A Sneak Peek into Kefalonia
- The local wine varieties "Robola," "Mavrodafni," and "Kefalonian Moschato" are well-known in Kefalonia. "Robola," in particular, is one of Greece's top three wine varieties!
- Every year, about 500 tons of "Robola" wine are produced, with the majority of it being exported to Europe and the United States.
- Kefalonia (Cephalonia) is the largest and most beautiful of Greece's Ionian Islands, with bewitching turquoise and cerulean blue waters lapping up against white pebble beaches and pine-scented limestone mountains slashed by lush, green fertile valleys.
- The island's primary source of income in the previous millennium was agriculture, but tourism has grown in importance since the release of the 2001 film Captain Corelli's Mandolin, based on the book by Louis de Bernieres and starring Penelope Cruz and Nicholas Cage.
- Almost all of the island's towns and villages were destroyed by a devastating earthquake in 1953, so there is little historical architecture to be found, with one notable exception: the village of Fiskardo, which miraculously survived the massive destruction.
- On Kefalonia, however, there are still many beautiful places to visit.
- The airport is nine kilometers south of the island's capital, Argostoli.

The Best Places to Visit in Kefalonia
Fiskardo
- Fiskardo, unquestionably Kefalonia's most beautiful village, is located on the island's northeastern tip and is the only settlement to retain its pre-earthquake 18th-century Venetian-style architecture.
- It is popular with sailing crews who moor their yachts here on summer nights, as it is surrounded by a dense cypress glade and built around a sheltered bay.
- The majority of the houses in the harbor area now serve as upmarket seafood restaurants, cafés, and vacation homes.
Assos
- Assos is a quiet little village on the northwest coast of the island, about 10 kilometers from Fiskardo. It is constructed on a causeway that connects a hilly peninsula to the mainland.
- To get there, take a series of hairpin bends until you reach the village, which is nestled in a quaint harbor surrounded by seafood taverns.
- The peninsula is topped by the ruins of a 16th-century Venetian castle, which you can walk up to for a closer look (allow about 40 minutes), and there are a couple of pebble beaches nearby where you can swim.
Myrtos Beach
- Kefalonia is home to one of Greece's most photographed beaches. Myrtos is a lovely town on the island's northwest coast, near Assos.
- The two-kilometer-long beach is bordered by a stunning turquoise-blue sea and is backed by dramatic limestone cliffs.
- It's made of smooth white pebbles that look like sand from a distance. The view from the road above is absolutely breathtaking.
- The beach is a little wild — there's no natural shade from the afternoon sun, and the seabed abruptly shelves into deep water with strong currents, so you'll need to be a strong swimmer.

CULTURE & TRADITIONS
Kefalonia Culture and Traditions
- During the fifteenth century, thanks to Venetian and Turkish hegemony, Cephalonia and the Ionian Islands of Greece are the only areas in Greece where a rapid flowering of culture occurs in all fields of art, something the island had never seen before in its history.
- The islands under Venetian rule were subjected to a refined and culturally advanced occupation that passed on elements of Western culture, in contrast to what was happening on the continent, where Greeks were deprived of not only their national freedom, but also their freedom of thought and expression.
- The people of the Ionian islands of Kefalonia, in particular, were not sterile recipients of Western influences; instead, artists and writers mixed local foreign elements with their popular characteristics.
- The letters were developed in Kefalonia and other Ionian Islands in Greece during the eighteenth century.
- Poetry, prose, translation, archaeological research, and philosophy were all areas where Kefalonian literati excelled.
