The Best Places to Visit in Tampere

destination - Seasons to travel

Museum Vapriikki

  • Vapriikki is a collection of museums rolled into one, housed in the spacious former engineering works of Tampella, a 20th-century heavy industry manufacturer.
  • Everyone should find something to their liking at the Media Museum, Natural History Museum, Mineral Museum, Postal Museum, or Doll Museum.
  • The complex is massive, covering 14,000 square meters, so there's plenty of space for temporary exhibitions at Vapriikki.
  • Take a look at what's happening: Terracotta warriors from China and Egyptian mummies have surfaced in recent years.
destination - Seasons to travel

Pyynikki Observation Tower

  • Pyynikki, a part of Tampere that sits on the world's largest esker, is next to the water on the city's western side (a vast gravel ridge formed by glacial activity).
  • This means for Tampere is a fantastic location for afternoon strolls with unobstructed views of the city and surrounding Lakeland scenery.
  • In 1929, the Pyynikki Observation Tower was built to replace a late-nineteenth-century timber tower bombed during World War I.
  • You can walk to the top, which will reward you with viewing portals as you ascend.
  • The cafe known for its delicious doughnuts with a secret recipe is another reason to visit Pyynikki.
destination - Seasons to travel

Tampere Cathedral

  • This Lutheran Church was built around the turn of the twentieth century in the Nordic National Romantic Style, an art nouveau offshoot.
  • The frescoes, which adorned much of the church's interior and were painted by symbolist artist Hugo Simberg in 1905 and 1906, set Tampere Cathedral apart.
  • These images didn't sit well with everyone at the time, and it's easy to see why: The Garden of Death features three creepy figures who appear to be the Grim Reaper tending to a garden.
  • The Wounded Angel is also depicted here; in 2006, it was chosen as Finland's national painting.
destination - Seasons to travel

Finnish Hockey Hall of Fame

  • Part of the Vapriikki museum complex documents and honours the history of Finland's most popular sport.
  • Ice hockey was introduced to Finland in the 1920s, and it wasn't considered a spectator sport until the first indoor arena was built in 1965.
  • On the other hand, the Finnish National Team has won everything from World Championships to Olympic medals in the last 50 years.
  • Take a look at the evolution of hockey training and pay homage to NHL Stanley Cup winners like Ville Nieminen and Esa Tikkanen if you're a fan of the game.
destination - Seasons to travel

Kaleva Church

  • Kaleva Church, designed by architects Reima and Raili Pietilä, dated from 1966 and was designated a protected structure ten years ago.
  • Its appearance is difficult to describe. It resembles a massive concrete grain silo from the side, earning it the nickname "The Silo of the Souls" among locals.
  • What you'll notice on the inside is how bright it is.
  • The windows run from the floor to the roof, and the walls appear to be folded at odd angles.
  • The architects themselves designed all of the interior furnishings, including the eye-catching organ housing.

Kaakinmaa, Pyynikinrinne & Nalkala

  • Because they border the Baltic Sea and are away from the hustle and bustle of the City Centre, the districts of Kaakinmaa, Pyynikinrinne, and Nalkala are among the best places to stay in Tampere.
  • These three districts have one thing in common: they are all reformed and urbanised areas with various entertainment options.
  • The Emil Aaltonen Museum, for example, has a cinema and a 250-piece art exhibition for art lovers.
  • Another good option for musical theatre, comedy, and Finnish drama is the Workers' Theatre, which is located near the Lenin Museum.
  • Pyynikki Summer Theatre is another must-see attraction in the area, with its open-air revolving auditorium where nature plays a role.
  • On the other hand, Rosendahl Beach is a great place to swim for those who prefer to relax by the sea.
  • There are several bus stops throughout the districts of Kaakinmaa, Pyynikinrinne, and Nalkala.
  • The districts of Kaakinmaa, Pyynikinrinne, and Nalkala are, without a doubt, among the best places to stay in Tampere for nature lovers looking for peace.

  • Tampere is known as the world's sauna capital, but there's a lot more to it.
  • In the Lakeland region, it's a lovely site on a narrow isthmus between two huge lakes.
  • The city's central rapids are surrounded by old, industrial red-brick buildings that now serve as restaurants, cafes, museums, and shops.
  • Tampere's compact downtown area is ideal for walking and gives the city a friendly, small-town feel.
  • There are many beautiful districts outside the old city centre with scenic views of the surrounding lakes.
  • The city's fascinating cultural sights, relaxed atmosphere, numerous kid-friendly attractions and the surrounding scenery make it the top travel destination for Finns in their homeland.

Tampere: Natural Beauty & Safari Adventures

destination - Seasons to travel
  • Seitseminen National Park is roughly 50 kilometres from Tampere in Ruovesi. Because public transportation connections to Seitseminen are limited, especially during the summer, driving to the park is the best option.
  • If you're visiting Seitseminen for the first time, start your visit at the Seitseminen Nature Centre, where you can acquire information on the park and trails and learn about the area's flora and wildlife.
  • The Nature Centre is an excellent place for youngsters to spend time, and there's also a café-restaurant nearby if you feel hungry before or after a day in the beautiful outdoors.
  • In Seitseminen, there are a variety of trails to choose from, ranging from an hour's walk to a full day's hike.
  • Most of the trails are forest walks and wood paths over marsh areas, although some, such as the viewpoint at Saari-Soljanen and the Kovero crown tenant farm, are wheelchair or buggy accessible.
  • There are distinct cross-country skiing trails in the winter, and in the summer, you may ride your bike to explore the sights.
  • Helvetinjärvi national park is located in Seitseminen and is around 50 kilometres from Tampere.
  • Helvetinjärvi (Finnish for Hell's Lake) is similarly best accessed by car, as there are no public transportation options within 10 kilometres of the park.
  • The gorges that have dominated the landscape for millions of years make Helvetinjärvi such a fascinating destination to visit.
  • The park's main attraction is the Helvetinkolu Gorge, although the lakes surrounded by towering cliffs are also worth seeing.
  • The most spectacular view is from the craggy Helvetinkolu's higher landing, which looks down into the valley and over Iso Helvetinjärvi Lake.
  • Helvetistä Itään (East of Hell) is the name of the central trail in Helvetinjärvi national park, which is about 4 kilometres long and includes the restaurant Helvetin Portti (Gateway to Hell).
  • There are many other paths, some longer and some shorter, and you can begin following the Pirkan Taival hiking route network.
  • Pirkan Taival also connects Helvetinjärvi and Seitseminen national parks.
  • The Puurijärvi and Isosuo national parks are located just over an hour from Tampere, along the Kokemäenjoki river.
  • The area consisting of huge marsh areas and the shallow, green Puurijärvi lake, an internationally important bird lake, is described at Luontoon.
  • The national parks of Puurijärvi and Isosuo provide a unique natural landscape in the heart of a historically significant cultural area.
  • A day trip to the area is ideal. Three defined pathways (0,5–2 km) lead to the birdwatching towers in Puurijärvi-Isosuo national park.
  • The area is unusual due to the wetland bird habitats and natural nature of the mires, and you may spot cranes, dragonflies, and even the rare European beaver!
  • This national park is located in Kuhmoinen and can be reached by automobile in about one and a half hours from Tampere.
  • Both two-legged and four-legged loggers left traces in the wooded hills and valleys surrounding Lake Isojärvi.
  • Former lumberjack cabins and croft dwellings can be reached via old cycle trails. Beavers are the only loggers in the park today.
  • These cautious animals are challenging to see, yet the remarkable fruits of their labours cannot be overlooked.
  • There are two natural trails (3–3.5km) and several defined paths that can join circular routes (4.5–11km).
  • Travellers with prams can use the 500-meter trail from Heretty to the Kannuslahti camping site. Stop by the Heretty cabin summer café if you're visiting Isojärvi in the summer!
