Best Months to Visit Paphos

destination - Seasons to travel
  • Paphos is known for its warm climate, which is due to its location on the Mediterranean's south-west coast in Cyprus.
  • Summer temperatures reach highs of 31 degrees Celsius, with mild lows of 26 degrees Celsius.
  • Between June and September, when the weather is at its best, is the hottest and best time to visit Paphos.
  • Throughout the summer, you can expect plenty of hot sunshine, clear blue skies, and warm temperatures. Mount Olympus, which is located in Paphos, provides protection from heavy rainfall.
  • The east coast is also protected from harsh winds by the mountainous region. If you're staying in the north or south of the island, however, you can expect to be cooled by the Mediterranean winds.
  • In the winter, there are fewer hours of sunlight, and it's not uncommon for the sunset to occur around 4.50 p.m. in February.
  • As the month progresses, the time will become later, and the days will gradually lengthen as we approach spring.

The Best Places to Visit in Paphos

destination - Seasons to travel

House of Dionysus

  • The mosaic pavements of the House of Dionysus, as well as the surrounding mosaic houses, are among the best in the Mediterranean, and they are Paphos' most popular tourist attraction.
  • They are part of the larger Paphos Archaeological Site, which stretches across the harbor's western side.
  • The mosaic artwork here was discovered by chance by a farmer plowing his fields, and it is in excellent condition, depicting scenes from Greek mythology in vibrant natural limestone colors.
  • At the back of the house, one of the most well-known mosaics depicts a Ganymede being carried back to Olympus by an eagle.
  • The most famous mosaic, however, depicts Dionysos' triumph, with the God riding in a chariot drawn by leopards, with a crowd of followers celebrating in various ways behind him.
  • The House of Aion, located directly across from the House of Dionysos, contains five superb mosaic scenes.
  • Look to the top left of the house for a swan-like representation of Leda and Zeus. The top right panel depicts Dionysos as a baby, accompanied by various nymphs, while the middle panel depicts Aion as the judge of a beauty contest between sea nymphs.
  • The final image depicts Apollo punishing a foolish man who had lost a musical duel with the God.The House of Theseus is close by, and the south wing mosaic depicting Theseus fighting a Minotaur is worth seeing.
destination - Seasons to travel

Agora & Odeon

  • Although the Paphos Archaeological Site's mosaics are the most popular attraction, the area also contains the ruins of an Odeon, Agora, and Asklepion from the town's Roman era.
  • The Odeon (a small theater) has 12 rows of seating and is still used for summer music festivals. The Agora, with only the foundations and parts of the columns visible, has a large court (95 square meters) in front of it that served as a Roman marketplace.
  • The ruins of ancient city walls can be found nearby.
  • A modern lighthouse stands next to the Odeon, as well as a rocky mound that is thought to be the town's Acropolis. There was once a temple here, but only a few ruins remain.
  • A collection of buildings to the south once served as an Asklepion (shrine to the god of healing, Asklepios), though little remains.
destination - Seasons to travel

Tombs of the Kings

  • The rock-cut chambers of the Tombs of the Kings are a short two-kilometer walk out of town.
  • These magnificent underground tombs, dating from the 4th century BC, are carved out of solid rock, some with Doric pillars, and all with an Egyptian influence.
  • This UNESCO World Heritage Site was used as a burial ground for high-ranking officials and members of society in ancient Paphos during the Greek and Roman periods.
  • There are seven tombs to visit here, but if you're short on time, head straight for tomb number three, which has the most interesting architectural features, including a plethora of columns surrounding its atrium.
