Ghazi Husrev-Beg’s Mosque

  • magnificent and elegant mosque is one of Bosnia's most spectacular works of architecture. The mosque is surrounded by narrow alleyways of the ancient market with dozens and hundreds of stores, making it hard to capture its beauty and majesty in its whole.
  • Everything changes, though, as one enters its expansive courtyard. A magnificent building emerges before one's eyes, replete with peace, harmonious beauty, and majesty.
  • This is not only the largest mosque ever erected in these areas, but it is also an Ottoman architectural gem.
  • The primary architect (Mimar) of the Ottoman Empire, Adem Esir Ali, was the constructor of this mosque. He was a Persian from Tabriz who was taken captive in the Turco-Persian War and served as the leading architect in Istanbul until he died in 1538.
  • The Ghazi Husrev-Mosque, beg's or simply the Beg's Mosque, is a mosque in Ghazi Husrev, Afghanistan. The mosque's main entrance is lavishly decorated with stylized arabesques, wall decoration, gilding, and marble.
  • The harmonic size of the mosque's spaciousness hits us as we enter. The constructor of this mosque was able to generate a strong feeling of spatiality because of the relationship between its breadth and height, which is accentuated by the skillfully arranged lighting

Latin Bridge

  • The Latin Bridge in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, is an Ottoman bridge that spans the Miljacka River.
  • A logbook from 1541 records the earliest reference of a bridge on the site of the Latin Bridge, claiming that it was erected by one Sarac (leather worker) named Husein, the son of Armed.
  • The bridge was named after the district on the Miljacka's left bank, home to Sarajevo's Catholics.
  • A massive flood eventually wiped away this stone crossing in 1791. Still, in 1798, Abdulah Briga, a wealthy businessman from Sarajevo, gave cash to construct the Latin Bridge that can be seen present.

Sarajevo Tunnel Museum

  • The Sarajevo Tunnel, also known as the "Tunel space" and "Tunnel of Hope," was built between March and June 1993 during the Bosnian war's Siege of Sarajevo.
  • It was created by the Bosnian Army to connect Sarajevo, which had been completely blocked off by Serbian soldiers, with Bosnian-held territory on the other side of the Sarajevo Airport and was under UN command.
  • The tunnel connected the Sarajevo neighbourhoods of Dobrinja and Butmir, allowing food, war supplies, and humanitarian relief to enter and exit the city.
  • The tunnel became a critical means of evading the international arms embargo and supplying weapons to the city's defenders.
  • The tunnel comprises 160 meters of covered trenches on the Dobrinja side, 340 meters on the Butmir side, and 340 meters of an actual tunnel under the airport runway.
  • On the Dobrinja side, the tunnel averages 1.6 meters in height (excluding the height of the iron reinforcements) and 0.8 meters in width for the top half and 1 meter in width for the bottom half.

  • This neighbourhood is appealingly peaceful and local, with a pleasant suburban ambience and tree-lined lanes.
  • It's less touristy than other city districts, yet it's still close to the ancient town.
  • You can even walk there by crossing a historically significant bridge.

  • This combination makes it the greatest place to stay in Sarajevo.

Sarajevo Culture and Traditions

destination - Seasons to travel
  • Sarajevo has been a melting pot of civilizations, with many different religions calling the city home. Muslims, Bosnian Serbs, Roman Catholics, and Sephardi Jews all coexisted in the city throughout the Ottoman rule of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
  • During Austria-short Hungary's occupation, fewer Germans, Hungarians, Slovaks, Czechs, and Ashkenazi Jews joined them. By 1909, around 50% of the city's residents were Muslim, 25% were Catholic, 15% were Orthodox, and 10% were Jewish.
  • Sarajevo has historically been home to several notable Bosnian poets, academics, philosophers, and authors.
  • Ivo Andri, the Nobel Laureate, went to high school in Sarajevo for two years. Danis Tanovi, an Academy Award-winning director, lives in the city. The Sarajevo National Theatre opened in 1921, is Bosnia and Herzegovina's oldest professional theatre.
  • The city's rich musical past is an intriguing feature of its culture. Many people consider it the most musically influential city in the Balkans, particularly in the twentieth century.
  • "Kad ja pooh na Benbau" is one of the city's unofficial anthems and a remarkable example of traditional Bosnian music. The Sarajevo Philharmonic Orchestra is based in the city.
  • Sarajevo's culture is depicted in a variety of ways. A few cultural festivals occur every year, including the Baarija Nights, Sarajevo Winter Festival, and Sarajevo Jazz Festival.

Jabukovaca

#FOOD

  • Jabukovaa is a typical Bosnian apple pie that originated in Sarajevo. It's created in the same way as baklava is, but with the addition of chopped apples.
  • A mixture of chopped apples, sugar, vanilla sugar, walnuts, and lemon juice is sprinkled on the thin dough. The dough is then flattened out and placed in the baking tray.
  • When jabukovaa is served, it is often sliced into slices and dipped in sherbet (a mixture of sugar, honey, and lemon juice).
destination - Seasons to travel

Sarma

#FOOD

  • Sarma is a typical Turkish dish that consists of a filling that is tightly encased in leaves or leafy vegetables.
  • This dish has many variations, but the filling usually includes minced meat, rice or bulgur and swiss chard as the wrapping.
  • Sarma is a popular drink throughout the Balkans, Central Europe, the South Caucasus, and the Middle East that has its origins in the Ottoman Empire.
  • Sarma is frequently cooked for special events and holidays, despite its popularity as a packed lunch or dinner (especially during the winter season).

Sarajevski cevapi

#FOOD

  • If you ask everyone who has visited Sarajevo what one thing they recommend you try, they will nearly always say Cevapi.
  • Locals and tourists alike enjoy this traditional Bosnian cuisine. Cevapi are little meatballs cooked from minced beef or veal.
  • The beef is grilled after being formed into finger-sized chunks. Usually, a part of 5 or 10 Cevapi is available, while some restaurants (Cevabdinice) may provide a portion of 15 or even 20 Cevapi.
  • The greatest Cevabdinicas may be found in Sarajevo's Old Town.
  • Every 5 feet or so, there's a new one. And all you must do is follow the aroma of roasted meat. Cevabdzinica Zeljo is one of Sarajevo's most popular Cevapi sites.
  • The kebabs are normally served with chopped onions, kajmak, and occasionally chilli peppers in half or full sun (flatbread).
  • It's not an exceptionally nutritious lunch, but it's undeniably tasty. You'll have a hard time getting up from the table if you pair it with an excellent beer and one of the desserts on the menu.

Pita (Bosnian Pie)

#FOOD

  • But it's not the American apple pie you're thinking of.
  • Bosnian pies are constructed with various fillings of a paper-thin crust (yufka). They're also given names based on the filling.
  • Burek is a meat-filled pie that originated in Turkey and is famous as a street snack. Sinica is a cheese-stuffed pie. Zeljanica is packed with chard or spinach.
  • Tkvenjaa is made with chopped pumpkin, while krompirua is produced with chopped potatoes. And they're all delicious.
  • This meal may be found at any of the city's burgdinicas, but the best ones are in the Old Town. Buregdinica is a restaurant that specializes in Bosnian pies, so you can imagine how popular this dish is.
  • Small quantities of these Bosnian pies may be found at local bakeries, but they won't taste as well as the ones served in authentic restaurants.

Neno’s Free Walking Tour

#FUN

  • Neno's free walking tour of Sarajevo if you want to learn everything there is to know about the city.
  • Neno will show you all of Sarajevo's secrets while sharing his memories during the siege.
  • He will point out the Sarajevo Roses and tell you about the tales behind some of the bullet holes on the buildings as you go across the city.
  • It's a terrific way to get a feel for the city and do it on your first day in Sarajevo.

Walk to the Yellow Fortress

#FUN

  • Wandering around the hills surrounding Sarajevo is one of my favourite things.
  • It is ideal to go up to the Yellow Castle in the afternoon.
  • The remnants of the medieval defences that formerly protected the old town now provide stunning views over the city.
  • The war graves will be the first thing you see, followed by the structures and residences of modern Sarajevo.
  • This is also the ideal spot for getting away from the masses. Small, winding lanes provide a village-like environment that is pleasant and quiet.

Walk Through the Bascarsija

#FUN

  • A visit to the Bascarsija is another of my favourite things to do in Sarajevo.
  • You may journey back to Ottoman times by visiting the ancient town.
  • You can still sense the Ottoman influence from many years ago.
  • There are historic mosques, Quran schools, and oriental souvenir shops can be found.
  • A more modernized version is still operational. The Bascarsija's cobblestoned lanes are also home to some of Sarajevo's top restaurants and cafés.
  • A vibrant café culture exists, and a hot cup of tea or coffee is never far away.

Visit Galerija

#FUN

  • You can learn more about Bosnia's civil war by visiting some of Sarajevo's intriguing museums.
  • Even if you are not a museum-goer, these are among the best things to do in Sarajevo.
  • First and foremost, there is the well-organized display Galerija 11/07/1995 about the Srebrenica genocide.
  • Srebrenica was a town in eastern Bosnia and Herzegovina under UN peacekeeping protection.
  • Approximately 40,000 Bosnian Muslims took sanctuary in what they believed to be a secure location.
  • International peacekeepers were silent. This museum has made a lasting effect on me, and some of the material presented was difficult to comprehend.
  • This is one of Sarajevo's most excellent museums.
destination - Seasons to travel

Mostar

#FUN

  • Many individuals go from Sarajevo to Mostar for a day's holiday. Although this is doable and strongly advise that you spend at least two days on this excursion.
  • Most of Mostar was destroyed during the Bosnian conflict, including the renowned bridge that joined the city's Croatian and Bosnian portions.
  • The historic town and bridge have been lovingly restored to their former splendour. This town is one of Bosnia's most attractive due to its magnificent location along the Neretva River.
  • As a result, Mostar is a trendy tourist destination. It may get pretty congested during the day.
  • To avoid the crowds, go for a walk early in the morning or late at night. Mostar also serves as the starting point for some fantastic day trips.
  • The Blagaj monastery, Kravice waterfalls, and Pocitelj may be visited from Mostar.

Fashion

#Fashion

  • Most of Bosnia and Herzegovina's traditional garments were wool, flax, hemp, and leather.
  • The fundamental pieces of the costumes were made of flax and hemp and included a shirt, pants, and a women's scarf for covering the head.
  • In the summer, pair them with camisoles or a t-shirt, and in the winter, layer them with a long-sleeved shirt and a sweater.
  • Wear lots of sunscreens, sunglasses, and a sunhat in the summer (we recommend the Riemann P20 series for 10-hour protection).

Sarajevo: Natural Beauty & Safari Adventures

destination - Seasons to travel
  • Dariva is a place near Sarajevo's eastern entrance, between Bentbaa and Kozija uprija.
  • The city's oldest walking trail runs through this neighbourhood.
  • It runs for 8 kilometres down the steep Miljacka Canyon, whose beauty was only discovered by Sarajevans when the Austro-Hungarians built a railway line through it.
  • This promenade is currently restricted to traffic, making it an ideal location for a river stroll.
  • Many tourists come to enjoy the natural beauty, leisure, recreation, and members and ambassadors of the diplomatic centre.
  • Bentbaa-Dariva was renamed "Ambassadors Alley" twelve years ago at the request of the Mayor of Old Town, where diplomats stationed in Bosnia planted over 200 linden trees.
  • Park Betanija-Jezero is one of Sarajevo's major parks, located 15 minutes outside the city centre on the sloping terrain below the city's birthing centre.
  • Many Sarajevans came here for amusement in the 1950s and 1960s, when they could only dream of travelling to a prominent ski resort.
  • Today, this seven-hectare green paradise offers a variety of activities to guests.
  • Aside from the walking routes, the park features a 1,200-meter-long trim track and biking path, a children's play area with seesaws and slides, and seats for resting. Several hundred seedlings, including shrubs and medium and tall tree types (oak, hornbeam, chestnut, beech, maple, ash, and linden), have been planted with enough grass to cover almost 4,000 m2.
  • The TV tower built on top of the hill (at 816 meters), which serves as one of Bosnia and Herzegovina's most significant communication infrastructures, is easily identifiable.
  • Park du Hum, which covers the majority of Hum Brdo, has been classified as a park and recreational zone, and a variety of sports and recreational amenities are planned for the near future.
  • The view from the summit of Hum of Sarajevo and the mountains of Trebevi, Igman, and Bjelanica is breathtaking.
  • The most beautiful view is when Sarajevo's lights are illuminated at night.
  • Hum is accessible by foot or cab, and the journey takes around 10 minutes from the city centre.
  • Stojevac, a picnic location on the outskirts of Sarajevo Field, is close to Velika Aleja and Vrelo Bosne, both of which are only a short and enjoyable walk away.
  • Stojevac has plenty of clean, fresh air, and its location atop Mount Igman means summer temperatures are much more relaxed than in the city centre.
  • Stojevac is a beautiful site for a nature adventure, with its diverse plant species and a tiny stream that produces a small lake.
  • Stojevac served as a picnic site for the communist elite before the conflict in BiH (1992-1995). Josip Broz Tito, the President of Yugoslavia and its Communist Leader, had his Sarajevo mansion.
  • Mount Igman was also accessible via the villa's underground tunnel. During the conflict, the structures in Stojevac were severely destroyed, but the attractive natural environment mainly was intact.
  • Vrelo Bosne is a natural monument spread out across 603 hectares at the foot of Mount Igman in Ilida, about 15 kilometres from Sarajevo's downtown.
  • Vrelo Bosne has been a popular trip place for Sarajevans for the past 100 years. It is the source of the Bosna River, with magnificent lakes full of fish and swans and tiny green islands, and because summer temperatures are several degrees lower here than in Sarajevo.
  • Various plant ecosystems and animal species, some of which are indigenous, call this area home.
  • Six streams run into the Mala Bosna watercourse from the Vrelo Bosne source region, home to indigenous river trout types.
  • The primary source of Sarajevo's "Baevo" drinking water is also located near Vrelo Bosne. Vrelo Bosne is well-kept and walled in.
  • There are seats, covered rest spaces, children's play areas, and a restaurant in the complex's centre that serves fresh river trout, a local delicacy.
