A Sneak Peek into Nuwara Eliya

destination - Seasons to travel
  • This aristocratic highland enclave, known as 'Little England,' has a rose-tinted, vaguely British-country-village feeling, with colonial-era bungalows, Tudor-style hotels, well-kept hedgerows, and attractive gardens.
  • Indeed, Nuwara Eliya was formerly the preferred cool-climate retreat for Sri Lanka's tea industry's hard-working and hard-drinking English and Scottish pioneers.
  • Although a recent construction boom has spoiled the scene, and the dusty and congested city centre is a typical Sri Lankan urban tangle, Nuwara Eliya is still a great place to unwind for a few days.
  • Tea estates meticulously kept vegetable plots, and rugged hills dot the surrounding area, which is lush and beautiful.
  • Spend a stay in one of Nuwara Eliya's colonial hotels, play a round of golf or a few frames of billiards, and take in the town's distinctive past.
  • Around Nuwara Eliya, you'll find mock-Tudor buildings, hills draped in rich green tea plantations, and Horton Plains National Park.
  • Around Nuwara Eliya, you'll find mock-Tudor buildings, hills draped in rich green tea plantations, and Horton Plains National Park.
  • Nuwara Eliya is a green community with a British accent in the heart of Sri Lanka's tea heartland.
  • Tea bushes are beautifully groomed on almost every slope.
  • The mock-Tudor buildings and velvety golf courses harken back to when this was the British's favourite getaway after defeating the Kandyan Kingdom and gaining control of Sri Lanka.
  • The location is less than three hours north of Kandy, and while many people like to travel by rail, we can also arrange for you to travel by automobile, which will allow you to take side trips with time to pause and take in the scenery at your leisure.

  • February through April is the most satisfactory time to visit Nuwara Eliya.
  • Given that it is a hill station, the weather in Nuwara Eliya is mild all year.
  • Monsoons are also a fantastic time to visit if guests don't mind a little rain.
  • The rest of the year has a typical climate, with the most significant temperature around 31 degrees Celsius.
  • Even though the Sri Lankan and Tamil new years fall in April, it is still the most fantastic time to visit due to the vivid festivities that take place during this time.
  • Dance and music shows are held at various hotels at night, a flower exhibit at the end of the month and golf tournaments.

The Best Places to Visit in Nuwara Eliya

destination - Seasons to travel

Tea plantation

  • You'll find brightly clothed labourers, primarily women of Tamil heritage, working among the manicured rows as you drive through a tea estate's curving pathways.
  • The tea factory, located in the centre of the lush fields, provides an insight into the intricate phases of the tea-making process.
  • You might watch different sections of the process depending on the day, which begins with plucking only the lightest-green leaves from the tops of the branches and goes through many steps such as drying, oxidising, curing, and sorting.
  • Tea connoisseurs can even stay at an old tea factory.
destination - Seasons to travel

Heritance Tea Factory

  • Set in sweeping green hills high above sea level, this is Sri Lanka's first tea mill to be transformed into a hotel, and its restoration earned it a UNESCO Merit Award.
  • Many of the building's original characteristics have been preserved, and the exterior has not been altered.
  • Features like brass-capped wooden fans in the guestrooms scales initially used to weigh tea, and the old engine room, which is still turned on each day for guests to view, almost feels like a museum inside.
  • On arrival, you'll be greeted with a cup of hot spice tea, and in your accommodation, you'll find tea from the plantation and panoramic views of the plantation and surrounding valley.
destination - Seasons to travel

Horton Plains National Park

  • Horton Plains National Park is an undulating plateau of montane grassland, hazy lakes, and dense cloud forest located an hour south of Nuwara Eliya.
  • Unique bird species in the park include the dull-blue flycatcher, Sri Lanka white-eye, and Sri Lanka wood pigeon.
  • It's also a herpetological haven with up to 15 different lizard species.
  • Arrange for a private guide to accompany you to the park early in the morning, when the birds are most active.
  • Ascend through the wooded countryside via winding pathways, and if you're lucky, you might catch sight of Adam's Peak in the distance — the tall conical peak has a footprint-shaped feature near the summit, which is said to have been left by the Buddha, and the mountain is sacred.
destination - Seasons to travel

Gregory Lake

  • Gregory Lake is located in the middle of Nuwara Eliya. It's a big open body of water that can be seen from anywhere in Nuwara Eliya.
  • After that, many visitors to the area will go jet skiing on Gregory Lake.
  • Alternatively, hire a swan for an hour if you want something more relaxed and romantic.
  • You may also park and stroll around entire areas of the lake, which we did while we were there.
  • If you want to see Gregory Lake from your hotel room, stay at one of these hotels in Nuwara Eliya.
destination - Seasons to travel

Victoria Park

  • The centre of Nuwara Eliya can appear to be a little crowded, and there's certainly a lot of noise with all the vehicles.
  • On the other hand, Victoria Park is a refuge away from the surrounding noise and bustle.
  • The entrance charge to Victoria Park is merely 300 Rupees, and you can spend as much time strolling through the gardens or reclining on a park bench as you choose.
  • There's also the Victoria Park Museum to visit.
  • It's modest, but it contains an extensive collection of antique Nuwara Eliya years from the last century. They depict life in the area during the period when it was ruled by the British.
  • It's fascinating to see how the landscape has changed and constructed the rails through time.
destination - Seasons to travel

Leap Waterfall

  • The Lover's Leap waterfall in Nuwara Eliya is a must-see for everyone visiting the area.
  • Only a short drive from town and is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the country.
  • It also has an intriguing past, at least if local legend is believed.
  • According to legend, a local prince once had feelings for a girl, but they were prohibited from being together.
  • The story concludes with them hand in hand, jumping to their deaths from a waterfall.
  • I'm not sure if this is accurate or if there have been any further incidents. In any case, it's a pleasant place to visit.
destination - Seasons to travel

Devon Falls

  • Two gorgeous falls are around a 20 to 30-minute drive from Nuwara Eliya, and it would be a shame to miss them.
  • They're both near, but Devon Falls is a little more away, and there are a few spots where you can admire them.
  • However, I encourage you to go to the Mlesna Tea Castle.
  • Yes, you read that correctly: someone designed a tea room in the shape of a castle!
  • You can relax upstairs on the balcony and have a warm cup of tea while looking out over the farm. If you prefer, a chilled cup of iced tea will suffice. Also, don't forget about the cake.
destination - Seasons to travel

St Clair's Falls

  • Mostly recommend taking in the splendour of St Clair's Falls from Yoho's Waterfall Villas.
  • This resort features a fantastic restaurant in a fantastic location on the slopes.
  • They have enormous glass windows that stretch the length of the restaurant, allowing you to sit and enjoy your meal while taking in the scenery. The meal is also really inexpensive!
  • The drive to these waterfalls takes you via winding mountain roads with breathtaking views of the surrounding tea plantations.
  • For this reason alone, Devon Falls and St Clair's Falls are worth seeing.
destination - Seasons to travel

The Seetha Amman Temple

  • The Seetha Amman temple is one of the more unusual sites in Nuwara Eliya.
  • It's a unique location because it's Sri Lanka's only Sita temple.
  • It's also a revered location. It's also a well-known spot if you want to learn more about the area's history where the temple is located.
  • On your way out of Nuwara Eliya and towards Ella, you'll most certainly pass through the Seetha Amman temple.
  • So there are no excuses for not stopping by!
destination - Seasons to travel

The Hakgala Botanical Gardens

  • The Hakgala Botanical Gardens are around 1km from the Seetha Amman shrine.
  • This is Sri Lanka's second-largest botanical garden and one of only four in the country.
  • Because of the comparably low yearly temperature in this country, the garden's managers have grown some extremely uncommon plant species.
  • Many of these are hard to come by elsewhere in the country.
  • It is undoubtedly one of the most popular things to do in Nuwara Eliya, with 100,000 visitors per year.
  • All to witness more than 10,000 different types of plants.

  • For years, dumped waste from Nuwara Eliya was here before being cleared in 2010.
  • The region now draws tens of thousands of people each year.
  • Many people opt to walk, bike, or drive through the park.

  • It provides panoramic views of the area, provided that it is not misty!

  • Everything from wild elk to leopards can be found in the area. The latter is much more uncommon.

Horton Plains National Park

  • Horton's Plains is one of Nuwara Eliya's most well-known tourist attractions.
  • Although this large open park is around 30 kilometres from Nuwara Eliya, it is nevertheless one of the most popular tourist destinations because it is the closest major city.
  • There isn't a clear path to follow when you first enter the park.
  • Instead, there are three main rivers in the area and various peaks to walk up.
  • The most well-known is World's End.
  • It's also a popular destination for nature lovers, as you can see and photograph various local wildlife.
  • If you're looking for route ideas, here is a great place to start.

  • Our massive waterfall is undoubtedly Nuwara Eliya's most spectacular, and if you only have time to see one waterfall on this list, make it Bomburu Ella Waterfall.
  • From Nuwara Eliya, you may quickly obtain a taxi to the falls; everyone knows where to go.
  • The ideal time to see this waterfall is early in the morning or late in the afternoon when there are fewer people.
  • You'll be able to appreciate the waterfall quite this way!

Strawberry Farm

  • Nuwara Eliya is known as Sri Lanka's strawberry capital!
  • There are many strawberry farms on the outskirts of Nuwara Eliya that you can visit.
  • You may pick fresh strawberries, tour the farms, or have a strawberry milkshake or dessert at these farms.
  • Ramya or Jagro Simply Strawberries are the two leading farms open to visitors.
  • For 100 LKR per person, Ramya offers a farm visit (you just get to walk through the strawberry greenhouse).
  • Both locations had a café with a range of refreshments, such as strawberry juices and milkshakes.
  • Jagro, on the other hand, had an extensive dessert menu, and the brownie with ice cream and strawberries was to die for!
  • As a result, if you only go to one, make it Jargo.
  • These farms are just a 20-minute drive from town on the road to Horton Plains National Park.
  • You can drive yourself (renting a scooter or tuk-tuk), hire a driver, or take a guided tour!
  • Otherwise, a few strawberry establishments in town will create fresh strawberry drinks or pastries.
destination - Seasons to travel

Hakgala Botanic Gardens

  • Hakgala Botanical Gardens, the second-largest of only five botanic gardens in Sri Lanka, is a significant tourist attraction in Nuwara Eliya.
  • Over 10,000 different varieties of flora are on display in the gardens, which can walk through in a mix of manicured gardens and forests.
  • The cost of visiting Hakgala Botanical Gardens is one of its drawbacks.
  • Foreigners must pay a high entrance fee of 1,500 LKR (rather a lot for a garden, don't you think?). However, if you're travelling in the spring and want to take some nice flower shots, this might be worth it!
  • Take your time; you could easily spend an hour or more here! About 10 minutes outside of Nuwara Eliya is the Hakgala Botanic Garden.
  • Google Maps can help you find the location.
destination - Seasons to travel

  • Many people are unaware that Adam's Peak is accessible from Nuwara Eliya.
  • It's a three-hour journey, but you can sleep the entire way on a comfortable bus.
  • The finest tours leave about midnight to ensure that you arrive in time for sunrise.
  • It's critical to go hiking early in the morning to get the best views.
  • Depending on how many people you can convince to travel with you, expect to pay between 2,000 and 7,000 LKR for transportation to Adam's Peak and Nuwara Eliya.
  • One word of caution: Adam's Peak is a popular tourist destination and a local hangout.
  • So, if you want to escape the busiest times of the week, I recommend going during the week (not on the weekends or holidays
destination - Seasons to travel

The top of Single Tree Hill

  • Single Tree Peak is a small hill with a great perspective in Nuwara Eliya that may be reached by walking (or driving).
  • Mostly takes about 90 minutes to get to the top, and you'll be rewarded with panoramic views of the town, lake, mountains, and nearby tea gardens.
  • This activity is best done first in the morning to ensure you receive the best views.
  • Around 10 a.m., the mist in Nuwara Eliya begins to settle, and it can completely obstruct your view! you can find Single Tree Hill on Google Maps.
  • It is conveniently located in the city and is easy to locate! This day tour to Nuwara Eliya includes a stop at the Single Tree viewpoint and many other stops!
destination - Seasons to travel

Ambewela Farm or New Zealand Farm

  • Ambewela Farm and New Zealand Farm are two famous farms near Nuwara Eliya.
  • Both farms are active dairy farms that welcome visitors to come and look around.
  • Visiting either farm will allow you to sample fresh milk or yoghurt, observe the animals, and simply relax in a beautiful setting.
  • New Zealand Farm does provide a guided "farm tour" (which is more of a guided walk around to see some cows) for 100 LKR per person, which is worth trying if you're in the area.
  • Ambewela's drinking yoghurt is fantastic, and I suggest it.
  • Because the farms are identical, you only need to visit one of them.
