The Best Places to Visit in Reims
Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Reims
- The Cathedral of Notre Dame rises boldly in the heart of Reims, its soaring towers visible from afar.
- The cathedral of Reims holds a unique place in French history.
- The Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Reims, like Westminster Abbey in London, was used for the monarchy's coronation ceremonies (for over eight centuries).
- Joan of Arc was also a regular attendee at this church.
- This hallowed monument stands on the site of Clovis, the first Christian ruler who was baptised in a 5th-century church.
- Following the destruction of that church by fire in 1210, construction on the new cathedral began the following year.
- The majestic 13th-century structure is a High Gothic architectural marvel and one of France's best cathedrals.
Palais du Tau (Archbishops' Palace)
- The Palais du Tau, a UNESCO-listed structure adjacent to the cathedral, was once the archbishops' palace.
- Even though the mediaeval palace was nearly completely reconstructed in French Neoclassical style in the 17th century, it contains some well-preserved mediaeval halls.
- The royal rooms, where kings remained during their coronation rites, are open to the public.
- It's easy to envisage the grandeur of prior royal occasions in these magnificent surroundings.
- Beautiful 15th-century Arras tapestries adorn the Salle de Tau, the banquet hall used after coronation rites (held next door at the church).
- A treasury in the palace's 13th-century Chapelle Palatine houses notable treasures such as Charlemagne's 9th-century talisman and Saint Rémi's 12th-century chalice.
Basilique Saint-Rémi
- The Basilique Saint-Rémi is Reims' oldest church and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is an outstanding Early Romanesque building.
- This magnificent church was constructed between 1005 and 1049 (for a Benedictine abbey) on the foundation of an 8th-century Carolingian chapel that drew many pilgrims.
- The interior retains parts of the old Romanesque structure, despite the exterior's Gothic appearance.
- The sanctuary's warm and ethereal atmosphere is created by the harmonious 11th-century nave, lighted by 12th-century stained-glass windows.
- At the same time, the choir and surrounding chapels are designed in a calm Early Gothic style that promotes spiritual worship.
- Since the 8th century, the basilica has housed the tomb of Saint Rémi (440-533), making it a pilgrimage centre.
