The Best Places to Visit in Chambéry

destination - Seasons to travel

Old Town

  • Chambéry's compact core is most people's idea of the ideal old town, as it is a functioning university town rather than an outdoor museum.
  • It's not a large park, but you could walk around for hours without feeling like you've seen everything.
  • This is due to the vaulted passageways, similar to the Traboules in Lyon and leads to secret courtyards and parallel streets and alleys no wider than an arm's width.
  • On Rue Croix d'Or, the now pedestrianized street draped in the Savoy colours where the nobility once resided, things take a turn for the grander, and you'll never be more than seconds from a cafe, crêperie, or glacier.
destination - Seasons to travel

Place Saint-Léger

  • Place Saint-Léger is Chambéry's main pedestrian thoroughfare and, despite its name, is more of a long street than a city square.
  • The street opens to large areas with restaurant and cafe seating along its length before tapering to just a few metres across and is paved with pink granite.
  • The buildings, which are a jumble of styles and eras, are painted in pastel colours.
  • You might be tempted to duck down one of the allées, vaulted passageways that branch off the street.
  • Hôtel Dieulefis, Hôtel de Montjoie, and Hôtel du Bourget, all dating from the 1500s to the 1700s, are three lovely old townhouses to look out for.
destination - Seasons to travel

Fontaine des Éléphants

  • The Fontaine des Éléphants, featured on many postcards and possibly Chambéry's primary identifier, was built in 1838 and is a French historical monument.
  • Four elephants protrude only their heads and front legs, one on each side of the fountain's plinth.
  • The fountain has earned the affectionate moniker "Les quatre sans culs" (the four without butts). The fountain's namesake, Benoît de Boigne, is commemorated by a statue atop a 17-meter column.
  • He was a general who made his name in India (hence the elephants) and returned with a fortune, which he spent on public works and welfare in Chambéry.

Chambéry Cathedral

  • Despite its small size, the city's cathedral has a lot to offer.
  • The interior is most notable for its 6,000 square meters of lavish Italian trompe l'oeil painting, Europe's largest ensemble, created in stages during the 1800s.
  • This structure had been a church attached to a Franciscan monastery before becoming a cathedral, and it housed the Shroud of Turin for a time in the 1400s.
  • Of course, that treasure has moved on, but the treasure room now houses an 1100s Byzantine ivory altarpiece painting and a 1400s polychrome nativity scene.
destination - Seasons to travel

Musée des Beaux-Arts

  • The fine arts museum proves that Chambéry was not always French, as nearly all works on display are Italian.
  • The Primitives are the first of these, dating from the 1300s to the 1700s.
  • The 14th-century altarpiece depicting the Trinity by Sienese artist Bartolo di Fredi is sublime, and from there, you can follow the evolution of the Neapolitan, Venetian, Florentine, and Bolognese schools into the Renaissance, Mannerism, and Baroque.
  • Take a look at what's on because there's a lot of exhibition space for temporary exhibits.
destination - Seasons to travel

Les Charmettes

  • The polymath Jean-Jacques Rousseau lived in this lovely country house in a wooded hollow on the outskirts of Chambéry as a young man.
  • He lived here with his mentor and mistress, Madame de Warrens, from 1736 to 1742, and later in life, he described his time in Les Charmettes as idyllic.
  • People have come to Les Charmettes to learn why Rousseau loved it since he became an icon of the Enlightenment and Romantic movements.
  • The house is decorated in the 1730s style, with some of Rousseau's personal effects on show, and the grounds include an 18th-century style garden with herbs, medicinal plants, fruits, and vegetables.

Beaufort

#food

  • Beaufort is a cheese made from raw Tarentaise cow's milk that has been manufactured in the Rhône-Alpes area of France since the Middle Ages.
  • It is typically aged for four to five months, much longer than its softer Alpine counterparts.
  • Beaufort is salt-rubbed every day for the first two months, and once the rind has matured enough, the cheese wheels are smeared with morge, a mixture of brine, whey, and old cheese scrapings.
  • This distinctive convex-sided cheese is available in three varieties known as Le Beaufort, Le Beaufort d'Été and Le Beaufort Chalet d'Alpage.

Chocolate truffles

#food

  • Ganache is shaped into a ball, dipped in chocolate, and rolled in cocoa powder to make chocolate truffles.
  • Chocolate truffles were born in 1828, when the cocoa press was invented, allowing chocolatiers to extract cocoa butter from cocoa beans.
  • After extracting the cocoa butter, they were left with chocolate solids, which they combined with cream to make the ganache, the key ingredient used as the inner layer of chocolate truffles.
  • To generate flavours such as peanut butter, cognac, champagne, caramel, fruits, or nuts are added to the ganache.

Tomme de Savoie

#food

  • Tomme de Savoie is a semi-soft, uncooked cheese with a grey rind with yellow and red spots.
  • In the French regions of Savoie and Haute-Savoie, the cheese is made from cow's milk.
  • It is the oldest cheese from the Savoie region, where the mountain climate contributes to the cheese's distinctive characteristics.
  • Tomme de Savoie was created when local peasants used their summer milk supplies to make cheese to last through the winter.
  • Tomme de Savoie is made from the leftover skimmed milk after the cream is drained to make butter, which is why it has a low-fat content (40 per cent).

Royal Arcade

#FASHION

  • The city's oldest shopping mall, dating from 1856, offers everything from antiques to clothing.
  • All of the Arcades in central Chambery are fantastic, with a diverse range of shops and merchandise.
  • The arcades, the castle, and the museum are far preferable to the mega-stores in the central area, which are fine except for the gangs of beggars and winos.
  • The city must clear the area of panhandlers and drunks who use abusive language and behaviour.

The Castle Quarter Arcades

#FASHION

  • The Castle Quarter Arcades have been a part of Chambery's architectural and retail heritage for 131 years since they first opened their doors in 1885.
  • The Castle Quarter comprises three magnificent Victorian and Edwardian arcades: Castle Arcade, High Street Arcade, and Duke Street Arcade, all within walking distance of Chambery Castle.
  • Without sacrificing any of its old-world graces, the Castle Quarter has evolved and adapted to the needs of a modern shopping environment.
  • The Castle Quarter has grown and adapted to the needs of a modern shopping environment without losing any of its old-world charms. Originally home to many specialist shops of the era - drapers, apothecaries, tailors, jewellers, and fortune-tellers - the Castle Quarter has grown and adapted to the needs of a modern shopping environment without losing any of its old-world charms.
  • Castle Arcade is known for its striking central junction built in two sections between 1882 and 1889.
