Best Months to Visit Rovaniemi
- Due to the beautiful all-year climate conditions, April-June is the best time to visit Rovaniemi, and it is unlikely to be at its busiest because it is not during the peak travel season.
- Summer temperatures can exceed 26°C (78°F) in the middle of the day.
- Temperatures in the winter can drop to -17°C (1°F) around January.
- If you want to make the most of your time in Rovaniemi, or if you're terrified of the dark, July has the longest days between sunrise and sunset.
- The wet season in Rovaniemi typically occurs in the months preceding August each year.
- It's not uncommon to have significant rain or light showers this time of year, but on some days, the weather is pleasant for most of the day, with only a few drops of rain falling from a passing storm.

WORTH A VISIT
The Best Places to Visit in Rovaniemi
A Finnish Reindeer
- From early summer to the beginning of fall, you may view and feed reindeer beside Santa Claus's Office in Rovaniemi - no need to book, pay over 5€ and pet, feed, and take as many pictures with them as you want — with no time limit.
- You can even hike or sledge with them if you visit other seasons of the year!
- As silky as silk and smelling like marshmallows, be sure to question your guide about each unique reindeer and the region's reindeer herding history.
- True, the number of reindeer in Lapland is about equal to the population, and Finns, like Australians, consume their most emblematic mammal.
- If you're wondering why they eat them, it's because otherwise, the reindeer would take over Lapland and who would deliver all the Christmas presents?
The Iconic Arktikum Science Museum
- If you visit one museum in Rovaniemi (or even Finland), the Arktikum Science Museum is my unqualified recommendation.
- With a focus on Arctic Science and the history of Finnish Lapland in particular, spending a whole day here is not out of the question.
- The temporary exhibitions change frequently, but the primary permanent exhibits focus on the 'Northern Ways' and what life is like in the world's northernmost locations.
- There is also a fantastic video room where visitors can see the Northern Lights even in the middle of summer and displays showing Lapland's ordinary life and stories.
- One of the most politically exciting rooms is dedicated to the history of Petsamo, or Finland's eastern "arm," which provided access to the Arctic Ocean coast from 1920 until 1944.
- After being inhabited for millennia by the Sami people, it became part of Russia in 1533 and then part of Finland in 1920.
- The territory was taken by the Red Army and annexed by the Soviet Union in the 1944 Peace Treaty.
- If you've ever wondered how people or wildlife live in such harsh temperatures, why the indigenous Sami people differ from other ethnic groups, or what environmental changes global warming will bring to the region in the future, here is the place to see!
The Rovaniemi Art Museum
- Rovaniemi may be more known for the Northern Lights, Husky Rides, and A Certain Jolly Old Man, but that doesn't mean you can't mix in some high-brow culture.
- All you have to do is go to the Rovaniemi Art Museum, located inside the Korundi House of Culture.
- The annual shifting shows, which focus on Finnish contemporary and Northern art, always feature Lapland artists who either worked in the region or were born here.
- Here you will find both well-known and emerging artists to watch.
- Most of the work here explores or is influenced by the natural beauty of Lapland, as one would expect from artists who dwell in such a beautiful place.
- What fascinates me the most, however, is how you can watch the dominant perspectives of nature change throughout time, from the romanticism that accompanied industrialisation and tried to depict the beauty of nature.
- After all, untamed nature and unspoiled wilderness were opposed to culture and a retreat from unclean towns. Later styles reflect a more realistic, nature-inspired manner of painting, or even grittier works, notably following the Finnish Civil War.

The Arktikum Beach
- An Arctic garden on a small island spanning seven hectares is tucked away in front of the Arktikum Museum, alongside the lovely shores of the Ounasjoki River.
- While you should come here for the peaceful isolation and vistas of the Ounasjoki River, there is also a fantastic display of alpine flora species, each of which is specially adapted to survive the harsh northern environment of Lapland and the Arctic.
- Every season has a cause to visit, whether in the summer when you can swim under the midnight sun beaming on the beach from the north or in the winter when the Arktikum beach is one of the greatest sites in Rovaniemi to observe the northern lights.
- Autumn brings out the changing trees' beautiful orange and scarlet colours, while spring entices tourists with new life peeping forth from the suddenly snow-free ground.
- If you want to take a long walk in the sun, the route from Arktikum Beach runs to the south of Rovaniemi along the Ounasjoki River, so this is a tranquil and beautiful area to do it.
The Chic Arctic Light Hotel
- You'll need to sleep someplace in Rovaniemi, so why not try the most excellent hotel in Finland and one of the best new hotels in the world, according to Travel Leisure?
- The Arctic Light Hotel, a contemporary family-owned hotel, emanates Lappish hospitality and design at every step.
- The Arctic Light Hotel, housed in a 1950s structure and old Rovaniemi City Hall, literally only steps all of Rovaniemi's key attractions and significant commercial and cultural areas - including one block to the river.

Poronkäristys
#Food
- Poronkäristys is Finland's national dish, made by sautéing reindeer meat.
- The dish comes from Arctic Lapland, where the semi-nomadic, indigenous Saame people have been herding reindeer for centuries.
- Thin slices of reindeer meat are typically sautéed in butter, with or without onions, before being slowly cooked in beer or stock until tender and luscious.
- The dish's most common and traditional accompaniments are creamy mashed potatoes and lingonberry jam, but they can also be served with pasta or rice.
- Although the meal is frequently served in restaurants throughout Finland, frozen meat can be purchased in most stores.
Lapin Poron liha
#Food
- Lapin Poron liha is meat made from reindeer calves under one year old, and adult reindeer graze freely in Finland's reindeer farming area.
- The severe climate, changing seasons, and a wealthy summer diet make reindeer meat a one-of-a-kind product.
- This meat is moist, dark, and high in vitamins and minerals. It has hugely few fats, yet those fats are as nutritious as fish fats due to their high fatty acid concentration.
- The difference between calf and adult reindeer meat is in the fat and energy content, which is higher in the latter.
Lappi
#Food
- Lappi is a semi-soft Finnish cheese called after its home province of Lapland.
- This rindless cheese is manufactured from cow's milk that has been partially skimmed.
- It has a smooth, creamy, and solid texture with several little holes scattered throughout.
- Lappi melts smoothly and has a gentle, sweet flavour.
- You should use it in fondues and serve it with a glass of dessert wine on the side.
Revontuli Shopping Centre
#Fashion
- The Revontuli Shopping Centre is located above the E4 main road in the centre of Rovaniemi.
- Revontuli has over 30 shops that sell clothing for the entire family, beauty items, sports and wellness products, books and games, and much more.
- They also have a supermarket where you can buy groceries and other home items.

- The Official Santa Claus Shopping Centre is Revontuli.
- This also means you can frequently meet Santa Claus at our shopping centre, especially during the holiday season.
- There are also popular children's activities, exhibitions, tours, and fashion shows that draw visitors from all over.
- The shopping centre offers a heated parking garage with 300 spaces. Our service-oriented employees are fluent in multiple languages.
Sarkanniemi Adventure Park
#Fun
- Särkänniemi Adventure Park combines six diverse experiences to create a fantastic family destination!
- Särkänniemi has 34 different rides, giving violent whirls, soothing swaying, and other exciting experiences accented with water sprays, for example.
- The newest rollercoaster this summer swirls passengers around like a tornado. When spinning, the ride reaches a height of 15.6m.
- The upper section of the ride rotates at a maximum of 12 revolutions per minute, while the arms rotate at four revolutions per minute.
- The attraction has 24 seats that spin freely, giving each trip a unique experience. High Voltage has a height restriction of 130cm.
- Antonio Zamperla S.p.A., an Italian business, built the attraction.
Santa Park
#Fun
- Along with Santa Claus, the cavern is home to innumerable happy and helpful elves, and children can learn their techniques at Elf School.
- A bakery where you may help the elves decorate gingerbread, a café, an ice bar, and a gallery are all available.
- Every two hours, the elves perform an amusing show for the youngsters on the stage, and there is a charming train that takes you around the cavern.
- Santa Park also has plenty of outdoor activities for the whole family, such as Husky sledge rides, Reindeer sleighs, Skidoo and mini-Skidoo rides, and sledging.
- Don't worry about the cold because SantaPark provides arctic wear for outdoor activities, and there are several open fires and hot berry juices to keep the chill at bay.

Rovaniemi Must-Attend Festivals and Events
- While Finland's Lapland region is famed for its colder seasons, the summer is equally as stunning.
- Sodankylä comes to life a week before summertime when it hosts the Midnight Sun Film Festival.
- The little hamlet of fewer than 10,000 people has become a centre of world-class cinema and culture.
- The festival was started in 1986 by Finnish directors Aki and Mika Kaurismäki, in collaboration with the town of Sodankylä, and has grown steadily since then.
- International guests arrive every year for a programme combining old and new, high and low.
- The atmosphere is relaxed despite the presence of film heavyweights such as Francis Ford Coppola and Wim Wenders.
