The Best Places to Visit in Montenegro
Kotor Old Town
- Kotor's Old Town is one of the Adriatic coast's best preserved fortified medieval towns, dominated by the 12-century Cathedral of Saint Tryphon.
- Kotor sits on the edge of the brilliant blue Bay of Kotor, surrounded by dramatic, soaring mountains, and has a distinct Venetian style (Venice was one of many city states and empires that ruled over this area throughout the centuries).
- The carved stone altar in the Cathedral of Saint Tryphon is a fine example of the type of stonemasonry that the city was known for during the Middle Ages.
- Spend some time wandering through Kotor's Old Town's maze of streets and alleyways, stopping for a meal at a traditional restaurant or a cold drink at a sidewalk café in one of the piazzas.
Budva Riviera
- The Budva Riveria is a popular summer beach destination for locals and tourists alike, stretching along the central Montenegrin coastline with Budva as its anchor city.
- The beaches here are a mix of sand and pebbles, backed on one side by the Adriatic Sea's clear, turquoise, and aquamarine-blue hues and dramatic mountains on the other.
- Along the Riviera, there are a number of excellent beaches, including Mogren Beach, which is the closest to Old Town Budva, being only a five-minute walk along a seaside pathway from the town.
- Restaurants with outdoor seating are also lined up along the Budva Riviera's beaches.
- The history of Old Town Budva dates back 2,500 years.
- This medieval walled city has a lively atmosphere and is home to a town museum, as well as restaurants and shops.
Lipa Cave

- The cave was first discovered by accident when a dog fell through a hole but managed to escape through another opening.
- For adventurous kids and adults alike, the karst cavern is one of Montenegro's most popular tourist attractions.
- A trip to the cave begins with a ride on a miniature train through the wild countryside, complete with pomegranate and wild fig trees.

Montenegro Off the Beaten Track
Kotor Old town
- Old Kotor is on the coast, but its high defensive walls make visitors feel like they're visiting a mountain village rather than a seaside village.
- With its small streets leading to charming squares, the old town has a unique atmosphere.
- Staying in Kotor is a great option for those who don't have access to a car and want everything close at hand.
- Many tours leave from Kotor, so you can take public transportation or join an organized tour with ease.
- There are numerous restaurants and bars in Kotor's old town, or a taxi ride along the bay for dinner is not difficult.
- During the day, you can board a "Hop-on Hop-off Sightseeing Bus" and travel around the bay, visiting the other villages.
- Every day, cruise ships disembark at the port of Kotor, causing the small old town to be stormed during the summer months; however, don't be alarmed; most of the time, after a quick tour, they disperse along the bay on a cruise-organized tour.
- In the summer, bars and restaurants play loud music until late; keep this in mind because it affects the majority of the old town's establishments.
The bay of Kotor
- Choosing to stay along the Bay will allow you to enjoy an enchanting place almost alone, especially during low season.
- Although the bay of Kotor lacks long stretches of sandy beach, almost all of the hotels in the bay provide access to the sea via small pebble beaches ripped from the sea or terraces from which you can dive right into the crystal clear water.
- If you are looking for a quiet and peaceful break, the villages along the bay are quite small, and there are many small accommodation options that contribute to making you feel much more isolated.
- If you don't have a car, you'll have to rely on public transportation (your host should be able to provide you with the most up-to-date schedule) or taxis.

Montenegro Must-Attend Festivals and Events
- The Mimosa Festival, which takes place in the beautiful port city of Herceg Novi each March, marks the beginning of spring (we know it's not summer, but we thought we'd include it anyway) after the dark days of winter.
- The festival, which is named after the yellow Mimosa flower, one of the first to bloom in the spring, attracts hundreds of locals and tourists each year.
- A team of volunteers picks over 10,000 mimosa flowers for the festival and arranges them in bouquets before distributing them throughout the city.
- A parade marches through the streets of the town during the festival, with musicians and dancers adding to the festivities, while vendors set up tents and hand out free fried fish, wine, and mimosa flowers.
- People gather in the town square after the parade to dance to live music while their children participate in a variety of fun, family-friendly activities.
- Finally, a giant papier-mache structure representing the year's ills is ceremonially burned in the town marina to signify new hope.
- Every June, a huge stadium in the Montenegrin capital of Podgorica hosts three days of pop, rock, and electronic music from the Balkans and around the world.
- City Groove has been a mainstay on the European festival circuit for many years, known for its superstar bookings and energetic crowd.
- And, unlike many other festivals of this size, it takes pride in being a green event that raises environmental awareness among attendees.
