A Sneak Peek into Plovdiv

destination - Seasons to travel
  • Plovdiv and its famous hills have been inhabited for more than 8,000 years, making it one of the world's oldest continuously inhabited cities.
  • The Ancient Thracians ruled for a few thousand years before the Romans took over and built a magnificent collection of monuments that are still being excavated in this Bulgarian city today.
  • The city's hillside Old Town is a kind of outdoor museum littered with ancient churches and mansions built by wealthy merchants from the city's past that open their doors to the public, while the Roman Theatre is one of the most complete you'll ever see.
  • All of this contributes to an enchanting setting where western and eastern cultures have coexisted for centuries.
  • Plovdiv, Bulgaria's second-largest city, is a wonderful place to visit.
  • This time is insufficient to explore all of Plovdiv's amazing attractions, but it is still preferable to not going at all.

  • International Airport: Plovdiv Airport (PDV)
  • Population: 347,000
  • Currency:  Bulgarian Lev
  • Time: UTC+2
  • Driving side: Right

Ancient theatre

  • This building, one of the world's most intact Ancient theatres, is still in use almost 2000 years after it was built.
  • The structure cuts into the side of Taksim Tepe, one of Plovdiv's six hills, and as you step down the slope towards the terraces, the views of the city and the Rhodope Mountains in the distance are breathtaking.
  • After a landslide on the hill, the theatre was only discovered again in the 1970s.
  • If you're in town during the summer, don't miss an opera or theatre performance in this romantic setting.
destination - Seasons to travel

Plovdiv Roman Stadium

  • This 2nd-century stadium could have held 30,000 spectators at one time, but today only fragments of the structure can be seen.
  • It lies beneath Plovdiv's Old Town and, like the city's Roman theatre, was only discovered in the twentieth century.
  • The best views are from Dzhumaya Square, where you can see down to a large section of the stadium's seating by looking over the railings.
  • You can navigate a vaulted passageway that runs underneath the northern curve if you walk down.
  • Visit the travellers center to learn more about the stadium's history.
destination - Seasons to travel

Plovdiv Old Town

  • Traditional homes blend with Plovdiv's roman ruins on the car-free cobblestone streets of old Plovdiv.
  • The majority of the houses in this area of town, especially on Ulitsa Saborna, are half-timbered, with some of the more opulent examples painted in vibrant colors.
  • Take, for example, the House of Stepan Hindliyan, which is blue with delicate sgrafitto designs around its window frames and dates from the mid-1800s.
  • You can see the lavish interior decorations of this lovely old house, as well as several others in Old Town.
  • Stepan Hindliyan's House murals took six months to paint by hand in just one room!

Kapana

  • Kapana, which literally translates to "The Trap," is one of Plovdiv's up-and-coming districts, located northeast of the Dzhumaya Mosque and just a few minutes from the city's main street.
  • Kapana has risen from obscurity in the City Centre to become one of Plovdiv's most notable districts in recent years.
  • Kapana has always been a creative person. It was founded 5 centuries ago as a center for artisans.
  • The city of Plovdiv has worked hard to transform this small neighborhood into a true center of art and a district dedicated to all things creative and contemporary; it is Plovdiv's hipster district par excellence, attracting a large number of young visitors.
  • More than 80% of Kapana's small streets are now pedestrian-friendly.
  • This district also has a lot of cafes, restaurants, bars, and clubs, making it one of Plovdiv's best areas.
destination - Seasons to travel

Old Town

  • Plovdiv's Old Town, also known as the Historic Centre, is an architectural and historical site that stretches across three hills in the city: Nebet Tepe, Dzhambaz Tepe, and Taksim Tepe.
  • Plovdiv's long history, which stretches from prehistory to the present day and combines the culture and architecture of antiquity, the Middle Ages, and the Bulgarian Renaissance, has resulted in this complex framework of narrow streets and slopes.
  • The Roman Theatre, one of the best-preserved ancient theatres in the world, is the most visible monument in the Old Town.
  • This magnificent structure was constructed during the reign of Roman Emperor Trajan and can hold between 5,000 and 7,000 spectators. It's still in use right now.
  • The walls of the Roman and Byzantine fortress, the remains of the forum and the aqueduct, the churches of Saint Constantine and Saint Helena, the Ethnographic Museum, the National Museum of the Renaissance, and various Renaissance houses are among the other attractions in the Historic Centre.
  • As expected, the Old Town is the best place to stay in Plovdiv for shopping, dining, and lodging, as it is home to the city's most important hotels.
  • For history buffs and those who want to be close to everything, this is an excellent place to stay in Plovdiv.
destination - Seasons to travel

Close to Plovdiv Central Railway Station

  • Plovdiv Central Railway Station is the city's main train station.
  • The station, which dates from the 1870s, is part of the Lyubimets-Belovo railway line, which also connects Sofia, Bulgaria's capital, with Istanbul, Turkey's largest city.
  • The station is located south of the Old Town, and while its surroundings are not as attractive as the medieval neighbourhoods of the Historic Centre, hotels in this area are significantly less expensive than those in the city center, making it an excellent choice for budget travellers.
  • Because the train station is adjacent to the long-distance bus station, it is served by the majority of the city's bus lines.
  • For those traveling through Bulgaria, the area surrounding the station is also a good place to stay in Plovdiv.

  • Plovdiv has been named the European Capital of Culture for the first time.
  • In 2019, the city will commemorate the most prestigious cultural initiative of the European Union, twenty years after it hosted the Month of Culture in 1999.
  • The European Capital of Culture is a one-of-a-kind project for Bulgaria, offering new opportunities for the city's development as well as new international visibility and a perspective on Bulgarian culture in general.
  • The Plovdiv European Capital of Culture 2019 program also includes activities and events in Bulgaria's South Central Region.
  • After four years of planning, the program is now a reality, with over 300 projects and nearly 500 events spanning not only the city but also the entire South Central Region, as well as the competition's finalists – Varna, Sofia, and Veliko Tarnovo.
  • Many traditional city events have gained new strength and expanded as a result of the initiative, new festivals have emerged, and an extraordinary amount of new experience with cultural content and management has emerged.

The Local’s Favourite Breakfast: Banitsa

#Food

  • You may have already heard of this legendary breakfast combination.
  • And it's no surprise: Bulgarians think of banichka and boza in the same way that millennials think of avocado toast.
  • Banitsa (or banichka) is a salty pastry made of several layers of thin dough sheets layered with traditional Bulgarian cheese and baked in the oven.
destination - Seasons to travel

The Notoriously Nutritious Drink: Boza

#Food

  • If you can muster the courage to try boza, it will undoubtedly be one of your first Bulgarian experiences: a slightly fermented wheat drink with a slightly funky odor.
  • It's a dark beige color with a slightly sweet flavor and traces of alcohol.
  • Boza makes up for its lack of appeal with its properties: it is notoriously nutritious and rumored to have magical breast-growing properties (when consumed by women).
  • If boza is too strong for your taste, airyan, a salty yoghurt-based drink, can be substituted.
  • Traditional Bulgarian yoghurt is a must-try. It's delicious and healthy if you add some berries and honey to it.

The Meat Lover’s Choice: Meshana Skara (a mixture of grilled meat)

#Food

  • The popular main course, Meshena Skara, is the next step. This is not a meal for the faint of heart.
  • It's a mash-up of (almost) every delicious grilled delicacy Bulgaria has to offer.
  • Though the combinations vary slightly between restaurants, kyufteta (meatballs), kebapcheta (minced meat fingers), various types of sausages, steak, and poultry or pork skewers are usually included.
  • This meal pairs well with lyutenitsa, a slightly spicy and indescribably delicious dipping sauce/spread made from red peppers, tomatoes, aubergines, and carrots, and seasoned with special local herbs and spices.
  • Visit Rahat Tepe Restaurant in the Old Town for a delicious and filling meat meal!

  • The mall has its own restaurants, which serve both local and international cuisine.
  • Apart from the big brands, you'll find all the local brands here, as well as articles you've never seen before.
  • Clothing, fashionable shoes, a variety of accessories, souvenirs for loved ones, and any other item you can think of are all available from Bulgarian and foreign manufacturers.

  • A hypermarket, pharmacies, commercial banks, and travel agencies are among the shops for cosmetics, accessories, and clothing.
  • There are also offices and a number of restaurants in the area. Clothes of Bulgarian and foreign origin can be found here.
  • You also have the assurance that the items you are purchasing are genuine. The atmosphere is very pleasant here.
