A Sneak Peek into Deauville
- Deauville was designed with visitors in mind. It arose from the dunes in the 1860s as a result of the vision of one Dr Joseph Olliffe and his close friend, Emperor Napoleon III's half-brother, the Duke de Morny.
- Only marshes were between the sea and this small hillside settlement by the end of the 1850s. Dr Olliffe persuaded affluent backers to invest in a massive programme to clear the marshes and build a coastal resort from scratch.
- Desle-François Breney, the resort's architect, was inspired by Baron Haussmann's reconstruction of Paris. The resort was fully operational in four years, thanks to an essential new railway line.
- Elegant Parisians were catered to by grand hotels erected in the Anglo-Norman timber-frame architecture, intelligent bathing facilities, and a fashionable racecourse.
- Over time, more stylish embellishments were made. During the Belle Epoque, just before World War I, additional opulent hotels and an enormous casino was built. During World War I, Deauville's grand hotels were converted as hospitals for wounded Allied soldiers.
- Deauville erected a splendid new train station between the wars and its distinctive Art Deco bathing facilities and wooden promenade.
- The international prestige of the beach resort rose after WWII. Added a cluster of marinas along the Touques estuary to its permanent attractions, while the Deauville American Film Festival, which began in 1975, began attracting stars and moviegoers every September.

Calvados and cider
#Food
- Calvados and cider are inextricably linked to the gastronomic environment of the region that, coincidentally, gave the latter its name.
- Normandy is an apple-growing region with over 400 apple types, each with a name that is more lyrical than the last: Rossignol, Rouge-Mulot, or Change-Souvent.
- The region's cider indeed shows the smells of the fruit, processed using age-old traditions, with its golden colour, exuberant bubbles, and fluffy head of foam. It's designed to be served chilled with food.
- On the other hand, Calvados is made from the distillation of cider, which is then aged in wood casks for 3 to 20 years. It can be used as an aperitif, after-dinner liqueur, or even in coffee.
Normandy cheeses: Camembert, Pont-l’Évêque et Livarot
#Food
- Camembert, Pont-l'Évêque, and Livarot cheeses are among the region's most popular delicacies.
- Camembert, a cheese made from the unpasteurised milk of Normande cows, is at the top of the pack, with a soft centre, bloomy rind, and a rich, fruity flavour.
- Of course, it goes well with a nice cider, but it's also used in various recipes, including puff pastry meals and croquettes.
- Livarot is recognised for its orangey rind and characteristic milky flavour with traces of fruit and hay and is best served with bread after a meal.
- Pont l'Évêque is a more delicate, harder cheese popular among gourmets.
Scallops
#Food
- Scallops, the most regal shellfish, take on an even more sumptuous dimension in Normandy, with abundant meat and well-rounded coral.
- Scallops from Normandy's waters are harvested using fishing dredges and are stamped with a red label, ensuring their freshness and quality.
- These can be prepared in various ways, which you can sample at some of Deauville's finest restaurants.
- These specialities will not disappoint, whether pan-fried or roasted with a bit of salted butter, marinated in cider vinegar, sliced with cream or even a bechamel sauce.
- They will surely make you feel like you're at a party. Don't pass up this great delight during your holiday.
Stylish Seaside Shopping
#Fashion
- In the pedestrian zone between the beach and the polo field, high-end French brands have set up shop.
- Coco Chanel opened her second boutique, following the one on rue Cambon in Paris, 100 years ago.
