The Best Places to Visit in Bergerac
Old Town
- Bergerac's mediaeval district is an angular jumble of alleys descending to the river on the right bank of the Dordogne.
- You'll fall in love with the half-timbered mansions, such as Maison Gaudreau on Rue des Fontaines, dating back to the 1300s.
- Down Rue Gaudreau is "Le Cadeau," a stream that initially powered the city's seven water mills and now powers a camouflaged little hydroelectric plant on Rue des Fontaines.
- The skin and hide traders who used to work on the square gave the square its name, and it is here that you can see the Church of Saint-Jacques and look up at the wooden perch built for the bell-ringers.
Tobacco Museum
- Bergerac is home to one of Europe's remaining tobacco plantations.
- Regardless of your feelings towards the business, there's no denying that the factory has a fascinating backstory.
- The exhibit looks into how it was initially cultivated over 3,000 years ago, brought to Europe once America was found, and how it influenced society in the 17th and 18th centuries.
- A tobacco bag and a soapstone pipe crafted by the Sioux Native American tribe are among the well-curated items on display.
- The tobacco museum is housed in Maison Peyrarède, a mansion constructed just as the renaissance style gave way to classicism.
Wine
- The Bergerac region features 13 appellations, each with its distinct personality and inflexions.
- This region produces rosé, red, dry or sweet whites, and dessert wine, and it's the only one in France with a 50-50 ratio between red and white.
- There are more châteaux and caves than you could ever visit in a single holiday.
- Many people require up to half a day: Châteaux like Court Les Mûts in Saussignac provide more than just wine tours, meetings with vintners, and tasting sessions; they also include oenology laboratories, wine museums, and cellars that double as art galleries.

Le Cloître des Récollets
- In this 17th-century monks' cellar, the wine council for the Bergerac and Duras areas meets, which effectively means all of the local producers.
- The building is impressive, with a lovely wooden Renaissance gallery overlooking the courtyard.
- From there, stroll across to the "Vinothèque," which takes you on a tour of the region's prehistory and features a "sensorial table" where you may sample the aromas of Bergerac and Duras wines.
Château de Monbazillac
- The Château de Monbazillac is surrounded by one of Bergerac's most recognised vineyards, which rises steeply from the left bank of the Dordogne.
- The castle was built in 1550 as a defensive structure and provided a breathtaking perspective of Bergerac, which lies just a few kilometres to the north.
- You can tour the property purchased by Huguenots in the 1600s, which is furnished with period pieces.
- In the end, there's a complimentary taste of the beautiful dessert wines grown on the château's 25 hectares of vines.

Bergerac Culture and Traditions
- Bergerac, built on the banks of the Dordogne, owes its existence to the river, which made it an essential stopover for travellers and merchants from its inception.
- This trade and exchange tradition is now honoured in the Tobacco Museum, which looks back over 3,000 years of history and use of this Amerindian plant.
- Bergerac, surrounded by a large vineyard, produces wines of character with a well-established reputation.
- A trip to the Bergerac Quai Cyrano wine region is now necessary.
- It is part of the Cloister of Récollets, an impressive 17th-century building, and allows visitors to explore the area's ten appellations for free.
- Nothing beats a visit to the town's famous covered market to complement this delicate beverage.
- A convivial spot par excellence, it is possible to savour the products of local producers directly on the spot during the summer.
- Of course, discovering the city entails, first and foremost, discovering its historic core.
- Bergerac's charm can be found in its maze of old alleys and shady squares surrounded by half-timbered houses.
- If you raise your eyes a little, you will undoubtedly see some depictions of a particular historical figure made famous at the end of the nineteenth century by a play whose words still ring in our ears.

Poulet du Périgord
#Food
- Poulet du Périgord is a slow-growing chicken breed from the Périgord area in France's southwest corner.
- These meaty birds' white or yellow skin with tight muscles covers just the proper amount of equally distributed fat.
- Poulet du Périgord is reared and slaughtered entirely within the aforementioned geographical area, and Périgord slaughterhouses have established unique know-how that contributes to the product's quality and renown.
Agneau du Périgord
#Food
- Fresh lamb meat from lambs slaughtered between the ages of 80 and 180 days and weighing between 15 and 21 kilogrammes is Agneau du Périgord.
- They were born and raised in the French provinces of Dordogne, Corréze, Lot, and Lot et Garonne.
- The animals are fed grains and local fodder after being fed their mother's milk for at least 60 days.
- The flesh has a balanced, delicate taste that is not too strong, a light pink colour, and a thin covering of white, firm, high-quality fat that generates melt-in-your-mouth qualities due to their raising and feeding.
Fraise du Périgord
#Food
- Since 1895, strawberries known as Fraise du Périgord have been produced in open fields and hills dotted with chestnut trees in the Dordogne area of France.
- All strawberries must pass stringent quality standards in terms of colour, size, shape, sugar content, firmness, and lustre.
- Périgord strawberries come in six types and are supplied in 250 or 500-gramme packs.
- These hand-picked strawberries have a strong, sweet, deep, and fresh flavour balanced by a nice amount of acidity, and they're best served on their own with whipped cream, in fruit salads, or as sorbets.

#Fashion

#Fashion
- The leading shops of Bergerac can be found further away from the river and the old town.

- The countryside around Bergerac is pleasant and green, as we've seen.
- The few hills that exist are rounded and forgiving, such as Monbazillac to the south, which rests on a plateau and has a circular path that winds its way around this tiny community through a vineyard-studded countryside.
- The tourist office in Bergerac can provide you with any maps or guidebooks you may require.
- You might also stay by the river; there are a few routes along the grassy banks, with orchards, meadows, and sunflower fields and sheet-like emerald waters on the other.
- Bergerac is a long way from the sea, but a beautiful lake might fill the void if the summer heat becomes unbearable.
- There's one just north of town, and lifeguards supervise the lake's beach from July to the end of August.
- Lac de Pombonne is tucked away in a 50-hectare park surrounded by meadows, forests, and farms where sheep and donkeys graze.
- Picnic tables and lawns line the sandy beach, and there are trails into the forest for bikers and hikers and a dedicated fishing spot on the lakefront.
