Kumrovec Staro Selo Museum

  • Kumrovec, located close to the Slovenian border in the Sutla River valley, has been renovated into an open-air ethnographic museum.
  • The Staro Selo Museum is a re-creation of a 19th-century village, with 40 restored buildings and barns made of pressed earth and wood.
  • The hamlet was also the birthplace of former Yugoslav President Josip Broz Tito.
  • His home has been turned into a museum, complete with original furnishings, letters from foreign leaders, souvenirs, and a life-sized bronze sculpture outside.
  • The museum offers a vivid view of peasant traditions and village life, with a stream running through the idyllic location.
  • To evoke the region's traditional arts, crafts, and customs, these hie (typical Zagorje huts) are now filled with furniture, mannequins, toys, wine presses, and baker's tools (all accompanied by English captions).
  • From April to September, the museum provides demonstrations of blacksmithing, candlemaking, pottery making, and flax weaving on select weekends.

The Krapina Neanderthal

  • Those with children should make a beeline for this fantastic museum, which explores the history of the world, earth, and humanity while also spotlighting the tale of Krapina's famous 1899 Neanderthal fossil-bone find through various exciting, colourful, and high-tech exhibits.
  • Everything from the big bang to Neanderthal everyday life, their demise, and the rise of Homo sapiens is covered, and there are also informative displays on how the dig site was discovered.
  • Those with more than a passing interest in Neanderthals may be disappointed, as virtually little of the actual find (which included over 800 fossils) is on display.
  • Although it is one of the world's richest Neanderthal sites and has considerable scientific relevance, much of the find was bone pieces, making it not the most thrilling show for the public.
  • However, one area in the museum displays Neanderthal skulls from every significant site around the world.
