The Best Places to Visit in Kos
Asklepion
- In 1902, a site near Kos Town where Hippocrates received his training in the fifth century BC was uncovered.
- The Asklepion, elevated above the Kos plain, houses the Sanctuary of Asclepius, the god of medicine.
- With the approval of the sanctuary's priests, sick people would travel from far and wide to seek treatment.
- A visitor today can download an app to their phone and navigate through 3D reconstructions of the sanctuary.
- The location is spread across four enormous terraces and is accessed by a grand staircase. On the lowest terrace, the foundations of the patient rooms still have busts visible in the niches.
- On the level above, there are spas, a medical school, and an abaton (a sanctuary for priests), while on the highest terrace was the "Great Altar," which was once guarded by a giant statue of Asclepius but is now a church.
Ancient Agora
- The Agora, the heart of Ancient Kos' commerce and social life, is located close to the port and a short distance from Nerantzia Castle.
- One of Greece's biggest Agoras, it had to be repeatedly rebuilt after a string of earthquakes because it was first constructed in the 4th century BC.
- It was possible to determine the ages of the confusion of ruins here thanks to the use of limestone in the older constructions and marble in the more recent ones.
- Information boards have been placed every few steps to make things more transparent.
- An arcade, sanctuaries dedicated to Hercules and Aphrodite, the foundations of private homes, and port infrastructure like warehouses are among the sights you can see.
Casa Romana
- This 36-room villa in Kos Town's south was discovered in the 1930s and meticulously restored to provide insight into affluent domestic life in Kos nearly 2,000 years ago.
- The house, built in the second century AD on the foundations of an earlier home from the Hellenistic Period, is centred around two peristyles with magnificent columns and a smaller atrium.
- There are statues of nymphs and Athena to being found, as well as amphorae, coins, mosaics, and faint frescoes, all labelled with interpretive signs.
- The reconstruction makes it clear what is real and what is new.

- White sand and pebbles make up most of the beach, which is pleasant.
- Its location on a tidal gorge of sparkling turquoise water, facing Kastri, a picturesque islet crowned by a tall rock, makes it unique.
- You can rent a pedal boat to cross the channel, explore the islet, and see the church of Agios Nicolaos.
- Two early Christian basilicas from the fourth and fifth centuries AD still stand in ruins on the low promontory that abuts Agios Stephanos beach on its eastern side.
