Larnaca Salt Lake & Hala Sultan Tekke Mosque

  • The Salt Lake of Larnaca is the first place of interest you will see after landing at Larnaca International Airport. A beautiful natural setting.
  • The Larnaca Salt Lake has a surface area of 2.2 Km2 and is one of Cyprus's most significant wetlands.
  • Its history as a natural habitat for marine life dates back between three and five million years.
  • The nearby hills are home to fossilised life from this era. Salt Lake was a gulf in the ancient era.
  • It served as a natural port for the ancient settlement next to Hala Sultan Tekke beginning in the 17th century B.C., but the residents eventually left during the 11th century B.C.
  • The natural port was destroyed around the same time the gulf was sealed, resulting in the formation of the central Salt Lake.
  • Excavations in the area suggest that transatlantic trade was starting. This may have been one of the first natural ports that allowed trade between Cyprus and the significant civilisations in the vicinity.
  • Porphyry-red dies, produced from the juices of murex shells, was one of the more significant and expensive exports of this prehistoric settlement and the nearby thriving town of Kition.
  • These shells were standard in the gulf and are still present in the Larnaca Bay, where the salt lake's water frequently has a reddish hue.
  • As implied by the lake's name, salt was another priceless prehistoric byproduct extensively utilised through the ages until very recently.
  • Numerous historians noted the excellent quality of the salt in this region and the significant export revenue it generated, dating back to the time before Christ.
  • Tekke Hala Sultan It is believed to be from the 18th century and was constructed on the tomb of Umm Haram, the Prophet Mohammed's foster mother.

  • When the Zenobia, a Swedish roll-on/roll-off ferry, sank in June 1980 in the fishing harbour of Larnaka, it was carrying 104 trailers and trucks and was on its first trip to Cyprus.
  • The Zenobia wreck is currently 1.5 kilometres off the shore and resting 42 metres deep on her port side.
  • The top of the wreck is 16 metres below sea level. On average, the water is visible for up to 50 metres, and the temperature varies from 16 degrees Celsius in the winter to 27 degrees Celsius in the summer.
  • Many fish species make the Zenobia their natural habitat, including Sea Bass, Dusky and Striped Groupers, Parrotfish, Amberjacks, Barracuda, a variety of Bream and Wrasse, and many others; it has now been designated as a protected artificial reef.
  • Since there is no other marine life like it near the wreck, it is currently considered one of the top 10 wreck diving locations in the world.
