- It is not just one of Europe's first UNESCO World Heritage Sites but also one of its oldest.
- This magnificent Roman Catholic cathedral houses many unique historic relics, including a central octagon built-in AD 796 as Charlemagne's royal church (the Palatine Chapel) and a Gothic choir completed in 1414.
- Among the highlights are a candelabrum sent by Frederick I Barbarossa, Charlemagne's marble throne, and a golden reliquary housing his remains.
- The cathedral is also known as the site of Charlemagne's ultimate resting place.
- Though the actual location of his remains is unknown, he is thought to be buried in the Proserpina sarcophagus.
- The cathedral is also notable for its numerous distinctive bronze statues, most of which date back to its founding and were created in a Charlemagne-commissioned socially constructed foundry.
- The abbey's windows are also noteworthy, as they are considered exceptional examples of postwar German design.
