The Best Places to Visit in Split
The Roman-Era Diocletian's Palace
- Diocletian's Palace (Dioklecijanova palaa) is a well-preserved UNESCO World Heritage Site built in the style of a Roman military camp, and a visit here is one of the best things to do in Split.
- Its basement also served as a filming location for Game of Thrones, making it a popular tourist attraction for fans of the show.
- Despite the fact that Emperor Diocletian only lived here for eight years before his death in AD 313, the palace continued to serve as an administrative center and the residence of the governor.
- The palace was used as a refuge for the residents of Salona when their city was sacked by the Germanic Avars three centuries later, in AD 615.
- The palace was originally 215 meters long, 180 meters wide, and enclosed by thick walls up to 28 meters high, with towers at each corner and four entrances, including the Golden Gate, Silver Gate, and Iron Gate.
- Two roads, one on each side of the gates, are laid out according to Roman tradition.
- The Temple of Jupiter, the Cathedral of St. Domnius, and medieval Brace Radica Square with its 15th-century Marina Tower are among the site's notable attractions.
- The 17th-century Milesi Palace and a statue of Marko Marulic, considered the founder of Croatian literature, are also worth seeing.
The Cathedral of St. Domnius
- Within the ancient area of Diocletian's Palace is the Cathedral of St. Domnius (Katedrala Sv. Duje). This stunning structure, which was originally Diocletian's mausoleum, was designed by Filotas and consecrated in the 7th century.
- Apart from the addition of a 60-meter-tall bell tower built in stages from the 12th to the 16th centuries, the cathedral has remained largely unchanged since then.
- The tower can be climbed and is well worth the effort due to its spectacular views of the palace.
- This magnificent Corinthian-designed cathedral has many notable interior features, including an octagonal layout and a double line of columns, some of which are Roman originals.
- The Altar of St. Domnius and the 13th-century hexagonal Romanesque stone pulpit are perhaps the most important.
Croatia's Greatest Artists at the Ivan Mestrovic Gallery
- While there are numerous fine examples of Ivan Mestrovic's work throughout the city, the best place to learn more about Croatia's most revered artist is at the Ivan Mestrovic Gallery.
- Mestrovic, a close friend of Rodin's, was widely regarded as one of the most important sculptors of the twentieth century, and he oversaw the gallery's design himself.
- The Ivan Mestrovic Gallery was founded in 1952 after a substantial donation of art from the artist himself.
- It was originally his residence during the 1930s. A collection of 86 marble, stone, bronze, wood, and gypsum statues, as well as numerous drawings, are among the highlights.
- The eight large bronze statues in the gallery's pleasant gardens are also worth seeing.

Old Town
- It's no surprise that the Old Town (Diocletian's Palace and the surrounding harbourside areas) is one of Split's most popular tourist destinations and one of the most popular places to stay when visiting.
- The area, which overlooks the harbor, is more than an architectural museum; it's also a fortified vibrant village with winding, cobblestone streets and alleyways.
- This laid-back, pedestrianized Gothic and Romanesque district of Split will entice you to spend hours exploring its friendly café/bars, coffee shops, and businesses.
- The Peristyle, the palace's heart, the palace's cellar, where a scene from Game of Thrones was filmed, the Cardo, a major thoroughfare through the grounds, the Split City Museum, and Saint Domnius Cathedral, as well as the Gold, Silver, Iron, and Bronze Gates, can all be found within the Diocletian's Palace grounds.
- A climb to the top of the cathedral bell tower will reward you with breathtaking views of the city and out to sea as far as the Dalmatian Islands.
- Ivan Metrovi is a well-known Croatian sculptor whose work can be found in the Metrovi Gallery and Katelet. Many of his sculptures can also be found in various parts of the city.
- Keep an eye out for Peoples Square as you make your way through the maze of old streets. It is located in the heart of Old Town.
- It's a great place to lose weight and people watch, thanks to its impressive clock and the numerous cafes, bars, and restaurants in the area.
Bacvice
- Bacvice is a popular district with those looking for relaxing sun-filled beach days and busy party atmosphere nights, and is only a few hundred meters from Split's main bus station or a gentle 20-minute stroll along the front from the old town area.
- It's also a district that gets extremely crowded during the summer, with locals and visitors alike flocking from all over the city to enjoy the beach and bars.
- Bacvice Beach, which is located near the port, is divided into two halves.
- The beach is part soft white sand – and part concrete – and it curves around the small bay, with a backdrop of pine and cypress trees.
- The beach is safe for the little ones, as it gently slopes into the warm Adriatic for over 100 meters.
- Sunbeds and sunshades are available, as well as a good selection of water sports equipment.
Veli Varos
- Veli Varos, a sleepy village west of Split old town that dates back to the 1600s, sprawls up from the bottom of the Marjan hill.
- Veli Varos was once the home of peasant fishermen and farmers who subsisted on the land or fished for sardines.
- With old horse-drawn carts parked alongside traditional stone buildings as if they've just returned from the fields, the area is a veritable step back in time.
- The medieval atmosphere of this charming village is enhanced by peasant dwellings, twisting, narrow streets and walkways, and numerous churches. Another significant advantage is that it is almost entirely pedestrianized.
- The village has a diverse selection of shops, businesses, bars, and restaurants for all of your day-to-day needs, as well as plenty of cultural attractions to fill the hours, making it popular with those who prefer a little daily respite from the constant crowds in city areas.
- Visit the 11th-century St Nicholas (Mikula) Church, which is located at the top of Cross Street in the village's center.

Split Culture and Traditions
- Croats as a people and as a country have a long history dating back to the medieval Kingdom of Croats. Croats were ruled by another political body for much of their history, but there were movements for national recognition and independence.
- The influence of neighboring countries can be seen in the architecture. In the north and central regions, Austrian and Hungarian influences can be seen in public spaces and buildings.
- These orderly towns and cities have large squares named after cultural icons, well-kept parks, and pedestrian-only zones.
- Above-ground trams are a great way to get around. Muted colors, particularly yellow and gold tones, predominate.
- A late lunch is the main meal of the day. The majority of foods in the north and inland have an Austrian or Hungarian flavor.
- Lunch usually consists of chicken or beef soup, cooked meat (usually pork), potatoes, and bread. In the spring and summer, greens with vinegar and oil are served, and pickled vegetables are served in the winter.
