The Best Places to Visit in Opatija
The origins of the town's name
- Opatija is the Croatian term for the abbey; thus, it should be no surprise that the town was named after an abbey.
- The charterhouse in question may no longer exist, but the church that served as its centrepiece is still standing more than half a millennium later.
- The Church of St. Jacob is a physical piece of history in these parts that should not be overlooked.
Stroll down the Walk of Fame
- It's time to go among the stars.
- Although it lacks the glitz and glam of its Hollywood counterpart, Opatija's Walk of Fame is no less noteworthy, with many notable Croatian names honoured.
- Some of the names honoured on this renowned boulevard are tennis great Goran Ivanievi, brilliant inventor Nikola Tesla, musician Rade Erbedija, and writer Tin Ujevi.
The 'Girl with the Seagull.'
- The Girl with a Seagull, undoubtedly Opatija's most famous statue, is one of the significant tragic emblems of the Kvarner Gulf.
- The tragedy began in 1891 when a local count named Arthur Kesselstadt was killed in a springtime storm.
- His family was distraught (understandably) and erected this memorial.
- Although the original is now housed at the Croatian Museum of Tourism, you may still take a photo with its beach replacement.

Explore the Museum of Croatian Tourism
- Opatija was formerly a resort for the upper crust of society, and the Villa Angiolina was right in the middle.
- It was built in 1844 and has entertained renowned guests such as Ban Josip Jelai and Emperor Franz-Jozef, but it now houses the Museum of Croatian Tourism and recollections of a glorious past.
- The museum is fascinating in and of itself, but its opulent surroundings draw the tourists.
The first hotel on the Adriatic Coast
- For a good reason, Opatija is renowned as the birthplace of Adriatic beach tourism.
- The Hotel Kvarner was the sole public accommodation of its kind on the coast when it was built in 1884, and it may rightfully claim to be the birthplace of one of the region's most profitable industries.
- The hotel was restored in 2014 and is as up-to-date as they come.
- There's a lot of luxury here, but it's represented in the prices.
