mercantile state in the sixth century BC, and is now surrounded by fishing boats, expensive yachts, and seafood tavernas.
- There are still visible ruins of Greek and Roman structures along with the remains of the ancient walled harbour.
- A tiny archaeological museum showcases ceramics, marble statues, coins, and funeral stelae (gravestones) from the Archaic and Hellenistic periods that were discovered nearby.
Monastery of Panagia Spiliani
- The charming white Monastery of Panagia Spiliani (Monastery of the Cave of the Virgin Mary), established in 1586, is perched on a slope behind the village of Pythagórion.
- A spacious, calm, and tranquil cave with a small, religious icon-adorned church at the end is accessible from the entrance by descending 95 stairs.
- Amazing views of the town and the Turkish shore can be seen below and across the sea from the monastery.
Héraion (Temple of Hera)
- One of the island's most popular tourist destinations in the Heraion is the Temple of Hera, which is located eight kilometres west of Pythagórion.
- From the ninth century BC onward, a series of temples were constructed in this location, culminating in a massive complex that was started around 570 BC and measured roughly 45 metres by 80 metres and was supported by at least 100 columns.
- Thirty years later, during a Persian attack, the building was demolished. Even more of a replacement was intended, which would have been the biggest Greek temple ever constructed, but it was never finished.
- Altars, minor temples, and the remains of a fifth-century Christian basilica can all be found in the archaeological complex surrounding the Heraion.

Aqueduct of Eupalinos
- This underground aqueduct, formerly regarded as one of the Seven Wonders of the World, is located two kilometres west of Pythagoron.
- It is one kilometre long, around 1.75 metres broad, and was built by Eupalinos in the sixth century BC.
- It is noteworthy given that this was done before measuring and mapping were commonplace because excavation from both ends met successfully in the middle.
- The intersection of the two shafts, which created a nearly flawless junction, can be seen about 425 metres from the entrance.
- People who experience claustrophobia should avoid the extremely cramped room.
Sámos Town
- Sámos Town, also known as Vathy or Vathi, was established in 1832 as the island's planned capital in a sheltered cove on the island's northeast shore.
- Modern concrete apartments are spread out along the shore and up the hillside overlooking the sea, while elegant Neoclassical buildings line the harbour's horseshoe form.
- Many homes now have waterside cafés and restaurants on the ground floor.
- Regular ferries travel to and from Piraeus, the port of Athens, from here.
