The Best Places to Visit in Sofia
Aleksander Nevski Cathedral
- This vast, awe-inspiring chapel, built between 1882 and 1912 in remembrance of the 200,000 Russian troops who died fighting for Bulgaria's independence during the Russo-Turkish War (1877–78), is one of Sofia's and Bulgaria's most recognisable landmarks.
- It has the name of a Russian warrior prince from the thirteenth century.
- The church, which was designed by Russian architect Alexander Pomerantsev and is embellished with mosaics and gold-laden domes, was erected in the neo-Byzantine style popular in Russia.
- The hollow, incense-scented chamber features naturalistic (but now faded) murals, pendulous chandeliers, and magnificent onyx and alabaster thrones.
- Visitors are welcome, and daily services featuring expressive Orthodox hymns and prayers are held.
Boyana Church
- The little 13th-century Boyana Church is a Unesco World Heritage Site, and its 90 murals are among Bulgaria's greatest specimens of mediaeval art.
- A combination ticket allows visitors to visit both the church and the National Museum of History, located 2 kilometres apart.
- Among the highlights are the oldest known portrait of St John of Rila and portraits of King Konstantin Asen and Queen Irina.
- There is little English signage, and visitors can only stay for 10 minutes.
Sveta Sofia Church
- Sveta Sofia is one of the oldest churches in the capital, and it is the church that gave the city its name.
- An ancient cemetery with 56 tombs and the ruins of four other churches is housed in an underground museum.
- Outside, there is a perpetual flame and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the burial of Ivan Vazov, Bulgaria's most revered writer.

Sofia Off the Beaten Track
Sveti Georgi Rotunda
- This little red-brick church, built in the 4th century AD, is Sofia's oldest preserved structure.
- The murals on the inside date from the 10th to 14th centuries.
- Visitors are welcome in this bustling, functional church.
- Enter through an entrance on ul Sâborna to find the church.
Museum of Socialist Art
- If you've ever wondered where all those undesired Lenin sculptures went, you'll find them here, along with the red star from Sofia's Party House.
- There's a painting exhibition with appealing titles like Youth Meeting at Kilifarevo Village to Send Worker-Peasant Delegation to the USSR and exciting old propaganda films.
- The museum is a little challenging to find. Take the metro to the Iztok suburb's GM Dimitrov station, then walk north along bul Tsankov and onto ul Lachezar Stanchev.
- The museum is located next to the Sopharma Business Towers in a gated Ministry of Culture facility. The large red star can be seen in the garden.

Banitsa or banichka

- Banitsa rules Bulgarian cuisine.
- It is made with puff pastry sheets with a cheese, egg, and yoghurt mixture (Banitsa recipe).
- There are some variations, such as pumpkin or spinach, but white cheese is the original Banitsa.
- Banichka is a minor form of Banitsa. Banichka is available in all of Sofia's local bakeries.

- Doctors' garden is located close behind the National Library and is considered one of the city's most innovative residential neighbourhoods; thus, the park is a lovely, private, and well-kept location to spend an hour or two.
- A large, pyramidal cairn-like monument stands in the centre of the Doctors' Garden, and it was created in memory of the medics who died during the Russo-Turkish War (1877-78).

Sofia Must-Attend Festivals and Events
- Every year, the Olé! Festival is a music festival dedicated to promoting Spanish and Latin American music.
- Antonio Serrano and Antonio Sanchez, Maria Toro and Quentin Gas, and Los Zingaros were the 2018 performers.
- Each of these acts took place over three days, taking place a week apart.
- It usually takes place in October each year. Although the 2019 schedule has not been posted, keep watching their website for updates, as this festival has increased in popularity and attracted larger audiences over the years.
- Documentaries about flamenco and other Latin music styles are also shown at the festival.
